I posted this at BF but it's just too awsome not to post here too:

http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=11211166&sid=1
What's even worse... it's a true story. Look at the links he posts at the bottom of page 1.

Well worth the read. http://www.blizzforums.com/images/smilies/rofl.gif

EDIT: Stupid (the player this happened to), states in page 2 on the thread that all the news services assumed that he had simply dropped his Ipod in the toilet and didn't want to pick it out. While instead he states that he only realized afterwards what had happened.

"Folks, this is the captain. I don't want to alarm you, but we've found a suspicious device in the front lavatory. Now, we think it's probably nothing, but in this day and age ... you can never be too careful. We'll be landing at Ottawa, where we will await further instructions."

I don't buy it. You do not panic your passengers and you don't give them details.
Let me rephrase, I don't buy his accounting of the story.

Actually, I'm wrong. The last article mentions the pilot making such a remark over the intercom. In which case I reserve the right to call him a dumbass for panicking his passengers.

Excert from one of the opinion pieces: "When the pilot on my Ottawa-bound United flight from Chicago last Tuesday came on the intercom to report a problem, I felt a trickle of panic, even though he assured us that there was no cause for alarm. They had discovered, he said awkwardly, an object on the plane that should not be there. He had notified the authorities at Ottawa airport, and they would handle the problem upon our arrival."

Jesus Christ!! That makes me flipping mad!!! Just because of a dropped IPod in the crapper, the goverment gets all scared because of a music device!!!!

If the thing started to play a tune they might think its about to blow!!!

I liked em both. But the fourth panel on the newb/noob one was...hilarious.

I feel much safer that I don't have an ipod, and certainly wouldn't drop it in the toilet... but it could have been a bomb, couldn't it? And then what would have happened? :shiftyr:

They were so paranoid... that would have been a really scary situation.

I can understand the need for caution, but the reaction still seemed a bit 'too much' to me.

but it could have been a bomb, couldn't it? And then what would have happened?

Then once the flight recorder was recovered and they discovered the cause everyone would be bitching about why the plane WASN'T landed when they discovered the possible bomb...

MidnightGladius

Ouch. IEDs can look like just about anything, from cell phones to watches to bracelets to lollipops.

It takes a bit more time and effort, but believe me, disguising explosives is very commonly done.

Yay for laziness.
how in the world can an ipod look like a bomb?
Two ways I can think of off the top of my head and I'm not even in EOD...
1. He could have put some explosives in the "Ipod" it self and have the case just be a shell
2. Used as a trigger device for an explosive located elsewhere in the plane.

Oh, have you ever seen an ipod covered in shit and toilet paper or for that matter a bomb?

Its not a case of a ipod looking like a bomb, but rather a case of a bomb looking like an iPod, think about it.

Anyways I think all of this can be taken in a really cynical way: The terrorists have won. Our lives have been forever changed and paranoia, for better or worse, has taken hold on our society.

Good points. The terrorists have really achieved their aim - to spread terror. That's where their name comes from.

But of course the paranoia is needed... but it helps to be paranoid before something happens.

I don't know what's "false" about caring for one another because of fear. It binds a lot of people in the armed forces very close, and most still keep in contact after that fear has been removed. And in terms of the "terrorists have won", I can only laugh. Their world has been permanently altered by the US' entry into the Middle East, and most of their organizations have been completely uprooted and wrecked.

But hey, we didn't check bags very well before the terrorists were here, so the terrorists have "won". I don't know what they've "won" or what political pundits keep hoping to accomplish by spamming this phrase. Yes, they've "won" making our security 10 times better than when they first started. They've "won" by getting mass-busted by customs officials in the US and the UK, every time they try to pull something.

But hey, you're inconvienced by having to wait an extra half hour, so why not throw in a little rhetoric about them "winning" some intangible, unpalatable thing to make yourself feel better. It always nurses a sore asshole after you lose an election too, I'm sure.

In other news, the NFL has decided to remove defensive players from the field because defense appears to indicate that the other team has won.

I have no problems with upgraded security when everyone is subjected to it. I'm happy to wait an extra hour to get on a "safe" plane. When someone who looks different gets unjustly treated due the ignorance and paranoia of a few ignorant fucks, then I get angry about it. Since when have the passengers determined whether or not a plane flies or not? So, my travel plans are dictated by the insecure whim of other people now? If you feel scared enough, or insecure, then YOU wait for the next plane. Welcome to America bitches. It's a melting pot. Deal. We all go through the same checkpoints. If a person has a ticket to get on a plane, then I can only assume (hope) that the security teams monitoring those checkpoints are better equiped to determine if that passenger is a threat or not.

I can't say whether or not terrorists have "won", but if their goal is to make a civilized society turn on members of it's own out of sheer paranoia, then at the very least, they have chalked up some major points on the score board for their team.

In other news, the MLB has removed the statistic "Errors" from the scoreboard and instead elected to call games "won" as soon as an Error has been made.
