I downloaded xChat and tried to connect to irc.devcore.co.uk
but it says "Unknown host. Maybe you misspelled it?"
I don't know if this means anything, but when I type /server irc.devcore.co.uk it gives me the message back in a split second. But when I type /server irc.devcore.com it takes maybe two and a half seconds, but I get the same message.
I dl'ed mIRC also, and got the exact same thing happening, down to the T, except the message was "Unable to resolve server."
Can anyone help me?
Edit: I have cable internet, not DSL.

Maybe you have the IRC ports firewalled?
Do you have a software firewall like ZoneAlarm running?

I sometimes get the unable to resolve server. If you click the disconnect right when it says that, and then quickly click connect after you discon, it sometimes work. Or at least that what works for me.
Hurry up too, you're missing all the funnays:

I'm sorry, I have cable, not DSL, like I had previously said.
No, I don't have any firewall software.
I do have a router, someone told me to check the settings but I have no idea what to do.
My thoughts are........WDI
You might try to get the IP of the server.
Ive been getting errors like that all week (for me though its relateed to FTP stuff)

You might try to get the IP of the server.
Does anybody want to get it for me? Because obviously I can't. :p
AFAIK: 207.44.238.61 (Port 6667)
-Neo
Syntax: /server 207.44.238.61:6667 if that could help

I'm in the exact same situation as you, and I didn't have to open any ports to use mIRC. You do have to open ports for DCC, but to just connect to the server you should be fine.

OK, I type in the IP and try to connect from that in mIRC, but now I get the message "Unable to connect to server (Network is down)." It's connecting to port 6667 by default so no problems there..

I could connect to the server (I'm using mIRC v6.01), but it didn't finish logging me on.

Maybe we should just change servers, to something a bit larger and a bit more stable than devcore? X_x

It's always stable for me. I must have done it. :p
Err...
Here, why don't you just try clicking on this link and see if it works (if you have downloaded MiRC).
