View Full Version : starcraft: ballooned expectations for an RTS

does pretty much everyone expect something similar to Starcraft:BW but with revamped graphics, a new engine, storyline, etc.?
i mean, it just seems really predictable and frankly, boring. its not like there aren't already so many RTS out there that duplicate everything the original Starcraft had to offer and improved upon it.
really, if Blizzard or whoever, churns out another SC:BW with a facelift, i'd be a tad disappointed in the ideas department even with 3-D graphics. WC:3 has already done what SC:2 hopes to accomplish.

Best troll evar.
I think I'm speaking for most of the sc players here when I say we don't want a completely new and unrecognizable game. Some people, me including, would be completely satisfied with another 2-D expansion to starcraft.
I think for sc2 to keep the hardcore gamers pleased, it would have to remain true to its roots. A new graphics engine, maybe a few fundamental changes, and new units etc. If people want something totally different then they can play something totally different, like WC3 or Diablo.
Well many people are counting on Blizzard to come up with starcraft 2 in the hopes that it would make heads blow up and that's exactly one of the reasons why blizz is taking it's time and i think that SC2 would incorporate some breakthrough ideas in RTS .

well i think you're in a small minority. most people would prefer an extended expansion pack to starcraft, as far as i can tell. starcraft is perfect. major changes would have to be ridiculously amazing work from blizzard to better sc:bw. ofc everyone's gonna buy it anyway, and truly, only time will tell. hopefully not too much time ;p

Personally, I don't care if SC2 is released. Yeah, it'd be great and all, but I'm fine with Brood War, and nobody (and I mean nobody) has ever played every map or mod. It just can't be done. Besides, I can't run any games made after 2003-ish. Kinda sucks, but...I'm fine with SC and BW.

What id like to see in SC 2 would be 1 new race, but not more then this. New units and such.
I would love an expansion to BW though with some new units, some changes, some new titlesets.
But whatever happens people are going to expect so much from SC2.

Hi all. First about some that said the majority would like SC 2 to be as similar with SC as it can be. I strongly disagree! Mauby on this forum yes, although that is hard statement, taken that not many people are active on this forum board! I believe the majority wants to see starcraft 2 in 3D and furthermore wants to see some new ideas being introduced.
Mauby some of you like SC too much that you don't even want SC2. These are not the people Blizzard will target anyway although i'm sure they will buy the sequel.
From a developer perspective and from majority of the community perspective Starcraft 2 needs to keep the original gameplay but that doesent mean not to introduce new ideas and concepts to SC2.
Only from a developer perspective making SC2 as similar as it's original will have negative effect not only on the game but the company itself:
1.There will be media statements that Blizzard is loosing it's creative feeling
2. A lot of mixed reactions by media and community which is always bad for game sales!
3.Blizzard ways aren't to just make repetitive games and sequels and Blizzard are known and established as the worlds leading game development studio that sets the standards when it releases a new game for years to come in it's genre!
So to the point the thing is to make a perfect balance between introducing new stuff and keeping to the roots of a game, which i'm sure once again we'll see a ground-braking standard seting RTS game with the name of SC2!

Blizzard ways aren't to just make repetitive games and sequels
and yet they did that with WC3, they stole SC's basic plot...
But I reckon that they would want to rope in not only the hardened SC gamers (who will grab the game anyway), but to rope in other gamers/people as well. Pretty simple math really...
really though if i had enough money for 1 and SC2 and D3 were on the shelf id get D3 LOLZ.
I dont think SC2 will be as good as the fist one and the expansion, it will prolly turn into a WC4 in space...

Its just Warcraft in Space!
thats what THEY said about Starcraft 1!

not true. there were no "godly" RTS games back in the 1990s. Starcraft, C&C and Total Annihilation set the bar. Warcraft was just a precursor for Blizzard, another experimental game launching pad imo.
and for SC:2... i'll have graduated college and prob be close to graduation from grad school before this game ever becomes even a drawing board concept.
imo, blizzard is just going to ride SC:2 on the coat-tails of how godly SC:BW was and just give blizzards usual expert treatment to SC:2 without putting in that much "fresh" effort.

What I would like to see happen is a MAJOR addition to broodwar AND maybe an option to play the orginal and Broodwar.
By a major addition i mean a massive amount of more units, buildings, many more upgrades for infantry units, and maybe 1-3 new races. Introducing the Xel'naga seems highly likely as Duran seems to be a member of that race (for those of us who have played the bonus mission).
I do not think that BW should be forgotton about. It is an awesome RTS that set a standard for games. I would love to see new patches and what not to keep the expansion going.
Somethings I would NOT like to see:
Many buildable heros as in WC3
A poor RPG of Starcraft
A over-commercialized MMORPG such as Universe of Starcraft (AKA WOW)
Overpowered units (AKA Scouts, Siege Tanks)

heh, one thing I hate about BW is the zerg lurker... GAR!
but anyways, what units/buildings/upgrades could the add in keeping with the balance act?

i think its taken for granted that anything related to WoW or any WC:3 type stuff will not be showing up SC 2. i mean, cmon!
in reality, we are going to settle for a remake of SC:BW in terms of straight up gangsta RTS. so when im old and hittin close to 30, ill be looking for this on the shelves!
