View Full Version : What Makes Your Race "Yours"?

Most people who play StartCraft hold a special sentiment for a certain race, and in some cases only that race. Units, play style, and even just look and feel all contribute to these feelings. So, my question is, if you have a favored race, how did you come to favor them, and why?

For me and Zerg it was simply love at first site. I was a youngster, 9 or 10, and I was at a friends house. He was playing StarCraft, and from the moment I saw the game I knew I would be playing it for years to come. Well, I was playing around on some of the Terran missions, and was enjoying myself, very much so.
I wasn’t doing too good however, I think he put me on a hard mission just so he could watch me lose :\ So I decided to try a different race, I chose zerg. From that day I have had a solid, unshakable relationship with the Zerg race. At first I was drawn to them on looks alone, like most relationships. After a few years of playing SC at different friends houses here and there I acquired my own copy of BW, this was around last February.
Once I delved deeper into the wonder that is StarCraft I fell in love with Zerg all over again, this time for their personality. For me Zerg is security, I feel safe and in control when I wield them, even if I’m getting my ass handed to me.
There are numerous reasons I favor them, rock solid economy, very versatile units, the fear their units induce on people; mainly the mighty lurker and pesky mutalisk. Zerg is truly only limited by ones own speed and aggression, I believe if used properly, they can not be beaten. However this could apply to any race.
That’s how I feel about my race, and I hope all of you hold the same respect for the race that you have chosen as your own.
I may sound foolish for presenting myself so seriously about a video game, but SC is no ordinary game. Its a continuous learning experience.

group i played with when i first started had 2t's 3z's 2p's so i pick t to play as. 3 months later after 1 of the many arguements we had 3t's (including me) 2z's and no tosses so i switched to toss it only seemed logical

Toss. I just thought they looked cool at first. I always thought they were the best race especially after Brood War due to The Dark Archon and High Templars. Their ability to warp in multiple building. I was only about 8 when we got this game from my dad's friend. I was fascinated with the Toss. I was good with the Toss but then we moved and I just started playing again this summer after 5-6 years.

I like Zerg AND protoss. :<

I like Zerg because of hydralisks, lurkers and guardians. They were just SO COOL! Plus their economy is great. I would play them if it weren't for the fact you need to micro your units quite well to pull off an effective attack. Especially since your armies are usually huge.
I like toss because of zealots. Zealots are just so goddamn cool. They have 160 hitpoints and cost 100 mins. Come on, how kickass is that? They can just storm into a base and keep on going for quite some time.
Toss also has shield batteries, observers, easy building and some great splash damage units.

I've always loved the Protoss. Zealots are little freakin' powerhouses. Plus, I've never been good at making lots of units, so having a few that go a long way makes it a lot easier. And then there's Reavers, oh, Reavers. The splash is awesome, and they don't harm your own forces, contrary to what Prima says. In the campaign I used a lot of Dragoons and Corsairs with Disruption Web, excellent against bunkers and static defenses. Then again the campaign used quite a lot of those, so it isn't as useful online. Recall has also anchored me to the Protoss. Attack the main then Recall to the flank. The enemy ends up with all his units at his main defending invaders that are no longer there XD. Interceptors make great scouts too. Have a Carrier on one side of their base attack something, then Recall the interceptors to the other side. They zoom over the enemy base and barely take a hit! And what's not to love about High Templar? Hallucination, Psionic Storm, and Archons! Observers and Dark Templar make great expo killers, too.

Terrans mine. i just like controlling our fellow humans and i started off playing terran. i like the feel of building all over and i like their Bos. But again, what you consider "your" race all depends on feel. some ppl play ran, but others like to concentrate on 1 race. personally, i can play ran, but i like playing terran more.

lol. oh and i love playing ran because all 3 races have things that i like. Zerg has a nice macro ability, while toss have the dts which i absolutely love, and terrans just has tanks.

@jays: so what you did was pretty much choose a race that was less used in the game that you were playing? thats pretty wierd :_poke:

In da following row dawgs!

