View Full Version : I. Sprained. My. Thumb. w00rt >_>

Right, this happened at the gym this afternoon, prolly around four. My mate and I were doing crunches and, since I had already finished mine, I was watching him do his.
Now, since these were the last of the series, I kind of expected he might be a bit tired, so I offered to help him out if he needed to, he said yes. No problem this far
But, when he was just about to finish, it happened o_O *drum roll*. I don't know if I counted wrong or if he decided he'd go for that extra last one, but at the same moment I began extending my hand to help him up, he suddenly [and rather unexpectedly :<] goes up on his own. WHAM. His elbow slams into my outstreched hand and pushes my thumb all the way back against my palm. Ow... all I remember is the joint snapping rather nastily and yanking my hand back to safety. Oh, it hurt O_o
Anyway, it appears to be a minor injury, it's not too swollen and the doctor says it's not the worst ever. Although it hurt my extensor and opponent tendons, which means my thumb is going to be a worthless piece of meat for the next weeks. Good thing it wasn't my left hand the one that got hit... at least I can still do most things [Although tying my shoelaces and typing is hell - this post alone took me 15 minutes to put up o_O]
And yeah, I know it serves me right for being an idiot and not asking him if we was done already. Tool :P
EDIT: OMG it's going purple! Quick... get me a bone saw... or a steak >_>

That sucks reminds me of the time I got Drunk and High, woke up with a broken arm and a nasty concussion. Ouch still hurts.

Purple? O_o
sprains suck arse. I've sprained my wrist 2-3 times and my ankle once or twice. it sucks when you sprain the ankle, you have to have crutches :\
Also, on time I accidentally slammed my hand against a wall. For some reason back then I never really told anyone or saught medical attention. It eventually cleared up, but it hurt like a bitch. I could barely curl my fingers at all without extreme pain, and trying to game... well that was a wholenother story.
Anyway, I've never heard of anyone spraining their thumb. Its strange, I only really use one of my thumbs for typing.

Its strange, I only really use one of my thumbs for typing.
Care to guess which one I use most? My right one -_-, but if it was only the thumb, there'd be no problem, thing is it shares a nerve with the index finger, so it hurts like hell too every time I extend either of them.
Basically, my typing sk1llz are h4xx3d until I get used to left-shifting and single-finger punching everything on the right side of my keyboard. It'll take me some hours at most :P

Anyway, I've never heard of anyone spraining their thumb.
Neither had I. Just goes to prove how unique I am
EDIT: I can't use capital U, I and Y! I keep automatically trying to punch them in with my middle finger while holding shift down with my pinky, until I remind myself it's easier to use the left shift. It sucks -_- :P
Heh. Just take your time when typing I guess =P
Sounds painful, but at least nothing is broken >_<!!!

Aww, that sucks. I've been fortunate enough to have never sprained anything. Get well, soon I guess.

Try typing without using your thumb. I didn't find it that hard, mostly the fact that there seems to be something missing, but I didn't find anything wrong with it...just a eerie feeling...hmm...

Sad to hear that, Zelt.
Hey, look on the bright side, if you write using your right hand, now you have an excuse for dreaming or copying notes slow in class. :P

Eck. That sucks.
I'd be unable to do pretty much anything at all if my LEFT hand got hurt, but I suck well enough with it as is.

Good luck with recovering from that sprain, Zelt'. ;) Although you're not the only one I know to have had one in that place. A friend of mine had one while playing Basketball. He tried to stop a pass, received badly the ball in his hand and voilá. On his behalf, he did get the game to stop but just to get him to the hospital.

I feel sorry for you, back when I was in high school I broke my middle finger on my right hand, being right handed it meant I couldn't write for a few days and after that it was very difficult to write. I had have it strapped to my ring finger for support for a couple of months, was still bruised after that too so I hope yours heals a lot faster.

