View Full Version : Suggestion on tables
Can't here be implemented a basic tabling system, for use in sigs/etc. It could be style-based, so all table types would be controllable by the staff.
Where we need it? Well, for example, in signatures, when images could be placed more freely, and other things. It shouldn't be a hard thing to do, either.
Some suggestions on how it should function:
BBcode. Creates a <table> element, which takes its definitions from the style, so it could be a 0-border, 0-cellpadding and 0-cellspacing table.
Then, there could be several types of [table], which could be accessed by [table=1], [table=2] etc. Each one has different definitions, for different uses.
After the [table] element, should come the BBcode/element. It shouldn't need any definitions, but the BBcode/element could have some, although not necessary.
Then there is the closing BBcodes, , , .

These, described above, would be a nice addition here, but in no way a must-have. The examples of doing this are just suggestions, as I don't have any "real" knowledge on implementing forum codes.
This may be "exploitable", as this could break postbit (which is based on tables, right?), so...

I think it's a good idea. Fo rexample, when you are making a list, or something of that nature. It may be hard to implement. For example, will the tables all be a fixed width, or how big woudl the table columns be?
What I mean is, how do you define the width? Is it possible to have something like [table width=100%] or is that too advanced for bbcode?
There can be defaulted widths, which are defined in the style.

I'm sure there's a way to implement it without stetching the postbit. It would just involve some creative HTML + CSS replacement values for the [tble] thing.

I don't think you can break the postbit using those tags: if a tag is opened but not closed nothing happens, such as: [b]Hello world!
Nice idea though.

Why not enable HTML? It has tables.
yeah.. enable html. right.

Haha, wasn't thinking when I posted that.
Dont need tables for posting in the forum. Want to align your signature? Use the Right, Left or Center...
Theres really no need to implement Table BBcode.

But it would be kind of fun to try to make table bbcode that couldn't be abused :p. Mmmm, trouble solving, I love it :o. I may have a go at making this just for the hell of it.

The point is not for alignment, but for doing like a sig image on the left and some textual content on the right, to get the full use of one's signature space.

Well I'll tell you one thing, if we can't have tables, at least let us type spaces wherever we want. As it is, if you put 100 spaces at the beginning of a line, they all go away when you post. Which means you have limited lining-up options.
Edit: Ha! Nice trick Grassdragon!

Can't you use non-breaking spaces? I'll test that now.
Edit: Yes, you can use non-breaking spaces if you use the number code (& #160 ;)(no spaces) instead of the lettered code ( ).
You could always just use color=(background) and put some underscores. Its what I did with my sig... I think theres a total of 2 underscores xD

EDIT: Woops, I do that @ BF to line up the moogle with the edge of my sig. Oh well. You know what I mean I hope :P

Only for higher resolutions though. On lower resolutions, it stretches the postbit past the screen area, and we don't want that. :D

Who here actually uses something like 800x600 or, dare I say it, 600x480. *Gasp*
I think in this day and age, people should at least be one step above 800x600. Ah well, your choice.

Very true. 1200 x 1024 Here.
Anyways, tables definitely have their advantages. I don't really see any disadvantages, to having these features.
How about allowing Flash? That would be pretty cool, having the ability to embed flash animations into your post...
Actually, never mind. I take this back. It would be horrible with all that actionscript that I know. I could cause problems. :)
Youknow about 40% of internet surfers use 800x600.
Most use 1024x768 (or + if your a gamer really)
Most people still only design sites for 1024x ... At least those with mercy to those of us with older components.
My monitor runs at 1024 (as its at now) but it makes things blurry a bit and the brightness/color kinda shifts a bit...

Tables are sooo abusable. :D Like PiXeLs said:

That would, like, completely destroy the whole page. :D Trust me, it would look like poo.

Ah well, your choice.I think that suggested resolution relates more to the size of the monitor than the current day and age. Although it is true that most people are cruising with 17" as opposed to the 15" that used to be more common.
With a 17" I really wouldn't go any more than 1024 wide, but that's my opinion.

You know what would be neat though, the ability to add iframes to signatures.
Of course this would lead to problems with dialup users(as they may end up downloading 100 pages by going to one thread X_x, so it'd be necessary to find a way to allow users to hide iframe sigs unless they click a button or something like that :p. I'm just dreaming though, so don't mind me ^_^.

No iframes!
iframes are a proprietary standard of Microsoft and are highly abusable, mostly through flaws in internet explorer (ironic, isn't it?).

It only becomes an issue if whoever's using it is an idiot. :p

Actually, they are a part of the HTML 4.01 Spec. Look here:
http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/present/frames.html#h-16.5
They work quite well in IE, Mozilla, and Firefox; although I don't think they are a good idea for signatures.

I was not aware that they were added to HTML 4.01. I had always thought they were only directly supported by IE and that other browsers had trouble with them. Still, they are bad for the forums.
I dont know. I kinda of like them, it makes for easier maintenance of signatures (especially randomizing them)
Ive not used a browser actually that cant use IFrames either (thats why I love them now)
Its kinda neat to, I used to do IFrame signature "sites" tiny lil sites with quotes and what not, lol, It was really fun. But I wouldnt suggest we allow it pubically. Since people could specify bg sounds and what not...