Zerg
Terran
Protoss

I mainly like Zerg because they are the perfect race for a total noob like me. When i first played, i played terran a lot because, well i was human also. But then i realized that was dumb, because its a lot better to be versiatle than profcient at one thing. Thats when i fell in love with the zerg. There units are cheaper, they can mass units faster, and very powerful at large numbers. Even though there weak, you can still micro zerg pretty good, and macros no problem.

Actually, the Protoss are considered the race for newbies on popular beliefs. They construct buildings easier and units are stronger. Unlike the Zerg you waste a drone for a building and newb players doesn't know how to build up a large force.

eh...

My race is Terran. I like their background; outcasts and struggling to make a name for themselves. I like their style too, Ghosts impersinating as assassins, mechanical units and nuclear weapons. I eventually came to love each unit and their role in combate.

I like ZERG because i like to super mass with a million trillion units and watch as my enemy is covered in 350 zerglings.
Also i'm pretty good with terrain (^_^) blowing things up is FUN!

I like Terran because they require skill in microing and strategies. While I might not have much of that in reserve, I enjoy taking a challenge sometimes. Also, I'mfairly familiar with their BOs, tricks, strats, and hotkeys. Also, I like their unit quotes ^^. Plus:

- Siege tank/Vulture
- M&M
- Building Lift
- Highest Worker HP
- Scis
- really cool units.

Zerg, because of 5/3 ultra/lurk/ling+ds. :)

When I finished the Protoss campaign missions on the regular version of the game, I immediately fell in love with the Protoss. Sure, their first combat unit costs 100 minerals, but, after seeing the sacrifice and willpower these daring warriors so willingly gave, I knew that the Protoss was my race.

I prefer playing Terran as opposed to either of the other races. Partly because I'm more proficient with them (although, admittedly, that isn't saying much), but more importantly because the Terran's greatest strength is the lack of an investment in one. Whereas the Zerg are built for speed, and the Protoss for power, the Terrans are committed to flexibility. Unlike the encampments of the other races, Terrans can effectively employ guerilla warfare & hit-and-fade tactics, leaving the enemy bemused and vulnerable. Terran units have the necessary speed to make a tactical retreat, whilst retaining enough firepower to cause substantial damage. For nearly every situation a Terran commander faces there is a viable counter, no assault that can't be prepared for. And a solid defense that keeps the enemy wondering just what you have in store.

My lot has been cast with their camp, and there it shall stay.

I'm still a begginer but my favourite race is zerg because they are cute. I like the way they mutate into buildings. I like that they restore their health. I like them because I don't need to make supply depots or pylons so I can have more space. I like them because I can make 12 mutalisks at the same time. Zergs are nice.

Zerg, because of 5/3 ultra/lurk/ling+ds. :)

Whoa dude that rapes any form of T attack(well except air but then again that's why u have ds).

I like protoss because: I can't mico with terran.
I can't macro or micro with zerg.
So that leaves toss.

Well I personaly like terran best but I play zerg because it's got a little better feel to it and is more understandable. And an ironic thing is that even though I haven't played T in a while I tried it again and found I'm a bit better at it. :o

Zerg, because of 5/3 ultra/lurk/ling+ds.

Yea that might have a little to do with it too.

that explains your avatar. anyways i started with zerg because i just like that kind of organic things. Then i went to terran because i got tired of killing my own species but now i'm getting better at zerg again and i'm soon going to switch.(everyone of my friends think protoss are the best and i wanna prove them wrong)

Matty, it also owns P pretty well, too. The only situation it isn't really useful is against Zerg, obviously.

It would be dangerous, and a 5/3 ultralurkerling army might just own in a ZvZ. GETTING 5/3 ultralurkering, now THAT might prove a bit difficult:P

This might sound awkward, but i only played terran to be special. Like the last blizzcon tourney, there were so many toss/zergs, but only 1 terran. I knew before terran was a hard race to play with, and i thought it sucked. I later decided to give it another try for a month, i let go all of my zerg skills and started playing terran. Who knew that i actually became really good with them. Though expoing with them in TvP is harder than rocket science.

Honestly, I wish I could play all 3 races equally, but I just can't micro (or macro) zerg worth anything. I'm probably twice as good with terran and toss as I am with zerg, which is why I play T and P about the same amount of time.

There's my reason. Quite a beautiful post, too.
