I wrote this for the WCR Forums this evening, thought I'd share it with you for discussion purposes.
--------------------------
Note that these rankings are not based on my opinion. They are based on cold, hard facts.
Seeing the new "Zone Rank International" for Warcraft 3 in the Scene News, and the lack of some very big names - as well as Zeus being 6th, I decided to do what anyone could do if they could be bothered (took me 2 hours) and compiled my own world rankings.
The rankings are based on the following tournaments and leagues, mainly international, and mainly from the last 4 months.
The GGC/PPLive Race Wars 2
NGLOne Season 2 Playdays 1-6 - minus a couple of missing matches. Note that the NGLOne site wasn't working and the WCR articles were incomplete, hence 4 missing clan wars, mainly involving players not in the top 20.
The WC3L Season 10 Playoffs and Finals
WC3L Season 11 Playdays 1 and 2
WCG 2006 - Points were given for the knockout stages and not the groups.
The All Stars Series
WSVG Finals
IEST
ESWC Finals
Note that KODE5 has not been included, because no individual "games won" data could be found for the finals.
How the Rankings Work
I looked at each individual player's performance in the respective tournament, and gave them one point for each game they won. Take Sky's run to the finals and subsequent win of WCG 2006. He won 10 maps in the knockout stages, and receives 10 points. I thought it would probably be fairer that way, instead of "delegating" certain points for winning different tournaments, like the ZRI rankings.
The Top 20
The moment you've all been waiting for, I shall toy with you no longer. Across all the mentioned tournaments;
1st: mYm]Lucifer with 59 points - Lucifer played in almost all of the tournaments and leagues mentioned and had strong performances in many, despite not winning a lot of them outright.
2nd: 4K.ToD with 43 points - ToD had extremely strong performances in WCG 2006, (finishing second,) and WC3L, as well as scoring good points in a few other tournaments.
3rd: 4K.Grubby with 39 points - Grubby won WSVG, but losing in the Quarters of WCG and losing in the first round of the ESWC finals keep him out of the top two.
4th: wNv.FoV with 33 points - FoV has been a consistent performer as of late, winning the All Stars Series and performing well for wNv in leagues.
5th: WE.IGE.Sky with 30 points - Sky may have won WCG, but his absence from a few biggies drops him down to fifth.
6th: mYm]Moon with 29 points - Moon's exceedingly strong performances in NGLOne and WC3L set the scene for a 6th place finish. Had I included the MBCGame 3-0 victory over Grubby, he would be 5th.
7th: WE.IGE.ReMinD with 27 points - ReMinD won Season 4, but has not featured a lot in NGLOne and WC3L over the last few months, and places seventh.
8th: mouz.GeiL.SaSe with 24 points - SaSe won hearts in China, and he won points in these rankings through appearances in many big tournaments and good league performances.
9th: WE.IGE.Lyn with 23 points - Lyn has been on fire in NGLOne and WC3L, being the most valued player across the first 6 playdays and equal second across all the WC3L matches included. However, his absence from many big tournaments leaves him ninth.
10th: 4K.Creolophus with 20 points - Not a lot of people bet on Creolophus being one of the best in the world when he joined 4K, but he's been consistent in leagues, and reached the Quarter Finals of WCG.
11th: WE.IGE.SoJu with 19 points - SoJu has gained points in many of the tournaments and leagues mentioned, but no big wins and no stand out performances.
12th: SK.Insomnia with 18 points - I was surprised to see Insomnia in the top 20. He hasn't scored many points in any one league or tournament, but has scored a few in almost every one, and reaches twelfth on the list.
13th: SK.HoT with 17 points - HoT's strong WCG performance netted him 8 points, but outside of that his game has been a little more lacklustre, and he's down in thirteenth.
14th: BeT.Sweet with 16 points - Perhaps the big shock of the rankings - Sweet has featured in the finals of a few major tournaments, but doesn't really play in any leagues, and so lacks points in that sector.
15th: fnatic.XyLigan with 15 points - XyLigan played well in WCG and has been doing quite well for fnatic recently, getting a fairly good 15 points. One for the future, methinks!
16th=: fnatic.Satiini with 13 points - Satiini is a stalwart on the Warcraft scene, and he's wormed his way into the top 20, with strong performances in leagues, but no appearances in tournaments.
16th=: mYm]Susiria with 13 points - Susiria is a strong player, and has performed well for mYm in leagues, but with a lack of big tournament appearances, he places equal sixteenth.
18th=: WE.IGE.TeD with 10 points - TeD may be a big innovator, and many will admire him for that, but although he has brains, he's distinctly lacking in the points section.
18th=: mouz.HackerFly100% with 10 points - A couple of tournament appearances for Fly since he joined mousesports, but no big wins yet, and no big league appearances.
18th=: mouz.GeiL.Happy with 10 points - Happy has certainly been consistent in leagues for mousesports, but he isn't putting in many appearances in big tournaments, and just creeps into the top 20 at equal eighteenth.
I hope you enjoyed reading the article, and I think this is a pretty good reflection of the Warcraft scene at the moment. I also hope you appreciate the time I took to compile these rankings.
Kindest regards,
