but im going to get guild wars and not wow. why would i do something so rash and so brainless? well because wow is going to be great, however you have to pay the monthly fee and its online only. now guild wars is online only too but there is no monthly fee. it is my way of protesting and will probably do nothing because every9one else will buy it anyway and this one customer wont hurt them at all. if you guys couldnt tell from my first two posts here i am obsessed with having a warcraft action/adventure/rpg/ all of them would work ;) that you dont have to pay for monthly or that is sp too. i have games from the early 1990's that i still play, if im paying my hard earned cabbage on a game i want to be able to play it ten years from now, not just while the game is popular. im sorry to drop this on you guys, but i wanted to know if im alone in feeling this way or if others see it this way too. at least with guild wars you can get your 50 cabbage worth and not have to pay for it monthly. thanks for hearin me out

well i like GW as well and it IS a big plus that there is no monthly fee..i suspect that if i buy WoW i would find it better but yeah as of right now a monthly fee is kinda steep for me..(i don't think it is decided but like $10 per month?).....

of course GW plans to release many expansion as an alternate income source instead of the monthly fee

Yeah, if I want to get a MMORPG I will get GuildWars. It has no monthly fee.

The monthly fee is ok with me.

I think Wow should drop the monthly fee, and increase the cost to purchase it all togheter, instead.

I'll stick with the monthly fee.. it's not that costly.

No monthly fees for me, please. Plus, being Australian I get the feeling I'll have to pay extra to make up for exchange rates... urgh.

If you buy a game you should be able to play it on your own, in my opinion. If Blizzard are intent on charging their monthly fees they'd better provide some bloody good service to make it worthwhile...

Plus, they should make a single-player side of it, and, as Fratt once suggested, put the storyline missions in the time where the Burning Legion first attacked 10 000 years ago before the timeline of WarCraft III, and such. That whould be..well, joyable ;)

Someone whom shares my dream!

Perhaps It could at least be as an unoffical mod for WOW.

I wish you could mod warcraft III, you know like call of duty.

I'm not sure if you've guys ever played a MMO game before, but they definately don't work like that X_x. It just wouldn't really be feasable, and it'd mean that Blizz devs would have to give out some key server information, which isn't really safe :/.

Hmm, I most likely will not be getting WoW. Whenever I buy something, it takes me a while to start paying it / get into it. For this reason, I will not pay a monthly fee. GW will be fine for me, if I have enough money, I might go for Wow, but it looks doubtful.

wow, i dont realy know you guys and because of that i expected to get flamed for that, but i had to get it off my chest lol. anyway, ya i think its a scam if you pay to buy a game, pay to play it monthly, then you can never play it again if they shutdown the servers. i think they should raise the entry fee and drop the monthly fee like someone else (sorry i forgot who said it already :S) said. i dont understand the concept of mmorpg. why cant they just make it an 8 player co-op w/ the option of bot guildmates? as far as pvp they could make it like any other mp game with an area like on battle.net where guilds could meet up and challenge each other, essentialy this is what mmorpg comes down to anyway. you play with your group against the ai in scripted missions and basicaly interact w/ other players in set areas (from what i understand). i dunno, again just my opinion. i think mmorpg is a slap in the face to gamers and is a good reminder of how the devs and such dont have any passion for their work, its all about the $$$. dont get me wrong i think it should be about the cash, but i think there should be some level of loyalty from the devs to their fans, since w/o fans there would be no dev.

edit - btw you guys are pretty cool and this has to be the most civil forum i have ever visited or have been a part of. ;)

Though i see your point in some sense...but many people who are MMORPG fans like the feel and the excitement of actully being in a digital world that is inhabited by players all around the world..Its a rush to actually feel that your chracter actually lives in that world and to make that experience possible you have to be particular about how the game is made. WoW i believe would be a whole new world experience though i still reckon monthly fees is a bit too much.
IMO GW is more like what you refer to as it has instanced quests for every team.

TranquilNightElf hit the nail on the head.

I think the main reason you guys don't understand the point of the monthly fee is partially because you've never played a MMORPG before. I would suggest that everyone here have a go at downloading a trial version of a MMORPG and playing it for the two weeks or so that you can. Perhaps then you'll understand the feel of the community, excitement, liveliness, adventure, etc. etc.

When you're playing in a rich, community-inhabited MMORPG you really understand why they need the extra money they do. You see a world which is yours to shape, where you can be the famous hero who slayed a thousand orcs, or the epic traveller who walked the entire continent in a day, or the leader of the guild that conquered an opposing force. It's like living in another world, which is really nice, as we all need a break from reality from time to time ^_^.

Erm, that isn't really an original idea. I don't think he really had to source anything, since he likely had the same idea, and could have had it much earlier than you X_x.

lol calm down i gave you credit, just forgot your name... :shiftyl:

you are right though guys, i never have played a mmorpg. i would like to try one like wow or lineage, but most dont have a trial. i wanted to try star wars galaxies, but you have to pay an outrageous gamespy fee for the 14 day trial. what are some links to some good mmorpg trials?

Graeme
06-21-2004, 8:03 PM
As far as I know, gamespy currently offers the SWG trial even if you don't have a payed membership. So I'd definitely look that up first if you're interested.

As for me, I'll be downloading the Ragnarok trial tomorrow sometime afternoon ^_^. I hear that there are servers without any fees for Ragnarok as well, so I'll keep my ears open if anyone is interested. I'm not certain if these servers are legal though, so I may not be able to give out any info if that's the case (some help I am).

Anyway, just look around a bit. There's a plethora of free-trial MMOs to choose from, you just have to find one that best suits you ^_^. Good luck!

Modred

I haven't played much in the way of MMORPGs, however I did play a bit of Asheron's Call, and I must say that a good game is worth the fee, which is usually $10 a month or less.

Also, Modred has a idea. There are volunteer software projects on the internet (the one that comes to mind is Not Another Network) that are run by volunteer effort and the occasional donation that keeps the domain name in place. If Blizzard could find a large enough number of dedicated WoW players who are willing to dedicate their time and resources to run volunteer servers, it would cut down costs. But there is a downside. Different servers might be up to different standards, and gameplay could suffer.
