What would have happened if the Cold War exploded into open conflict between Nato and the Warsaw Pact? Well, that is something I hope we can explore in a role play. Before I really start in on it and have it turn sour five posts in, I want to know if anyone is remotely interested in such a role play.

yes, perhaps that could be fun. but tanis please put lots of effort into it and explanations. maybe we could all be from different sides or something. who knows but i guess you get me. <shrug>

I was planning on letting players choose where they are from and who they fight for...also any service will be playable. Here is a sort of overview, with informational posts to follow.

The Anglo-Soviet War

It is 1978 and the United States is at war with Communism all across the world. What lead up to the Anglo-Soviet War is a collection of confrontations that began just after the Second World War. Soviet pilots based out of China flew MiG-15 and MiG-17 high speed interceptors against the American forces in the Korean War, shooting down many US aircraft and destroying ground operations. The Soviet Army supplied the North Korean forces with thousands of firearms, tanks, and supplied to keep up their war effort. Despite the American aid, the communist forces gained a foot hold in South Korea and pushed the US Army and Marine Corps back until they were forced to retreat by boat, leaving the rest of the country under the control of the North Korean puppet government, whose strings are held by the Soviet Union. American troops in the closing weeks were stunned to see they fought soldiers of the Red Army. the USSR denied this, but the Americans knew it was true. When the Americans began their operations to protect the South Vietnamese from encroaching Vietcong and the NVA in 1965. By 1970, the USSR had also committed massive forces into Vietnam. Again, the USA was pushed south, but the American military managed to hold the NVA, Soviets, and Vietcong from taking Saigon. In February 1976, a formal cease fire was signed, but thousands of military troops on both sides of the dividing line stand ready at a moment's notice to start the blood bath again. On September 6th 1976, a Soviet MiG-25 pilot named Viktor Belenko attempted to defect to Japan with Soviet MiGs in hot pursuit. Just before reaching a base, the three MiG-21 fighters shot down Viktor Belenko over Japanese air space. The Japanese Air Force responded by launching F-14 Tomcats, and an aerial engagement took place with two of the MiGs and one F-14 shot down over the Sea of Japan. The USSR was outraged at the Japanese taking part in what the Soviets called an 'Internal matter'. By late 1977, the USSR and People's Republic of China launched a full on invasion of Japan, landing troops on the home islands by January 1978. Within eight months most of Japan was under communist control. In October of the same year, the Soviet ground forces advanced on the Western European nations, making easy progress. Two days after the start of the advance, the USA declared war, along with the rest of NATO, on the nations of the Warsaw Pact. American troops have landed in France, moving forward to meet the Communist advance. So far, Nuclear weapons have not been used, but in this war anything is possible.

Of course there will be things not listed, just run it by me and I'll add it in. Also, if you want to be a nation other than the US, just fit the gear for your nation.

The American Military Forces

The United States Army and Marine Corps.
The United States Army has fallen out of favor with most young people after the fiasco of the Vietnam War. Because of this lack of interest, most men serving in the United States Army are currently under conscription for a service of not less than two years, and a period of three years thereafter to be served in the National Guard. Depleted after the huge attrition rate and the above mentioned lack of enlistees, the Army was a shell of its former glory until just recently. With the taking of Japan and the invasion of Europe by Communist forces, men are again returning to the enlisting stations. Companies are being brought back to full strength, and the muscle of America is returning. The typical infantryman in the Army is eighteen to twenty five years of age, with a reasonable number of men having seen a lot of action in Vietnam. They are equipped with the M-16A1 5.56mm Assault Rifle, which can fire armor piercing or hollow point rounds from a fifteen or thirty round magazine. It is a far cry from the frail original, with a stronger frame and a much smaller failure rate. The M61 is the standard fragmentation grenade, with one or two issued. Colt .45 Side arms are rare among the enlisted or conscripted, mostly carried by officers and rear duty men. The standard Howitzer for the artillery batteries is the 105mm M102, which is light enough to be para dropped. Mortars are Light 60mm or Medium 81mm with the lighter of the two more common. The Marine Corps operates with similar materials, but also flies Phantom attack craft and Huey helicopters, which can be modified to carry rockets and gun pods. The most common and advanced battle tank used by the United States is the M60 Patton Tank, utilizing a 105mm gun, multiple machine guns, and a crew of four.

