good question. i think nothing will "happen" to it. look at the warcraft series. theres about 3 (not including WoW) and nothing has really "happened" to them.

Same with Diablo 2.

If people like graphics, then they would probably stick with SC2...

but if some gameplay changes in SC2, people who likes the original gameplay would probably stick with good old Starcraft...

but you guys would already know that ;)

There will be a lot of hype, people will buy it and have fun. Are you expecting armageddon?

Bleh, nothing is going to happen. People will probably stop playing 1 unless 2 is uber unbalanced or somethin.

the majority of sc1 players will play sc2 and then the remainder will slowly go to sc2

unless its system requirements r too high or its rly unbalenced

hmm, lets compare this to the HL1 and 2 thing...

me personally, when I got my copy of HL2, I looked at the HL1 graphics and shuddered... (even the so called 'source' version made me shudder). I can't wait until BlackMesaSource(.com) comes out...

Half-Life: Source was just Half-Life 1 with a physics engine. No shit it made you shudder.

SC1 will initioally decline, but then when SC2 gets more popular, SC1 will explode in populatiry, look at alot of games and you'll see.

The SC fans will immediately start buying and playing it. Eventually, the possessed players will return to the original (e.g. Protoss_Honor), while the majority will permanently stay on SC2.

If it's really bad, then everyone will still buy it, for will continue with the original until modern computers can no longer support it (e.g. like a 486 Windows game).

Same with Diablo 2.

I fail to see how these apply. For starters, the only WarCraft RTS anyone plays is WC3. No. 1 is long dead, and I don't belive No. 2's B.net servers are suported any longer. I belive I tried logging on once (I do have the game, somewhere around here :P) but it wouldn't let me. And I know no one who plays the game in any fashion, anyways.

As for Diablo 2, no sequels have followed it, so of course it's still going.

If SC 2 comes out, I belive that the originals lifespan will be cut short drasticly. Why play a ten year old game when you can play a new one?

Well, it would probably stay on bnet for a couple of years depending on play time...

And you can't really tell if SC 1 would float out of internet exsistance...

This is only partly due to the sequel; Warcraft 1 is long outdated regardless, it has lousy graphics and gameplay compared to today's games. Same goes for Warcraft 2, although not to the same extent. My impression is that people only play those for "remember-when" reasons. ;)

Like I said before, if the game is perceived as inferior to the original (which no doubt many will think), then SC's lifespan will not be drastically cut short compared to when it would "die out" naturally. :)

WC2 still is supported by BNET (There is a BNET version of WC2 that is sold), and still has a cult following and a web-based ladder system that users implemented. It's more competitive than WC3 I would say, since 2v2 and 1v1 are their main games.

I don't think WC1 is supported, though.

WC1 has never been supported by Bnet.

Not "IF" but WHEN SC2 comes out, it will have an initial hit where everyone who was looking forward to it buys it the day it comes out, or soon afterwards, then the sales will drop as the smarter players will watch and see what the general consensus is before buying it themselves.
Sales of SC1 will increase as new people brought in by SC2 wish to see what SC1 was like.
Over time, sales of SC1 will decrease and sales of SC2 will increase or decrease depending on the quality of the game.
I'm sure SC1 will have an initial drop of players who shift to 2, then more players will be brought in who are new to the SC series, but not a lot, then the numbers will dwindle to a minimal number of hardcore players, and koreans.

Economics ftw.

I think when SC2 comes out that SC1 will still be more popular than most games because it is a cult-classic. Also because SC1 was made with 2D graphics, the game does not look that bad when you go back to it. For me, it's mostly old 3D games that are hard to look at when you've seen games like Resident Evil 4, Half-Life 2, Gears of War, etc...

Yes Warcraft II is still supported, but know that the only people who still play it are die-hards. It is practically impossible to beat them.
