From neowin.net.

Neowin has learned of shocking and potentially devastating news. It would appear that two packages are circulating on the internet, one being the source code to Windows 2000, and the other being the source code to Windows NT. At this time, it is hard to establish whether or not full code has leaked, and this will undoubtedly remain the situation until an attempt is made to compile them. Microsoft are currently unavailable for comment surrounding this leak so we have no official response from them at the time of writing.

This leak is a shock not only to Neowin, but to the wider IT industry. The ramifications of this leak are far reaching and devastating. This reporter does not wish to be sensationalist, but the number of industries and critical systems that are based around these technologies that could be damaged by new exploits found in this source code is something that doesn't bare thinking about.

Stop laughing like an idiot, AJ. ;)

Hahahaha, dumasses!

Oh wait, I run on 2k.

Fuck, I need a Mac.

Windows XP Professional. Ha!

Even so, I would've bought a Mac if they were either cheaper or I had more ash.

You don't like bees, do you? 'Cause you left one out of "dumbass". ;)

Microsoft is going to sue because their code will be leaked into Linux.
Let's hope it doesn't come to that.

BTW, MS has patented XML:

You can get to Neowin? I keep getting server busy nonsense, at least I now know why. This not good, if true :(

How does this matter at all? Win2k is ... err 4 years old, and the "Server" versions or whatever have to be a lil different dont they?

I would always run a server on linux anyways...

Well lots of people still run NT4 let alone 2000. In any case, I was able to fine torrents of the supposed source code, no idea if it’s true, but there’s ton of people downloading it

My Compaq is the only computer in the house with XP. The rest use 2000 for two reasons: 1) My dad's too cheap to purchase XP and, 2) he believes 2000 is a better, less bloated, more stable version. Oh yeah, he's a cheap bastard, too. ;)

We will see an explosion of virii? Oh wait... already happened.

Whats the point? The worst that could happen is getting Windows code into Linux or some such -- OMG HOW HORRIBLe >.> lol...

Linux doesnt need Windows' help at all.

Linux has been 3 steps ahead of Windows ever since it was made.

I'm using 2000 on my only computer and i honestly don't know what the harm is in having the source code leaked. I don't even know what a source code is :p

It's true. My roommate has part of it and was showing me, but it drove both of us crazy trying to make sense of it (and we're both 3rd year CompE majors)...

Some of the comments are quite amsuing though. One of them read similar to
GPF error: issue a gpf error and don't work about the buffer on the stack overflowing
Also, the "my<item>" (such as myDocuments) scheme is even in the source code. I recall my roommate mentioning a function called myHeapAlloc.

hmmm myHeapAlloc, I remember seeing that in a error. Then again, I see a lot of things in errors on Windows. =)

I dunno, I have bluescreened a shitload of times more on 2k than XP.

Obviously I am not saying it is perfect over XP, I am just saying when I use it/have used I have neved Bluescreened. Then again I have never Bluescreened 2k or XP so I dunno.

I just prefer Win2k -- its not as bloated, and it doesnt tend to eat memory as it sits there (leaving a computer on for a month without one reboot -- thats "usability" lol)

Ok guys, 2k and XP is about the same stupid thing, although I never ever used 2k I don’t trust any OS without msconfig ;) I came from windows 98 and I love XP, stupid 98 could not go 3 hours without a reboot:( As for the leak, eWeek has an article on who leaked it http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,4149,1526831,00.asp and its not the whole code anyway form what I hear it’s like 10% or so, so this will be no big threat in the end. Also I found a long thread about it at Slashdot for those who care to read such things http://slashdot.org/articles/04/02/13/165231.shtml?tid=109&tid=185&tid=187&tid=190&tid=201

It has been awhile since I had Win2k, but I do believe I had msconfig on it. Although I could be confusing it for TweakUI ... But I was pretty sure it had msconfig -- I use it alot actually so I cant imagine not having it ;)

Win2k and XP are not the same, I find Win2k more stable, and really more simple to use. Give me stablity and stuff over your stupid Candy looking WinXP ;P
