What: Map contest by me.
Prize: Reputation, and playtime/reps.
When: *new* Sunday March 25th, 6pm EST is cutoff. Judging will be complete by the following Wednesday.
Where: Post your best map as an attachment here in this thread.
Tileset: Black Citadel or Outland
Size/Intended Play: 1v1 or 2v2 size Melee Map
How I'll judge: I will give numeric scores (I'll actually do this on pen and paper, and if you guys want I can give everyone their scores in each area, not just the winner, so you'll have feedback) based on these 4 categories:
1 - Balance. I'm looking for balanced map for all races, so basically map size is an issue (huge map + easy natural expansion = too good for human, too many small chokes is too good for UD, etc). I would also like shops included, including a tavern. Make sure these are relatively balanced to each players spawn, etc, so that not one spawn has the easiest time getting to shop.
2 - Flow. I don't want to try and scout my opponents spawn or expansion and have my scouter instantly aggro'ed by creeps and die. I also don't want to have to creep 23948248 spots before I see my opponent. A couple of bridges are nice, but not too many. I also don't want my units that are rallied to my hero to be aggro'ed by creeps on their way to my army. I want to be able to expand, but not directly next to my base (unless it's a small map and my opponent can make me pay for it).
3 - Appeal. I'm looking not only for a good ladder 1v1 or 2v2 map, but also something that looks fun. I want to see things I don't normally see in ladder (thus why I chose that tileset). Make it fun, and visually appealing (mini-map as well). Quick load times are a plus. Have a good name for the map. All those things. I really want you to wow me with a mixture of successful ladder based map plus new and fun things us players who play on the same 10 map rotation don't normally see.
4 - Replayability. I plan on hosting a tournament in the Wacraft Townhall section after this contest (and I plan on holding 2 more, for a total of 3 maps). I don't want to just play this map once and be done with it. I'm thinking of all the players who will play and how much they will all want to play in them. I want us all to like the maps and to possibly play customs on them as well. Pretend you are submitting this map to the B.NET monthly map submission and you are hoping your map is chosen to be the month of March for a melee ladder map. Maybe take a look at the melee maps currently in rotation and try and figure out what makes them successful and incorporate those into your map as well.
So each section will have some comments by me, as well as a score from 1-10 (1 being lowest, 10 being highest), for a total of 40 points. I will also hold a hopefully successful tournament using this as one of the maps in rotation, so you will actually get to see player comments (possibly bitching), and replays on the maps.
Good luck to everyone who submits a map!
Tom
