I am experiencing a problem, no mods work, I get an error message every time I attempt to launch one, i never had this problem on my old XP based computer, now with my brand new Vista based one I am running into this problem. I am a fan of mods and modding, so I would greatly appreciate a solution for this frankly infuriating problem.

Vista requires constqant security alerts to feel important. If it cant tell you of all of its percieved threats, it will become Emo and crash its operations.

So a solution would be? That wasn't meant to be offensive in any way, but I really just want this fixed.

Which mods?

I tried two mods one titled - StarCraft: 50 Years Later
by ant1991331 (http://www.starcraft.org/users/ant1991331) and Infested Terran
by Toxin22 (http://www.starcraft.org/users/Toxin22), everytime I try to launch one I get a message saying-

"Starcraft has stopped working a problem has caused starcraft to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you is a solution becomes available."

Starcraft was never meant to work on Vista.

So I basically have to buy windows XP or it won't work?

Starcraft itself works fine in Vista if you have the folder somewhere that you have write access to.

As for those specific mods, I haven't tried them myself, but all mods that I have tried on Vista work fine.

vista might have more anti-patching routines in place, which conflict with the idea of mods.

I haven't tried MemGraft (do those mods mentioned use it?), but I do know that MPQDraft, SCMLoader, and FireGraft work with no issues, and if the user has write access to the Starcraft folder then even as a standard user (not administrative user).

I'm not entirely sure what they use, however I have tried a light conversion based mod, and that fails to work as well.

I think the question is "do you have write access to the starcraft folder? You can tell if you do or not by going to the folder above your starcraft directory. (eg: if your SC directory was "C:\program files\starcraft\" the folder above would be "C:\program files\") Right click on your starcraft folder and select "properties". Go to the "security" tab and you should see a list of names. Your user account should be in there somewhere. Select it and, in the box below, check to see if the "write" checkbox is on. If not then that's more than likely your problem.

Vista requires constqant security alerts to feel important. If it cant tell you of all of its percieved threats, it will become Emo and crash its operations.

That has to be the best post I've ever read from you.

I've done that and see a box labelled "permissions for SYSTEM" everything there including "Write" is checked so as to allow, except for the exception of of "Special Permissions" It is neither set to Allow or Deny. so I am guessing that isn't the problem, man vista is really starting to piss me off, if it wasn't for games like "Crysis" I would unistall and burn it...

Look for your own user name there or something like "Users"
If "SYSTEM" is the only one with access, you won't be able to access the file at all.

Everything except for "Special Permissions" is set to "allow" under every user name, including mine.

So do any mods work at all?

Oldmano

None of the ones I've tried, which is like 5 or 6, so I'm guessing...no.

If those mods were made for earlier versions of SC-BW they won't work since the patches have many times before 'killed' them (and/or the tools that were used). :P
Alas, you must be sure of what version of the game they were made to work with. From my scarce modding knowledge only MPQDraft mods (or updated with it) usually work with every game version. ;)

Yeah, same thing happened to me, but it was plenty of mods, including mine, which was made with MPQDraft. But ive been told people are looking for a solution to this. Im kind of happy i didnt come across a straight forward OMG VISTA, CHANGE TO XP, type post O_o. I guess we Vista users have got to wait. What bothers me is how ShadowFlare got it to work O_o. Maybe its a Vista version issue.
Or maybe, somehow, its a plain hardware issue. I REALLY dont see that happening though. I'm really confused now :(.

Oh, mentioning hardware issues reminded me of something... Those of you who cannot get the mods working on Vista, what CPU is in the computer?

If it is a CPU with 64-bit support, then you may be encountering an issue with the more widely distributed version of MPQDraft.

"Starcraft has stopped working a problem has caused starcraft to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you is a solution becomes available."

Limezor from our forums had the same issue.
Here was fix:
trouble w/ mods constructed prior to Windows Vista (http://www.broodwarai.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=66&view=findpost&p=1050)

you need to update the MPQDraft to Shadowflare's Vista version.

I did not make that version, I only helped Quantam test it, since he did not have one of those processors at the time.

Oh no, I have a problem, I just got my computer back from repars ( to fix my Optical drive) and now I get this error when I try to run a mod- "MPQ draft has encountered a fatal error: The patch MPQ's could not be loaded. The game will now close."

A little help? Maybe? I feel sad and neglected...

That happens with me as well on my Vista computer. I think it means that the patch of the mpq is lower than the patch starcraft is running at.

Im almost always running lower than the patch but dont get that error O_o

My friend just bought a laptop with vista on it and when I tried to put my mod on his comp it wouldn't work. I just used winMPQ to repatch it. Vista uses a little bit different path to get to the starcraft folder. I don't know if that will help any of ya'll out, but it worked perfectly for my mods.
