Apparently Steve Irwin, the famous Crocodile Hunter, has finally been done in by a stingray barb that pierced his chest. Yikes, I can't really belive this. It seems sort of like it was bound to happen eventually, though.

Actualy, it seems this may have all been a hoax. According to someone on wikipedia, and an artical, Stingrays don't stab people, they work like jellyfish. And also you would be protected in a wetsuit. Apperintly.
If it's not, that sucks :concern:

hopefully this is all a publicity stunt - tomorrow we'll be reading in the papers "STEVE IRWIN BEATS DEATH!" in bold letters on the front page and underneath, in smaller letters, it will read "Steve Irwin beats house!" with a pic of him holding a Royal Flush in the casino off to the side - I plan to be standing behind him in that picture holding a stingray above his head, ready to strike :D

It's not a hoax:
However, when they are attacked by predators or stepped on, the barbed stinger in their tail is mechanically whipped up, usually into the offending foot; it is also possible, although less likely, to be stung "accidentally" by brushing against the stinger.
It is possible for ray stings to be fatal if they sever major arteries, are in the chest or pelvic region, or are improperly treated.
Biohazard

Dasyatids do not attack aggressively, or even actively defend themselves. When threatened their primary reaction is to swim away. However, when they are attacked by predators or stepped on, the barbed stinger in their tail is mechanically whipped up, usually into the offending foot Source (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stingray)
So I suppose that it is possible that it happened, but how could its stinger pierce his chest AND his heart...
If this is actually true, it makes me sad because I am an avid fan of Animal Planet and he is such an amazing human being...he was a blessing to this earth, god rest his soul

Well, I for one don't entirely believe this. I've since to see a definite answer. Most, if not all of the news articles state that he is "reportedly" dead. Also, the original article fails to sight any sources or interviewed people. Either it was quickly or poorly written, or it’s a hoax. I guess I'll find out later today when a defiant answer appears.

Unfortuneatly, the man IS dead.
It has been reported on both Australian radio and TV news.
He was killed in a freak accident in Cairns, police sources said today.
It is understood he was killed by a stingray barb that went through his chest and reportedly into his heart .
He was swimming off the Low Isles at Port Douglas filming an underwater documentary when the tragedy occured.
The Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) was called about 11am (AEST) and an emergency services helicopter was flown to the crew's boat on Batt Reef, off the coast near Cairns, with a doctor and emergency services paramedic on board.
Irwin had a puncture wound to the left side of his chest and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Irwin's body is being flown to Cairns.

I just came and was genna post that... but WK beat me to it...
When asked if he had ever heard of anyone dying from a stingray barb Matthew Hurley, general manager of Quicksilver Group, whose company has taken tours to Low Isles for 26 years, said: "No, definitely not."
Well at least it was special?

This was the first thing I was told by my brother when I came back from my exams today. Man, this just depresses me. Steve was just frickin' awesome.
Well, at least being stung by a stingray was better than being drowned and having your and your whole family's dead body being flown down the river like that Russian family who films documentaries.
Condolences to his wife and kids. Pity he had to go when he received bad criticism in the last 2 years of his life.
I feel for his poor kids and wife. :(
A sting ray, of all things. I was watching sky news and they (medics, I think) hypothesised that he sting ray's barb had got him in/near the heart, but last I heard they were getting ready to do a post mortem.
This is pretty bad news. Even if one does not approve of some of his characteristics or actions, he does have two children. Hunts crocodiles, but gets killed by a stingray. R.I.P.
Edit: The moral of the story is that you never know the day or the hour.

Dam....poor guy...he was awesome....
his pasion was his undoing it seems... i'm really sorry for him... :/
Ya'll ever take into consideration the venom of the sting? Some species have their barbs laced with some deadly shit that will kill in almost no time at all.
It is a very sad day for animal and Irwin lovers. I loved his energy that he brought into the topics, and how fun he seemed to have with the animals, as well as respecting them at the same time as showing us what, who, and how they work, are, and do.

I'm just rather surprised he messed with crocs... snakes... sharks... hippos... etc... and yet dies from a stingray. :/
Well, he got it in the heart, a straight shot. Report has it he died on site, and was relatively quick... I hope so. But what really sucks,

I'm totally fucking bummed. He was kinda corny, but still VERY cool. It's really sad. I'm not too suprised however... With all the dangerous stuff he did, I'm shocked he lasted this long. But, shit... of all the animals, a STINGRAY!? :concern:
As they say though, at least he died doing something he loved, which is more than most people get.

Ouch  . I liked him. He messes with crocs that kill people easily, yet gets killed by an animal that is "very rare" to kill someone. Man.
I was gutted when I heard the news from a friend on Deviant Art. She drew a tribute picture for him, it was really touching. Everyone I've spoke to about it is shocked by this. I suppose it was inevitable that he would be killed doing what he loved. He had a great passion for animals and educating people about them and will truly be missed.

I heard all about it you guys. Australia and the Great Barrier Reef is just below my country.
It was said that the stingray's tail pierced a hole on his heart. When his buddies tried to bring him to the hospital, he already died.
Memories...
Tragedy strikes the world. One of the greatest wildlife icons just passed away recently. A real guy who would always be remembered with his "Crikey!" catch phrases.
Steve Irwin will always be treasured in our hearts.

He was an animal conservationist and an activist. To say that he "taunted" wildlife is pretty ignorant and inflammatory. Try to avoid saying stupid crap in a goodbye thread.
I was in the Atlanta airport last night when I first heard about this. Everyone in the airports was pretty stunned. Everyone was glued to the TV's.
It's not the death of a human that is so sad, but the death of a guy that loved to live life to the fullest. Some people are content to just waddle though life, and I can't feel too badly for them when they die. But Steve Irwin was such a vibrant character and it's just awful to see that light extinguished.

I have to say the mood in Perth has been very strange indeed. My eldest daughter is devastated. They said on the news that counselors had been called to schools to attend grieving children who are reacting as if they had lost a member of there own family. I have to say I have been very surprised at my own reaction to this, since hearing the news I have practically thought of not much else, hearing a phrase in my head like "Crikey, isn't that a beauty" and realising I am going to miss it immensely. Steve Irwin was an Australian icon, it took his death for us to realise he was in fact an Australian legend. I am sure that in 500 years time Aussie children will still be told stories about the crocodile hunter, along with stories of the like of Ned Kelly and Sir Donald Bradman. I love the way Nuts put it, he was indeed a light brighter than most and it is such a shame that we will never see that vital glow again.

What I loved about his style, was that he was ALWAYS passionate about what he did. He had some great energy! I'll admit, (to me) he seemed kinda goofy at times, but he LOVED what he did and you couldn't help but smile and respect him when you watched him do it.
Not to mention, he was a complete tough guy to the very end. He fucking pulled that serrated stingray barb out of his heart in the moments before he died. Damn. :worship:

Yes, the death was caught on camera but I doubt it will ever be shown. TV shows can't legally show it and I'm sure the cameraman was friends with him, so the tape was probably either destroyed or stored away safe somewhere.
It is a sad loss indeed. I always enjoyed watching his shows when younger, especially how he was always excited when discovering wildlife. The world is worse off without him.