Oh come on, you girl. You sprained your thumb? Big deal. I hate to break it to you, but that kind of injury doesn't really deserve as much attention as you've given it. Little shit happens to me all the time, like for instance this morning I woke up with many stinging cuts all over my body and I don't know how they got there but I assume it's related to a hard night of drinking.
This is not entirely directed at you Zelt, but it really peeves me when guys complain about injuries. If anything, you should be proud of them. I have great stories like how I wiped out on a scooter on the highway that runs along the Amalfi Coast in Italy. Almost slid off the 200-foot cliff into the ocean. But I still had to get up, shake myself off, and ride another 30-40 miles of this twisty road with a broken hand (hard to do) to meet my ship which was scheduled to leave port around the time of the crash.
I can't count the number of times I've sprained an ankle, or wrist, or bruised bones, jammed fingers, broken fingers, seriously burned myself, road rash, etc.. I can't even lean on my right elbow anymore without being in excruciating pain due to the amount of scar tissue there that puts pressure on the bone. But these are minor injuries. It only makes you stronger (most of the time).
So bottom line, complain all you want, but you better have a good story to go along with it or I'm just going to laugh silently to myself with disdain when you tell me you jammed your thumb and are crying about it. A high tolerance for pain is a good thing to learn. It allows you to be in greater touch with your body, you can avoid taking pain medicines, and so forth. When you have a higher tolerance, you still feel just as much pain as the next guy, and believe me you will hurt, but you are able to push through it and not let it affect your daily activities. You don't stay at home in bed but go out and are still able to exert yourself physically, close to 100%.

Well, I wrecked my motorcycle into some kind od cocrete traffic thing once. That sucked.
Then there was that time I got bodyslammed by two dudes while holding the ball playing Rugby and I think my nose snapped. That sucked, too.
Turf toe blows, too. Talk about immobilizing. You think you're better and then you try to take off into a sprint and ow, fuck! Still there. BTW you just aggravated it. Nice going.
And sort of off topic, I wouldn't avoid taking pain medicine. Esp. narcotics like morphine, hydrocodone, stuff like that. From what I understand, there's no such thing as a cure for pain, but sweet mamma-jamma, they come close. The problem, though, is that you build up a tolerance so even a lifetime supply isn't a lifetime supply. C'est la vie. :)

I've got a high pain tolerance and I rarely complain about injuries. I just tend to avoid getting injured.

I got the entire front of my leg cooked by a whole pot of fresh from the kettle tea fall all over my front leg, while wearing a polyhester legging. I didn't even go to the doctor untill a week had passed. I didn't tell you guys about it. So, Hammocksleeper has a point.
Sadly, the burn marks are all gone, damn.

Alright hammy, first off, where exactly in my post did you find me moaning on how poor little me had screwed up his ickle finger? The second paragraph, where I say it's going to be useless for the following weeks? Conceded, that is an overstatement. But there's a huge gap between that and being a whiner.
So I went to see a doctor over an injury that didn't even merit immobilisation. Big deal, it's only a 5 minute walk from the gym to faculty, where there's doctors everywhere. That's not being a cry baby, that's just common sense. Especially because my career choice is surgery ;).
Point here is, I started this thread not because I wanted forumers patting me on the back and going "poor Zelt, get well soon", but because as I pointed out to Nahotnoj, I had never heard of someone getting a sprained thumb [dislocated because of cell phones, yes, but nothing more] to laugh at myself a bit because of the absurd manner I had gotten injured.
Now, if I had wanted to make this a self-pity thread, there's so many things I could have moaned about.
For starters, I live with my brother and my gran, which means I have to do everything for myself. Now wouldn't that have been the first thing I would've bitched about?
"Oh, seriously mang, my life sucks becos i have to wash my clothes and it's soooo hard hanging them afterwordst when you can't grab things becos your finger is throbbing oh my"
Or
could have easily rambled on how long my route home is [that's 1 hour and a half on two 5' high buses which are usually crammed] and how I had to undergo excruciating, unbearable, mind-crushing pain because I had a boo boo on my thumb.
But my post is only 15 lines long out of which 9 merely describe how it happened, 4 more are conclusions and the last 2 are less than serious. But pity is hardly the thing I'm after. I've had it just as rough as any other bloke and you don't see me being a bitch about it.
So, hammock, although I have you in high regard, it does bug me when you go along and take me for a moaning little wuss with a low pain threshold. I admit, though, that I expected a thread like this to get a reply like yours. I just thought I was getting it from GA :P

If feel real sorry for you, I would imagine that the small injuries would be the most painful simply because of the inconveniance and simply forgetting about it.
But i've never fractured, broken, sprained or strained anything. The worst i've ever had is a cold and meningitis (before the jab).

Wow how ironic. Yesterday I was playing basketball, and jammed my middle and ring finger on my left hand. I was going for a rebound. The ball took a sharp bounce of the rim, at kind of an odd angle, and I basically stuck my hand into the ball. I think the two fingers bent back on the middle knuckle. They are both pretty swollen, and I can't put any pressure on them yet. My middle finger is also pretty bruised. Gonna be hard to play any starcraft for a while. =[
Hope your thumb gets better, I know how you feel lol.
