This is a thread to match existing songs with the various races of 40k.

Space Marines
Black Sabbath- Iron Man
Megadeth- Into the Lungs of Hell
Metallica- To Live is to Die

All these songs are slow and heavy, like the marines. Iron Man is, well, men in iron, which perfectly describes the marines' suits. Into the Lungs of Hell describes the conditions that the marines fight in. And To Live is to Die is their view on life.

Imperial Guard
Metallica- Disposable Heroes
Metallica- One
Rammstein- Benzin

The first two songs are about soldiers dying, and if there's one thing the IG excel at, it's dying in battle. Benzin is just a heavy song that describes their methods of fighting (Chemical warfare).

Necrons
Metallica- Harvester of Sorrows
Megadeth- Symphony of Destruction
AC/DC- Back in Black

Songs that emphasize destruction and sorrow (the Ctan). Back in Black is a reference to their return after millions of years.

Chaos
Iron Maiden- The Number of the Beast
Slayer- Raining Blood
Metallica- Call of Ktulu
Avenged Sevenfold- Beast and the Harlot

Songs with evil, demonic sources. Raining Blood is a perfect song for the soldiers of Khorne.

Orks
Pantera- Mouth for War
Ozzy Osbourne- Bark at the Moon
AC/DC- I'm TNT

Wild, primal songs.

Eldar
Led Zeppelin- Kashmir
Kittie- Brackish
System of a Down- Chop Suey!
Rammstein- Mein Herz Brennt

Oh let the sun beat down upon my face, stars to fill my dream
I am a traveler of both time and space, to be where I have been
To sit with elders of the gentle race, this world has seldom seen
They talk of days for which they sit and wait and all will be revealed

Brackish is for all the female Eldar warriors (Banshees, Farseers, etc.), and Chop Suey! and Mein Herz Brennt are both mournful songs.

Dark Eldar
Pantera- Cowboys from Hell
Rage Against the Machine- Killing in the Name

Both of these songs are rebellious and destructive in theme, just like the Dark Eldar.

Tau
Rammstein- Feuer Frei
Rage Against the Machine- Calm Like a Bomb
Lamb of God- Laid to Rest

Feuer Frei (Fire Fight) describes the Tau's strategy of combat. So does Calm Like a Bomb. Laid to Rest is just a kickass song.

Tyranids
Rob Zombie- Superbeast
Megadeth- Hanger 18

Superbeast for the Carnifex, and Hanger 18 is another kickass song.

Of the top of my head, some Muse songs:

Supermassive Black Hole-Dark Eldar (Maybe Slaneshi Chaos): Quite dark with something of a BDSM theme running through it ("Oooh baby can you here me suffer...here me moan" speaks for itself). Ideal for the Dark Eldar.

Stockholm Syndrome-Space Marines: Powerful song with lots of heavy crashing bits. Lyrics suit the Marines, defiant in the face of something that is hopeless.

Soldier's Poem - Imperial Guard: About soldiers dying alot. Need I say more?

Take a Bow - Inquisition: "Burn, you will burn, you will burn in hell, yeah you'll burn." Need I say more?
"Burn in hell for your sins..."

And some other bands:

Kasabian - Empire - Eldar: The song seems to be about how modern society is degenerating somewhat. This mix with the orchestral music and modern synth sounds seems to suit the Eldar quite well.

Switchfoot - Meant to Live - Imperial Guard: Ok, so it's a song by Switchfoot, but the lyrics go.

Prepare for Battle - Frank Klepacki (Command and Conquer) - Imperial Guard: Slow build up to a massive and rather noisy climax. AKA, the rush to Tier 4 in DoW for the IG :P

Foo Fighters - One By One and Free Me - Chaos (Khorne): Oh, just go and listen to them :P. Very agressive, very noisy. Good for Khorne.

Slipknot - The Heretic Anthem - Chaos: I just felt like typing it.

System of a Down - U-Fig - Tyranids: "Eat em' Eat em' Eat em' Eat em'
Eat em' Eat em' Eat em' Eat em'"

There may be more later.

Jedi, any reason why you've picked the songs you did? At the moment it seems like a fairly random list, especially since I'm not familiar with all the songs on it.

You know, when I think 40k, the last thing that comes into my head is Muse.

Yeah, I should have posted reasons. However, I have class soon. After class, I will edit my post to include reasons.

A lot of the songs I picked have lyrics that mirror the army (for example, the two Metallica songs that I chose for the IG are about soldiers dying, which the IG, if nothing else, excel at), or some are just incredibly badass (Hanger 18 has little to do with the Tyranids, other than it's about aliens, but the song is incredibly fast and has tremendous energy).

But yeah, I'll post a more substantial list after class.

Cool.

Ah, one I remember is a suggestion I recieve on Relic Forums (I was planning a 7 way AMV) for Necrons:

Symphony of the Planets: Mars. Apparantly it has a slow build up, lots of deep and booming drums. Plus, the fluff link is too tantalising.

The Muse songs I picked out aren't singles they've released, but a lot of their songs, particularly the new ones, are great for subtle, sinister tones that marry quite well with 40 K.

If you want an unexpected one, I hade 'Everyday I Love You Less and Less' pegged for the Orks. I though gazillions of Orks waving choppas to that song would be hilarious.

Warhammer in general/Space Marines:
"Warriors of the world" by Man'o'war

Eldar/Imp Guard:
Requim for a Dream. (I think that Eldar are classical)

I think the song "Bubbles" by System of a Down does quite well to describe the Imperial Guard. "War Pigs" by Black Sabbath, too. "Thunder Horse" by Dethklok has an epic, heavy sound to it that screams Space Marine to me. I'll think of more, just you wait.

That's weird. Whenever I think of 40k all I can think of is classical and Rammstein :P

"Scum of the Earth" by Rob Zombie makes me think of Necrons for some reason.

"Tenth Man Down" by Nightwish sounds like a Space Marine song to me.

"The Becoming" by Nine Inch Nails also sounds like a Space Marine song to me as it makes me think of the process of turning an ordinary human into a Marine.

"Ruiner", also by Nine Inch Nails sounds like a Tyranid song to me.

"Young Men Dead" by the Black Angels reminds me of the Imperial Guard.

"Fire" makes me think of Tau in that it just suddenly bursts out from nowhere without warning.

"Mechanix" by Megadeth screams Adeptus Mechanicus.
