Well it depends on the effect you want, actually.

You can have stuff like turning on/off vision, cloaking/uncloaking units (or buildings), powering on/unpowering protoss buildings, ordering to do stuff (move, patrol, attack, build, gather etc.), teleport (moving around, not like orders but more like instant moving, similar to recall), creating/removing/killing units, pausing/unpausing the game, sending transmissions etc.

In a simple sentence, about 80% (if not all) triggers are used to make small map movies. As for what each trigger does, the simple explanation is in the help file. We can help you with what is not covered there, but I think I can speak for most here that we don't enjoy answering things already explained in ReadMes/FAQs or in other posts :)

Also, most of the triggers are self explanatory.
Triggers are the result of 2 common formulas:
1. cause/condition -> event/action
2. action -> reaction

Each of them happen depending on scenario. In case of #1 it's pretty much all about switches and death counters (death counters are a mapmaker's trick to do a sort of math, like waiting, similar to the wait trigger, but more precise, or an alternative to switches or to calculate stuff). Case #2 is pretty much everything else. This is the simplest way I can explain how triggers work :)

4046, wanna learn how to make cinematics in maps? Extract the campaign maps from the game *.mpq's and take a look at'em like many of us did (read, mostly the triggering part). ;)
The rest, imo, 'Nomad already got covered. *Pats on it's back*

Um, where are these MPQ's, in my SC Folder? and how would you run an MPQ in X-tra Editor or any other editor?
