Hey guys,

I'm working on my neighbor's old HP, and it's acting really weird. When i try to start it up, the floppy, HDD, and power lights blink rapidly at the same time, and the comp. won't start up. No fans or anything. Any thoughts? My guess is a busted power supply, but it could be the mobo...your help would be appreciated :)

Probably it is the SMPS....
Do you hear any sounds at all...like beeps?..if they are rapid then probably your RAM is improper or not connected properly..
try connectiong your HDD to another computer and see if it loads from that...

It's not the hard drive that's the problem, because the computer doesn't start up at all...maybe the RAM thing or make sure you have everything connected in the right way and nice and tight. Are any of the cords from the power supply to parts of the computer hooked up backwards or anything?

If the Moniter loads to at least the mem check and then the lights starts blinking ..it could be an HDD prob...(or doesn;t the moniter load at all)....

If the screen remains blank then it is most probably Ram or Low power or bad SMPS

If nothing is loading (fans arent starting) it maybe the mobo.

Ive had llike 3 burn out on me and that sounds similar. Check it with a diff power supply though (no reason to blow money on a new mobo if the PSU is the prob :P)

It's either the power supply or the motherboard, otherwise you should get POST beeps. Check to see if anything connected directly to the power supply (CD/DVD drives, fans (possibly) and the hard drive itself) shows signs of activity. If not, the power supply is the problem. If they do work, then the connection is either in the motherboard, or the power supply lines to the motherboard.

Haha. If a computer just hangs as the BIOS loads, a setting may be corrupted. Try resetting the BIOS by either finding the clear jumper on the mobo or removing and reinserting the battery. Also make sure that all connections are tight. If that doesn't work, it probably is the either the motherboard itself or the PSU as mentioned above.
