View Full Version : Project Releases?

Was wondering how everyone feels about releasing projects...

That is, if and when you finish a project, how would you like it released?

Should we create a whole new Website based on the group here (and subsequently a new name) or should we use the BlizzSCUM site to release projects here as well?

Or should we go a whole 'nother route and either ask for a Forum here (IE: Project Release) where the creator/creators will post thier final works / other info about the project?

Dont know if that came out right ^^;;

Meh... Anyways if anyone has any questions regarding webhosting for this kinda stuff let me know. Thought about offering space to people who would like to setup thier own Project site or something O.o

Oh and I would like to toss in my name to help test out maps, if nothing else -- I used to be really into Map Editing and stuff, but since I dont have my computer... Cant do much ;(

ADD: Also, I think it would be good to keep maps on a different server from the forums, if for nothing else then simple backup -- incase attachments ever get lost, or pruned, etc...

Wow, Neo, you're too nice.

I think you can make this a sub-area of the BlizzSCUMS website, though you'll have to consult Rhino or DD.

I say you make a public area where everyone can go and download the maps. Then we upload it to an alternate server (starcraft.org I'd say) and have that as a mirror for it.

I was planning the release on StarCraft.org... but I would like the BlizzSCUMS website to be involved too. There's no point having a BlizzSCUMS website with nothing on it.

someone tell the guys over at BlizzForums to come over here... it's so lonely without poo_on_you or Drakain Zeil. Just as a little incentive, only the WarBoards.org BlizzSCUMS maps will be able to be posted on the front page. Because I'm so nice.

Some of them want to restart BlizzSCUMs... dont realize alot of people have moved.

UED77 is with both, and I am offering support for both...

Anyways whatever works :)

And of course Im nice ;D Heheh. I cant wait to get my moogles going :( I am outta wack on this opposite colored board O_O I setup the CMS the other day, and stupid me didnt realize I didnt give UED full access so he was prolly thinking "WTF IS THIS?!" heh.

I agree with Doom that we should keep the maps on StarCraft.org, and just directly link to the files, or at least use it as a mirror. That's what I've always done with my maps, and it's worked out great so far. But I don't think we'll have to worry about this too soon :).

Do you think we could have a "solo maps" page on the BlizzScums site? It can just go down by author, with links to their solo maps (no descriptions needed, really). It would at least allow us to get some content up there.

Im sure we could do that, I am still waiting for whatever is going to happen over at BF. I wish someone would decide.

I moved the site over to a CMS, so technically we could give authors thier own page to work on and a username/login and such for it ;P

But if BST/ORGers are willing it would be nice to get a section or map "publicity" on Starcraft.org. Although i would hate to see them just float into the huge map database... :(

Tens of thousands of people still play Starcraft UMS maps, (just take a look at how many people are logged in and playing on BNET when you enter)...

I myself have not found any quality and worthy website dedicated to reviewing and creating/releasing UMS maps. I am pretty sure if Starcraft.org would have a featured section for it, the community as a whole would have a goal to get their own UMS map up on the front page feature in UMS section. Get the word of mouth out, tell everyone you can and mention it. If the website provides a way for people to come and download oldies and especially new UMS maps, along with a great team (that we already have, BST, Doom, etc..) to feature them for downloading, it will really take off flying.

If you go to google right now and search for "starcraft UMS archive" or anything of that nature, you will find about 2-3 archives with over 15 maps on it. Old websites, with no updating, etc...

I think a place to go would be BlizzScums. If anyone would be willing, (I offer help) to help make that website into something worthwhile, it would be -the- place to go for UMS maps. New Releases, oldies archives, etc..

Personally I'd like to get more reviews of your guys customs work, might promote publicity for .org/WB setup.

Yeah, we have some qualified people around here who could probablyy do some of the reviewing. I know that I, myself, could review some UMS maps or something, and I bet Doom would be up for it, as well. There are also some talented customs guys here, so maybe you could look into that, as well.

How about whenever we release a few projects, put it in a big map pack. Have like... Every two or three months, we put all our new projects and updates in them, then release it on the org. That way, there are headlines of the maps, and also, you get a lot of maps with just one download. Lastly, BSTRhino can review them himself, and say how GOOD they are ;) ;)

That always works ^.^

I thought we would be releasing all of the competition entries in a big map pack at the end of each round?

excellent dunchy, I was hoping to get it into the map reviews section as well.

Ouch, Do well BST.

Are you dissing my Blizzscum SITE?!?!?!

Seriously though, all the work I was doing on it stopped, I cant really start backup until DZ or someone over at BF gets BS back on track or disbands it -- I dont think its fair to those over there who dont want to come here/dont care/dont know to start using the BS site for this unless they know about it.

And on top of that, I would much rather have *cough* the ORG host this stuff if everyone is gonna be promoting it -- pages i can do, but "tens of thousands" of UMS players downloading mappacks = ouch.

But at first I wouldnt mind, I really do like the funky site layout... ;D

IceFlare to the rescue..... me thinks.... I think myself I got more bandwidth than SC.Org... I think im not sure who can confirm?
i got 300GB thats right ... GB not MB

BSTRhino

Um, SC.org's bandwidth is unmetered. Since we host all these campaigns and people's maps, that's a really good thing. I don't think I would want to know what kind of bandwidth is really used up.

Man you're funny EdvardMunch.

Actually I don't mind when people revive threads. I remember trying to enforce the revivals policy in the StarCraft 2 forum a few hundred times at BF. There was never a good reason for it. It's only if you just do it for your post count.

Hm...I think that some of our more graphically-inclined users should help set-up a page for any and all projects we do, with hints and such.

Like, for Orbit Defense, we could have a little button of two rotating circles the interlock and...stuff, and the page could have a planet slowly rotating around(with teh ringz!) as the background, with a fancy logo for Starchitects.

Hmmm... yes, a spinning world would be nice. In GIF? I don't know... maybe? I can do a JPEG JavaScript animation if that's necessary.

And, who has enough graphic design knowledge to make a spinning world?

IceFlare
07-26-2004, 5:01 PM
Im not good with animation, I can make a sheen but not something that rotates... it took me over 100 frames to make a 3d screenshot rotate and look realistic.....
