I hope I'm not going to get sued for doing this, but here we go.
I got the pre-release version of the new Windows. My father works at HP/Compaq, and he got an early version. It's codenamed "Longhorn". It's pretty sweet. It's got some awesome features, such as animated buttons and a completely new desktop. It also runs WAYYYYY faster than any other windows. It booted up on my old 700Mhz Compaq in about 20 seconds.
I've got some screen-shots. I can assure you that these are not edited in any way. It's not just a skin, either.

Seriously?...you're kidding me right?
I was of the opinion companies couldn't buy pre-released software normally....
and Longhorn seems like an very odd name....
wierd....
hmmm...I'm tempted to believe this based on your word....
EDIT: ok you win...I wonder what microsoft had in mind with Longhorn as a name...

Longhorn was announced quite a while ago, I could dig up the link if you would like.
Companies are allowed to give things like this to their employees, pretty much to make them happy and keep them working.

I am entirely not kidding.

I'm guessing Compaq needs it to develop software, which explains why my father got it.
and Longhorn seems like an very odd name....
I agree, but I didn't name it...
wierd....

Thank you for your trust, I can see why you might doubt me. I can assure you that it's real.
Another funny thing is that you can't change the time. The option's not in there yet. :-/

I was of the opinion companies couldn't buy pre-released software normally....They need it so they can create software for it and test the software.

Yeah, I heard 2006 also. :)
Longhorn is and has been available for download for MSDN Universal members for a while. You're actually using a relatively old build (4051) which premiered at Microsoft PDC 2003 in October. Watch out for the sidebar memory leak. :) Since then there have been two publicly released builds (4053 and 4074). Microsoft recently showed off a bunch of new features in Avalon (the presentation layer) at WinHEC two weeks back. Slated to go full beta in 2005 and hopefully released in 2006, it should be a good product. :) The theme you're using now (Slate) is a temporary theme and will be replaced before release. I've heard that for security reasons though, Microsoft won't include their new Aero (the 3D rendered GUI) code until closer to beta.

Hehe, guess I'm behind the times then. ;)

Even if it is a beta, a relatively old beta at that, me like. My hope is to use the cash I make from my undergrad graduation open house to purchase a new laptop running longhorn to take to law school with me. That'd be sweet.

Quick question...is it 64-bit collaborative...for lack of a better term....will it utilize a 64-bit processor?

They have a version of Longhorn in development that will utilize a 64-bit processor. But it's separate from the 32-bit one everybody else is going to use.

Actually, most desktop processors will be 64-bit by the time Longhorn is released. AMD already markets one, and Intel will probably have one out by then. They are developing the 32 bit version for the outdated 32-bit procs.

And don't forget the G5. It's 64-bit, but OS X has yet to take advantage of that, as do most apps.

I think it is safe to say that this thread is dead. Besides, it isn't even about Macs.

I never said it was. I was just saying that the G5 is a 64-bit processor.

winows longhorn is made for the biggest lammes all over the world. it has a pretty look but I would prefer linux or freeBSD because it has a pretty look too and it's complicated..

I guess you don't understand the concept of a dead thread, either.
Also, could you please enlighten me on the meaning of "lammes?"
None of the aforementioned operating systems (FreeBSD and Linux) have a "look". I think you're referring to the applications that run under the OS like X, Gnome, KDE, Enlightenment, etc. FreeBSD and Linux by themselves look the same as DOS. I don't know how you can say that an operating system being more complicated is better. An operating system being more secure or having more features is better, but being complicated is not a bragging right.

That's not true, Tim. For example, since my car has so many buttons and switches that it requires my complete and undivided attention while I'm driving, it is better.

I'd have to agree with TimP. Something that is too complicated is a big drag. That is one of the reasons I like Win98 more than WinXP. It's just easier.
TranquilNightElf

I'd disagree..i find WinXP more stable and easier to control vvarious things than 98...although complexity i guess is relative
I like Win2k... Screw XP, and I was a 98SE fanboy for awhile but had to move up (98SE doesnt do well with large amounts of ram, lol)
And yeah... this thread was kinda revived. Try not to revive threads that are a month older... I mean unless you intend to like post a paragraph or something on the topic ;/
