I am trying to expand the map selection when my friend and I play. How do I download the maps properly so they'll show up in the selection when I create a game on multiplayer?

You mean the place you select maps?

Make sure they are going to the right directory.
eg:

C:\Program Files\games\Starcraft\maps

you may not have games as a directory. Make sure you have put the maps in the 'maps' directory in the StarCraft folder.
