Cut out soda from your diet. Don't lift to many weights, just do about 60 minutes cardio a day 5 days of a week. ALso, eating healthy is a good thing but to lose weight you need to eat less and work out more. It isn't recomended to cut more than 500 calories out of your diet daily.

Taking up mild weightlifting isnt actually bad for you, if you do it the right way. With weightlifting, go easy on the weight but do as many repititions as you can, and several sets of that. Though it doesnt seem to burn many calories, it builds muscle, and people who have more muscle can take in more calories. To lose wieght, you cant just focus on one thing, either. You have to work out your whole body. Excercise whatever you can.

Notice I didn't tell him to stop lifting weights... I just know an hour of cardio and very light weight lifting is better for you, especially if you don't have a lot of time to work out every day.
Also, don't forget to take some days off otherwise you'll end up hurting yourself.

I suggest trying out a spinning class at the local gym if available.

Spin classes are good but they can get kinda spendy IIRC so if you are on a tight budget they probably aren't the best idea.

How many calories should I consume a day? And 3500 calories is a pound right?

TinyDancer

No idea about the calories per pound thing, your average adult consumes 2000 a day, or is supposed to I think, a healthy number is between that and 1500, and if you're trying to lose weight, never cut it below 1200, but it's hard to get it below 1500 anyway. That's for girls, not sure about guys, and it all depends on your metabolism, and how much you exercise per day.

It takes 3500 calories to lose one pound. The ACSM (American College of Sports Medicine) recommends a daily intake of no less that 1200 calories a day for a healthy adult with moderate exersize. and your caloric consumption shouldnot fall below 800 a day without doctor's supervision.
If you go into a 500 calorie deficit a day you will lose about 2.2 pounds a week (1 KG if you live anywhere else)

That is straight out of the text book for the class I took that certified me.

I know, I've been in them before and actually I believe I am certifed to instruct them too.
I also haven't had much experience with civilian gyms, I know that they charge for membership but I was also under the impression that some charged for extra stuff like spin classes and what not.

Also, yeah good luck in losing those pounds, don't expect the results to be overnight though,it takes about 8-12 weeks before you really start to notice a difference. If you lose the weight in a healthy way, less if you starve/dehydrate yourself and work out a shit load but thats not recomnded for ANYONE.

Well, my dad is on a "diet". Or at least was, but he's kinda slipping.

I got the idea that it's better not to go on a diet, but change your lifestyle to a small degree. You need to find something that you can really keep up for a while. It will prolly take longer than if you eat 1500 cals a day and work your ass off in the gym, but you'll definitely be able to keep it up longer. Here's some things you can change:

Eat five times a day, but absolutely nothing in between. For example:
breakfast: Some healthy cereal like Wheatabix, and a piece of fruit
12 O'clock: Muesli bar
3 O'clock: 2 or 3 Sandwiches of choice
Dinner: W/E, just don't eat takeaway of rast food more than once every week. Piece of fruit after.
9 O'clock: a handful nuts or pretzel thingies.

Just an example.
Remember this is flexible, if you watch a movie with your mates, eating a bag of crisps won't kill you. Nor will this type of eating make the flab fly off you, but if you keep it up, it really helps.

30 minutes of excersize (Spelling??) every day, and one hour twice a week.

Doing 10 sit ups when you wake up and when you go to sleep helps too.

what I mean to say is, Rome wasn't built in a day. If you just change your daily rythm and keep that sustainable for a couple of years, it will do a whole lot better than working your ass off for 3 months, and then going back to your usual routine.

Hope I helped!

breakfast: Some healthy cereal like Wheatabix, and a piece of fruit
12 O'clock: Muesli bar
3 O'clock: 2 or 3 Sandwiches of choice
Dinner: W/E, just don't eat takeaway of fast food more than once every week. Piece of fruit after.
9 O'clock: a handful nuts or pretzel thingies.

Not true, if you snack healthy throughout the day and after you work out it can be benificial, but make sure its a healthy snack, like an apple. Also don't eat anything after about 8:00 or so. If you do then go to sleep you will burn less of the calories and store the weight more so.

If you have the time its better to do an hour of exersize for now on Monday, Wendsday, and Friday. As you get in shape, slowly increase that until its Monday thru Friday. You need to give your body time to recover otherwise you'll damage your joints and cause muscle tears from over use.

Another thing I'd suggest is setting a goal, say set a goal that in 4 months you will do a halfmarathon, or something like that. It gives you motivation aside from the classic

zOMG! I must lose weight otherwise I won't.

Also

Doing 10 sit ups when you wake up and when you go to sleep helps too.
Not to much, you'd be better off doing about 50 crunches in a workout, and yes there is a difference. Also, don't expect the sit ups to help you lose any weight around your gut right away, because spot weight reduction is a bunch of bullshit thought up by infomercials to make you buy the stuff you wrap around your waist that will shock you and make you "muscles contract".

Also, drink ONLY water during your workouts and nothing else, but after a work out drink a sports drink like gatorade or powerade. Don't drink to much water though, otherwise you'll suffer from water intoxcation (sp?) and pass out and probably die.

Oh, I got another idea. You could wear ankle weights whenever you walk, even inside the house. They help burn off calories. Just don't run or jog with them because that could cause your knees to weaken which obviously isn't good. As an added effect, they strengthen your leg, and I've heard they can make you faster, which I why I bought myself a pair of ankle weights.

Usually not recommended, sure they cause you to burn more calories but they still cause some ankle damage in the long run.

I lost 5 pounds in one week by eating only fruit at lunch, eating no junk food, and drinking nothing but water and milk. I dropped from 170 to 165. I'm starting that again, and i'm going to start excercising. I want to lose weight and get back into shape.

Ubergopher

That is a good way to lose weight, but if you want to get in shape you'll need to work out, also don't be suprised if you gain weight if you work out, after all a pound of muscle is smaller than a pound of fat. So you'd trim down but gaind more weight.

losing weight doesn't mean you'd stop eating. you have to eat, dude. you have to eat.
keep eating what's right: less calories.

no tempations. :)

Woohoo, not true.
If you eat right and you are not eating right now you could possibly increase your caloric intake and due to meal spacings, working out, or what not still burn more calories than you intake...
CALORIES ARE NOT BAD.

I use to play DDR like 2 + hours a day and I lost a whole grip of weight :D

Dancing is good for you! :D

EDIT: And also--I cut back my portions--No more 2nds for me! :D

Yeah, if you are to into exersizing DDR for about 30-60 minutes 3-5 times a week can help, I'd just suggest getting the home version, playing it at an arcade could get expensive though :D

Yeah it seriously is, and DDR even has a workout thing on it, you can set up a routine and figure out how many calories you're burning, etc.

DDR is actually a surprisingly good workout, especially if you set it to a "non-stop" style where you do not have a lot of time (or any at all) between songs.

I find that drinking lots of water really helps. Much better than soda.

Additionally, depending on your weight, under 2000 calories might not be reasonable, especially if you're a guy. During track season, my suggested intake was significantly more than that, though I don't remember the exact number.

I grew up taking DDR as one of the only playstation games with a good purpose. :)