The United States Air Force
The Air Force suffered from a major flaw during the Vietnam War. Common thinking at the time was that missiles and nuclear ordnance were of the future, and the standard attack jet carried no internal gun in case the missiles failed to hit their targets, which they often did. About mid way through, new F-4E Phantom II arrived with an internal 20mm rotary cannon. (( This is a common jet for the Navy aviators)). Typically carrying four heat-seeking Sidewinders and four-radar guided Sparrow missiles, the field was leveled and was part of what caused the cease fire to be signed. Acting in the strike role they could carry a variety of bomb loads, rockets, and air to ground missiles. Operating with a crew of two, the biggest issue with the Phantom II is limited visibility. The chief strike aircraft is the F-105D Thunder-chief, which is designed to deliver nuclear weapons. The Thunder-chief operates carrying fuel tanks and five one thousand pound bombs or ten five hundred pound bombs. They are are crewed by one man, and are not built for dogfighting. However, a similar 20mm Rotary cannon is mounted on the Thunder-chief. The heavy bomber most operated by the Air Force is the B-52D. Capable of carrying a large number of conventional bombs and cruise missiles, the B-52 pounded North Vietnam into dust during Operation Rolling Thunder. It is crewed by six men, with five in the nose and one operating the rear turret which contains four .50 caliber machine guns. France and England have allowed the use of their airfields, as well as Thailand. America has bases in the Philippines from which B-52s can strike China and North Vietnam. Just coming into the field on the side of the NATO countries, the F-15 and F-16 are advanced air superiority fighters.

The United States Navy

The United States Navy is very strong, even after the Vietnam War. Most of her fleet is stationed in the Pacific where they launched their fighters against the Communists in Vietnam. Operating from the aircraft carriers are the F-4 Phantom II fighters also employed by the Air Force, as well as the F-14 Tomcat. The F-14 is the prime air superiority fighter for the Navy, using variable wing geometry and a deadly load out to swat Soviet craft from the skies. Utilizing a 20mm Rotary cannon and a variety of short range Sidewinders and Sparrows with the long range firepower of the Phoenix missile, the F-14 is a deadly foe. Super-carriers are the kings of the fleet, operating up to ninety aircraft and defended by three 20mm Rotary cannon for shooting down missiles and SAM turrets. Defending the Super-carriers are the Spruance class destroyers. These deadly craft are armed with two quick firing dual purpose 127mm gun turrets, two defensive 20mm Rotary cannon, an eight cell ASROC turret, a SAM turret and two anti-warship Harpoon launchers. Submarines of the Navy are separated into two classes, Attack Submarines or Ballistic Missile submarines. The Los Angeles is the standard Attack Submarine Class, utilizing four torpedo tubes that can launch torpedoes or even Tomahawk Cruise Missiles. The Benjamin Franklin Class Ballistic Missile submarine carries vertical launch tubes that carry nuclear missiles or conventional cruise missiles.

Again, there are other things than what is listed here. China generally uses the same equipment.

The USSR Military Forces

The Soviet Red Army

The sheer size of the Soviet Union and its chief ally the People Republic of China allow them to call up huge numbers of reasonably well equipped and trained conscripts to throw against the NATO forces. Men are plentiful, and more and more join the ranks of the Soviet military everyday to fight against the Capitalist forces. The typical Soviet soldier is eighteen years old and used to harsh winters. Standard issue of the day for new troops is the Auvtomat Kalashnikov Model 74, more commonly known as the AK-74. It fires 5.45mm ammunition similar to the 5.56mm used by the American built M-16. It can optionally mount a scope for medium ranged sharp shooting. most of the older troops are still carrying the old yet reliable AK-47 assault rifle, which uses a beefier 7.62mm round. Both us thirty round magazines and are extremely robust and rugged. Officers carry the 9mm Makarov pistol. Artillery is relatively rare, since they are on the move and have so far needed little heavy firepower. Rocket Propelled Grenades are the typical anti-vehicle weapon, with the 107mm Recoilless Rifle providing a little more hitting power. The standard transport and gunship is the Mil Mi-24 Hind, which carries a 12.7mm Gun turret on the nose and a variety of missiles and rockets on the wings. The T-64 and T-72 Tanks form the bulk of Russian armor, each manned by three men and using a 125mm rifled cannon.

The Soviet Air Corps and PVO Strany

The Soviet Air Corps contains extremely high numbers of high speed fighter craft, supplied from the veteran design companies Tupolev, Mikoyan-Gurevich, and Sukhoi. One of the most common and most effective is the MiG-21, known to NATO pilots as the 'Fishbed'. This is a supersonic, delta winged craft crewed by a single man. It has an integral, double barrled 23mm cannon under the fuselage, along with four pylons on the wings for Aphid heat seeking short range missiles and Anab medium range radar guided missile. Both are deadly to NATO craft. The most common bomber for the Soviet Air Corps is the Tupolev TU-95 known to NATO as the Bear. Carrying a bomb load comparable to the B-52, the Bear is capable of carrying a lot of conventional munitions and nuclear ordnance. The PVO Strany is the Soviet Anti-Air Defence force, much like the American National Guard. It operates approximately thirteen hundred interceptor aircraft, from older MiG-17s to the ultra high speed MiG-25 interceptor. The PVO and the Air Corps spearheaded the advance, clearing the road for the Soviet Red Army. Acting in the ground support role is the superd MiG-27 Flogger, using variable wing geometry and a vicious weapon loadout.

