View Full Version : Have a serious jacked up problem with IE and Win XP

I'm having a frustrating problem with IE on my Win XP machine. I nuked my computer the other day, and decided to split it into 3 user accounts. One for my work, one for my web dev, and one for useless, personal stuff (like warboards)...
...
Anyways, the internet works fine with the "Work" user account in Windows XP, but I have a problem in the other 2 ID's.
It's a problem with IE. When i go to Google for example, the search doesn't work. It just stalls there. When I type in something, and hit enter, it doesn't load, or move at all.
I've noticed this for a lot of other form based things, like eBay, Yahoo search, etc.
Every time I need to do a simple Google search, I have to switch identities. It's very frustrating.
I've asked this question on Experts-Exchange.com, but they haven't been able to help.
I'm beginning to see a problem the more i use the corrupted Windows XP accounts. I'm seeing errors like, "Cannot redirect you to this page," or, "Your browser settings prevent you from automatically being redirected to a new URL"
If anyone can help me out with this, I would greatly appreciate it.
Also, here is the stuff that I've tried.
1.) Reinstall IE. No Avail
2.) Reinstall XP - Not a complete reinstall, but do a full reinstall (Meaning, replace all System Files, etc.
3.) Run the sfc /scannow command.
4.) Check my IE settings in Tools > Settings
5.) Check proxy stuff.

Have you tried, perhaps, just using one account and dividing it into 3 separate folders? That way you would not have to switch between accounts. Can you provide a reason not to?
Another thing would be a system restore to before these things were happening.
Also try this. The next time it slows down on the web, go control + alt+ delete. Click on the processes tab and then click CPU so that the highest numbers go to the top. Post the 5 top names there, and we can go from there. (Although Edgewise will be more help with that).

Yeah for problems with IE... Have you checked the settings on the Security and Privacy tabs of IE's Internet Options menu? If they're set high enough, it prevents web-pages from giving re-directs, which is what most pages do when you submit a query.

I run a home-based business thing, and it's a lot more efficient when you have everything customized for work.

It doesn't slow down, and this isn't a CPU usage problem... or so I think.

Privacy settings are fine. I even changed it to "Low" just to see if it would affect my computer. It didn't work.
I'm still open to suggestions? I'm thinking about just nuking this thing again, and starting from scratch.
Alrighty, thanks for your help.

you can try to do the following things:
1. move all your necesary files to another partition (if u have) or copy on blanks
2. try this command: format c: and then reinstall everything from the beginnig and for sure u will have no ploblems :)

Do all the accounts have the same admin privs?
Dont format. Wtf kinda bullshit suggestion is that?
I would suggest switching back to 1 account.
That or check your internet settings on the other accounts... Make sure that proxies arent being used.
Or, my favorite suggestion from Exedore is this: Use Mozilla.
IE seems to like to error and stuff...
Anyways another thing is have you run AV software, Spybot, Adaware and have Spyware BLaster going? It might be worth it to scan with the AV software...and then update and rune Spybot and Adaware.
I would really just suggest switching back to one account. There is no reason you really need 3 different ones... I mean come on. Just use folders to seperate out the folders, and if you really want to seperate out "web browsing" to just use IE for work related stuff (less likely to hit a gaming site that tries to hijack IE if your doing something work related) and then use Mozilla (Fire fox) for at play/liesure and web dev stuff.
Splitting up accounts is more trouble then its worth IMO, and doesnt really help you stay organized...
Anyways I dont understand what the problem is, it sounds like IE is trying to run through a proxy or something and hitting a snag. Just try a second browser on the offending accounts and see if it happens there as well.

PS: Exedore should be happy to know I have switched browsers to Firefox... hehe

Thanks for the suggestions. I actually got Mozilla a while back, and it seems to be working fine.
(I'm using it right now).
I didn't reformat. Yes, all the accounts have admin privs.
I work from home, and I'm running my own business. I have a shitload of stuff on each account, and it helps you stay organized. I mean, Credit Card charging software, along with other stuff is used frequently in one account, while Jedi Knight: Outcast is used frequently in the other one (I just got that game :P)
Anyways, I'm thinking about getting a new harddrive, and in the long run, I'll probably end up formating the h/d
Thanks for all your help.
When you do go to get a new HD and stuff, try to do a clean install of everything you have (Back up your stuff onto CDs first... no matter what you do. Especially if you run a home business!) and setup each account right off the bat... Dont do it half way into a year of using your computer :p
And yeah. I am loving Mozilla, I just got sick of not being able to have Tabbed Browsing (its so useful...)

well sorry for my sugestion, but i didn't think at other posibilities then.. KupaNeo had a good idea, but mozilla isn't the best browser : i would prefer Opera Browser 7.5. it has everything itegrated :)
in my country (Moldova) mozilla is not such good for our Inet connections, everybody has problems with mozilla..

When you reformat make partitions! It never hurts (for average computer users)...and can be useful down the road...
No offense, but Mozzilla is one of the best browsers I have ever used (if you have problems, use Netscape)
Opera is fine and all, but they annoy me.
And besides, I get tabbed browsing, blocked popups, security, etc... from Mozilla... Kickass :P

My god, so old! :D
Anyways, I still had the problem... until the service pack for Windows came out, and IE got a few enhancements.
But, I used FireFox and continue to use it to this day. Tabbed browsing really comes in handy. :)
Omg NECROMANCY
If your having problems with IE, Run Spybot and Adaware SE and see if it can clean up anything. IE can be hijacked in many different ways.
