I was just thinking, in World of WarCraft, a lot of the game is centered around groups of five. To me, that's inflexible. They said that teams with different numbers would work, but the optimal combination is five people. I don't think that's this is to the benefit of the player. I mean, we're likely to have differing amounts of people we want to go on the quests with.
What I was thinking, was maybe a system where, when you get the quest, they tell you how many players is optimal for the quest. If you don't like the number, you can find another quest. But the point is, not every single quest is suited for five people. It'd be nice to have some variation.
Also, it will be boring to play in a group constantly. To meet new people, wouldn't it be great if you went on solo quests? I'm not sure if they have those, but if they don't, they really should.
As an extension of the solo quest thing, I was thinking of an 'everyone' quest. Which is not really a quest, it's a competition. Like 'Find the rarest item in the land' and everyone goes out on their own to find a rare item.
I should probably go read up more info on World of WarCraft before I start coming up with ideas that are already in the game... this is such a cool game, I'm not kidding.

I think that the small group of 5 people is a generally good idea for quest-intensive MMORPGs. When it comes to something like just monster-killing, item hunting and levelling, greater numbers of people are viable, but quests are really a different story. Think of it in the sense of Baldur's Gate. You get a restriction of 6 people per group, so you don't lose certain people, certain perople don't fall behind, etc.
Certain quests are bound to be intricate, and will need the aid of each individual member to complete it. When you get groupings of 10-20 people together, you'd find it near impossible to get all of them organized. It would be sheer hell trying to get the quest finished if it was timed as well. There will always be the few people in a large group that would rather stand around and talk, than help out the quest.
Blizzard has also stated that these small groups will be able to team together to create multiple small groups (AKA A big group ;)). I'm 100% sure these groups will suit your needs when it comes to the various tasks that need a lot of people, like raids, levelling, chilling with a guild and unique item finding. Blizzard has taken all of this into account, and I'm sure their teaming system will not be a disappointment :D.
As for solo quests, Blizzard has stated numerous times that they want this game to be viable for all types of players. In other words, if you want to do some questing solo, you'll be able to, as there will be areas and quests suited to that. If you'd rather play in a team, you can do that too :D.
As far as the rare item competition goes, I'm sure that's already the individual goal of any WoW would-be gamer. I mean, who DOESN'T want to find that ultra rare item :P?
It is very likely, however, that Blizz will hold server-wide quests for everyone as well :D. The sky's the limit with these guys.

Heh, thanks. That basically cleared my mind up.
I didn't think about the whole organisation thing. You're right, 10-20 people would take forever to organise, and it would take the fun out of the game. 5 sounds pretty good. But I was hoping they'd have quests for 3 people and 2 people. As well as encouraging you to change your group every two weeks or something. Otherwise it'd get boring.
Server-wide quests would be the best things. Did you read that thing about how some items would be limited to only one per server??? This game has got me really hyped. I can't wait for it to come out. I just can't wait.
What's so amazing about the game, is it's a simulation of an entire world. An entire world. And they can do anything with that world. Just like you said, the sky's the limit. I'd really like to be a part of the whole thing.

Guwah, indeed it'll be great! I'm so psyched myself!
I'm not 100% sure what you mean about items being limited one per server. This is what I do know about the items in WoW:
* Like diablo 2, they will use a prefix, suffix name generator to generate item stats. This will be for simple magical items.
* No item is completely unique. In other words, even the SUPER rares, will be able to be found at another time. The chances of finding said item could be one in katrillion, but the possibility is there.
* Items will be allowed to be hotkeyed (I believe I saw a few screenies with items hotkeyed).
* There will be various ways to get the 'best rare' at various different levels. In other words, at level 10 the best item could be made through crafting, but at level 15, the best item could be found from a rare encounter.

I'd rather win the lottery rather than find a super rare item in World of WarCraft. I was just thinking that it would be pretty dumb to reward people with super rare items. I mean, if it's that rare, just giving them more stuff is unfair. But I think it would be nice to tell everyone in the server who's very special. Maybe.
About your points, that's nice and informative. I really like the idea of getting the 'best rare' in different ways. It's the variation of the world that makes the experience great. I hope they change the rules on how to get the best rare every month or so. Or maybe even make the way of getting the best rare different for different people/races/classes. Since the game is going to have a long two year storyline, change is needed to keep people interested.
I've never played Diablo 2, and my WarCraft 3 experience is very limited. If I had money, I would buy those two games right now just to get a better perspective on World of WarCraft. It seems that Diablo 2 is very similar to World of WarCraft. Just less players.
