I can see that the person holding the bottle is a US soldier. They apparently got bored in Iraq and started this distasteful joke.

Well I was recently surfing through you tube when this video caught my eye. It appears many people have watched this video and in usual "You-Tube" fashion, expressed their reactions very vividly. Remarkably reactions where mostly two sided, with one side condemning the soldiers and the other expressing how they felt the Iraqi kids deserved that sort of treatment. (though its fair to say there were more of the foremost than the last.)

So I wondered how people around here would react to it.

What sickens me is that the one toying with these kids is obviously the one in charge (the cameraman refers to him as sir). He's stupid enough to film his distasteful actions and then let it get put on youtube for the world to see. He's definitely a bad example of what American soldiers really are. The sad part is that people are gonna look at this video and use it to generalize about the rest of the troops over there.

Yeah, that was shameful and disturbing. What the soldiers don't realize is that they're only feeding the perpetual hatred cycle by their little jokes like this. That little Iraqi kid doesn't realize it now, but when he gets older he'll probably remember American soldiers taunting him and making him run for bottled water. When he's old enough to realize this, it'll most likely only build onto the dislike that he has. That again, leads to a vicious cycle where that Iraqi might do something to a soldier, who in turn might do another stunt like this.

It's amazing how a small clip can ruin my evening and make me depressed.

Dont be an idiot.

This isn't the worst thing in the world, I think they were just having fun more then trying to be cruel. I do however, agree that its pretty distasteful and without decency. Second however, none of us were there so we don't know the whole story, this might be some kind of tradition/game played with the local kids of the area.

I think it's pretty obvious that this wasn't anything other than a couple of soldiers being right bastards. It's like when people taunt dogs - "Come on... get the cookie... jump! Come on..." - and keep yanking it away just before they get it.

Of course, the dog ends up with the cookie. I felt kinda bad for the kid when they unceremoniously threw the water overboard and some other (bigger) random kids pounced on it.

This is akin to little kids being picked on by older children. Don't give me the "but they're Americans, they should know better!" bullshit either, apply the same argument to teenagers messing with little kids and you get the same result: one side is bored, the other side provides entertainment. Of course, teenagers don't bait needy children like the video shows, but it's in essence the same deal. Do I approve of it? Hell no, but that doesn't mean I can't rationalize it.

I think everybody's overreacting. These guys are assholes, yeah. Well, I encountered like 5 on my way to work this morning. So what, it's not something to freak out about. They're soldiers, sure, but they're people too.

Nobody was really harmed, and the worst thing that happened was a kid was out of breath. Not only that, we don't even know the whole story; maybe they drove through a neighborhood where kids normally threw rocks at them or something.

Blah, I can agree that those guys were being dicks but I really don't see what's so horrible about it.

I can get over people being dicks, but that's not my problem with it. My problem is that they filmed it. Didn't US troops get enough bad press and a bad image in the world with the Abu Graib incident (not saying this compares to that at all). I just think that if you're gonna be a dick, be smart enough to keep it off the internet for the whole world to see. We've already got an image problem over there, this isn't gonna help it.

Yup, that's a git. Seriously, if you're feeling that bored, then just go somewhere private and masturbate. It's doubleplusfun, you're not doing wrong to anyone AND you're not wasting the petrol on that jeep. Sheez, is that so hard to figure out?

Although...man, that little chap can run [which was the real point of the thread, no?]. ++karma for him :P

They weren't just fucking around in a jeep. They were probably out on patrol and doing their job and decided to have a little fun. If they were doing that they'd get in deep shit with FWA (Fraud, Waste, and Abuse).
and yes, that kid can run.

We've already got an image problem over there, this isn't gonna help it.
We'll always have a media problem over there. With 24/7 news coverage in the AOR the news will blow everything out of proportion. Add the fact that the enemy has a kick ass publicist. They claim a "Great victory for Allah" when they kill even one, yet we kill 4 of them in the same engagement. However when we raid a terrorist cell, kill 5 terrorists capture 5 more and seize of cache of mortars, AK-47s (which I might add on a completely off topic point are the most over rated weapon ever.) We keep it quiet and barely make any mention of it at all. The PA the military has needs work, because if they can actually show all of the good we are doing over there, then prehaps support might swing back for those not opposed to the war.
Also, if you are some sort of half-assed arm chair general who says that the forces over there are doing very little aside from driving around and shooting, you can go screw yourself with a sharp stick, because you don't know shit. I have friends over there who have helped build schools in Afghanistan, and ferried people from their homes to the voting stations during elections in both Iraq and Afghanistan just to name a few things.

Now I'm not sure if that last part was directed towards me or just people in general uber. Now trust me, I'm no "arm chair general", I'm from a military family, my dad served in the military for 21 years. Anyway, I completely agree with you, we do a LOT more good over there than the media will ever tell the American people. What I was saying was that these soldiers should know that, anything they do that looks even slightly wrong is going to get blown out of proportion, the least they can do is not film it. I still don't think what they were doing was right though, maybe after a block or two they could give him the water, but waiting as long as they did was just mean.

Actually, if people identify the actions of some random idiots with the actions of American in general, then those people are judgemental and stereotypist.

But yeah, that was really mean. The poor little kids...I hope that one boy gets to go to the olympics some day.

Well sadly a large number of Americans, and the rest of the world do just that. But they're not seeing just one stupid action, they see every stupid action a few hundred times on the news, and then don't hear any of the good that's being done.

No shit. They claimed victory when we killed al-Zarauqi (sp).

It's like, "Uh, guys, we just bombed your fucking leader with two 500 lb. bombs. I don't know what al-Zarauqi's last thoughts were when all hell broke loose when he was chilling with his preacher, but I am 100% positive they weren't 'I can see my intestines spilling out of my stomach, victory is mine'".

And what's really weird is that some people are making monuments to the American soldiers that die over there. Yeah, sure, 3k have died. But haven't around, say, 100x more Iraqis died? We get so focused sometimes that we miss the bigger picture, it seems.

I second what GA said we do often miss the big picture. Like WWII we always think of the jews but many other minorites were victims as well.

Also i apologize for my ignorance i now know where the great Malaysia is.