The Soviet Navy
The Soviet Navy is something of an anomaly, because at this time she uses no Aircraft Carriers unlike most NATO countries who have forsaken the Battleship for naval aviation. Stationed in the Baltic, the Soviet Navy uses the deadly Alfa Class Attack submarine, which fires torpedoes and cruise missiles from its six torpedo tubes. A variety of nuclear missile submarines are also based in the Baltic.(( Haven't really found much out about the Soviet Navy ))

Yeah, I might jump in on this one. I mean, it IS my duty and all. If you want any detailed information for the Marine Corps, let me know. I'll fill your mind until it explodes. Lol. Seriously though, just pm me if you want some info about the Marines. Also, when can we look forward to seeing a char sheet for this? I'll be watching.

You want a character sheet? I am happy to oblige you and the othe seven prospective members. Like I said before, not all of the choices were put up in the posts above. Just PM with something you want and I'll find out what was avaliable at the time. I hope you guys will introduce your chars through posts, so the char sheet is kind of vague. Put in anything you want though. Also, there are two starting points. Players can choose to begin the war on the West German/East German Border, or they can start in the war torn shell of Saigon in what is left of South Vietnam. Also, just curious...but who voted no? Lol

Name: Brig. Gen. Hawk, James Logan
Faction: United States
Age: 46
Height: 6' 2"
Military Unit: United States Marine Corps
Equipment: Standard issue Colt .45, M16-A1 (when needed), and any other gear as needed
Short Biography: James Hawk was born in 1932. He wanted nothing more than to fight during the second world war, but was not old enough to join the military until after the war. As soon as he turned 18, he was accepted into Annapolis to train to become an officer. Originally he had planned to join the Navy, the dream of commanding his own vessel always following him as a child. However, when he was half way through with his schooling, he had decided against the Navy, choosing rather to join the Marines. When he finally graduated, he did so at the top of class, proving that he would be the perfect officer for any task given to him. He was then assigned to Second Batallion Fifth Marines stationed in Camp Pendleton, California. Placed as a platoon commander, 1st Lt. Hawk was quickly deployed to the confrontation errupting in Vietnam. From there his promotions came quick, his medals holding testament to his actions in combat. He was awarded with both a Silver Star and Bronze Star for "actions above and beyond the call of duty in combat," as well as several Navy Commendation Medals (NavComm) and two seperate Navy Achievement Medals (NAM's). 7 months ago he had managed to claw his way up to the upper echelons of the officer ranks, acheiving the rank of Brigader General and taking command of the Marine Forces stationed in Saigon, the last strong hold of the non-communist forces in Vietnam.

Name: Oberstleutnant Hans 'Witwenmacher' Reichtburg
Faction: NATO, West Germany
Age: Thirty six
Height: Five feet, eight inches
Military Unit: West German Luftwaffe, Commandant of the Regensburg Luftwaffe training camp.
Equipment: German made P-4 (Post-war P-38), survival pack, German Oberstleutnant Uniform and Luftwaffe flight suit. Customized AV-8A Harrier Jump Jet

Short Biography: Hans was born in the current West German capital city of Bonn, in 1942 to the Reichburg family. His father, Kurt Reichburg, flew Focke-Wulfe Fw-190 fighter aircraft in World War II against the American air force. He was killed in action over Berlin in 1945, to the dismay of his wife, Gretel. From the time he was five till now, he had always had a fascination with flying. One might say it was even bred into his blood. When he was eighteen, he paid his own way into the Luftwaffe Training Academy in Regensburg. His mother strongly opposed it. He was shown to have superior dogfighting skills early on. By 1975, he had achieved the rank of Oberstleutnant, or Lieutenant Colonel in the American Air Force, and was put in charge of training the next generations of fighter pilots in the very facility he was trained, Regensburg. His current trainees number twenty six, with twenty full combat redy pilots ready to fly at any moment. Aircraft in the airfield are the Dassauly/Dornier Alpha Jet, which in addition to being an excellent training craft makes for a good strike bomber, and the Amercian built F-104 Starfighter. With the actions taken by the Warsaw Pact, his base is one of the only ones protecting the South Eastern part of West Germany from the encroaching Communist craft. His personal aircraft is a modified F-4 Phatom II, one of many bought from America for use by the West German Luftwaffe. One was awarded to him by Hans' immediate CO, Oberst Ludwig von Stansen. The two attended flight school together and became good friends. Ludwig gave the Harrier to Hans when he attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. It has been painted in German colors and insignia, and though he has yet to see full action in this aircraft, many have fallen in training exercises to his skill.

Yay, I have an enemy! As for maps, here is one without labels, but it is a good indicator of who is fighting for what side. Blue is NATO, red is Warsaw Pact. Grey is neutral. The Black region is Yugoslavia, they ARE communist but not members of the Warsaw Pact.

Short Biography: Having grown up within a strict military family with a dominant history of family members having served in the Russian armed forces, it was only a matter of course for Andrei to pursue his own illustrious career within the Soviet Army. Narrowly avoiding tight situations from certain "purges" (and perhaps taking a careful measure in a few himself) allowed Andrei to become rapidly promoted through the ranks.
