View Full Version : Should I make a Triggering Tutorial Site?

I know about "StarEdit Network", but I don't really like reading text too much, and I think I could be good at writing tutorials accompanied with pictures.
Think this would help with a LOT of the questions on this board about Triggering?
(Yes, I KNOW I recently forgot about a simple option in the editor, that's from not making a map for over a year! ^.^)

Uh, no. Firstly, saying you didn't make maps for a year is a poor excuse, because even if you did forget, ten minutes of looking around the editor would have found you your answer.
The FAQ here and some of the guides at StarEdit and even Campaign Creations cover most of the complex stuff, the rest people can and should try to figure out on their own. If more people read the FAQ then we wouldn't have as many questions.
Most people seem to easily grasp how the triggers work after some initial struggling, but not how they should apply them, which is a creative problem, and that's something you really can't tutor them on since they need to use their own ideas.
No one can stop you from making the site though, so I don't even know why you asked this. Honestly I think it would be wasted time since it will only lead to dependency, if people have everything laid out for them then they won't experiment and try new things.

Exactly, just make a thread here.

I think you guys are missing my point.
If I would make a tutorial site, there would be a LOT less repeated posts here, making a tutorial as they are requested on this site to make it so that questions wouldn't be reasked. So that the forum would be "clean" and you wouldn't get "noob" threads like there are a lot of.
I want to make it so you could just browse the site "oh, that's how it works", and try it out for yourself.

While it'd be nice babs and hyper are right. If you go on creating site like that then.. what's the point of warboards? Most people don't like looking through tutorial site anyways. They'd rather come to a person that can give them their answer and move on with life.

The point of WarBoards is for certain circumstances, not for peeps to post questions that've been asked a thousand times. If that's what you want "real peeps", then don't get annoyed when peeps dont' check "Maps & Mods Resources" or whatever.
That's why I want to make something that peeps can just look to, say they forget something, I looked through StarEdit and it's confusing as hell imo, so My interface would be simple, clean, and easy to use, as well as hosting my custom maps. ^.^

Let's use Joe as an example.
Joe decided he wants to create a Starcraft map. He opened the editor, attempted some stuff, but failed in his goal. Joe knows that there's a starcraft site, starcraft.org. He also knows that sc.org has a forum - Warboards. Thus, Joe registers at Warboards, finds the Starcraft Mapping section, and creates a thread that describes his problem. He bookmark the thread and leaves, planning to return later and read the replys.
Notice something? Joe never stopped to read the FAQ, or look for a solution thru search.
Here's another example, Bob.
Bob was a long time mapper, but he lost interest in Starcraft, and started doing other things for a year or so. Then, he decided he's interested in Starcraft again, and would like to create a map. Something is stopping him, though. He forgot how to do something. Bob, who already knows about the mapping community, immediately goes to Staredit Network and reads a tutorial that puts him back on track.
Notice something? He doesn't go to Spdstr's tutorial site, who he might not even heard of, or heard of but yet hadn't had a chance to check it out. Instead, he goes to a site that's already up for years, and known to have his solution.
Creating a Starcraft tutorial site, Spdstr, would be like writing a blog.

AQO Trooper... !LOL! that's like so much of what i wanted to say... and yes, Spdstr's "thought" is not a good one. #1- no one would know about it, scince WarBoards won't let you advertise here, and you can't advertise on any other StarCraft Site. #2- What would be the use of it? as AQO said, people would go to FAQs or StarEdit Network. and #3- NOBODY WANTS A GODDAMN TUTORIAL SITE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!

Bob is an idiot then because my site isn't out yet so of COURSE he'd never hear of it. The other guy would go "hey, this site has a lot of useful stuff that'll answer my questions quickly and efficiently! I'll have to bookmark this."
I KNOW that people would use it, because I use tutorials for Counter-Strike: Source mapping, so why wouldn't some people use it if they want an answer RIGHT away?
That's why I don't like using "real people", because it takes time for them to respond, just like my SIMPLE unit properties question, it took 2 days for someone to post the RIGHT THING, even though the guy who gave me the wrong answer basicly calls ME an idiot, whereas if I would've found a tutorial, I would've had it done within 5 mins...

Bob is an idiot
I had to use characters that represent a large portion of the SC players community.
The other guy would go "hey, this site has a lot of useful stuff that'll answer my questions quickly and efficiently! I'll have to bookmark this."
You talk like this is your first time in the internet.
Averege people who are too lazy then to figure something on their own and use others to help them will never care about efficiency, or getting it done as fast as possible, for that matter. All they care about is getting an answer and having to do as little to get it. As it turns out, writing a question in a forum is easier then browsing thru a list of tutorials looking for the exact thing you need.
I KNOW that people would use it, because I use tutorials for Counter-Strike: Source mapping, so why wouldn't some people use it if they want an answer RIGHT away?
Some people will use it, true, but trust me: If your tutorial wasn't there, these people will find someone else's tutorial, and read it instead. So you'll change nothing.
That's why I don't like using "real people", because it takes time for them to respond, just like my SIMPLE unit properties question, it took 2 days for someone to post the RIGHT THING, even though the guy who gave me the wrong answer basicly calls ME an idiot, whereas if I would've found a tutorial, I would've had it done within 5 mins...
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=starcraft+how+to+special+abilities+set+to+resear ched+map&btnG=Search
Amazing, isn't it? All it took is one simple search, and the first result clearly says:
Go to the Special abilities tab in the player menu. Click on Stim Pack under Terran Technologies, and set the default setting to Researched by Default.
Looks to me like this answers your question just fine. Immidietly. Well, actually, it took me two tries to get the right search sentence, so I'd say a minute.
However, you never bothered to search, which just proves my point.

Actually I did...
I looked through StarEdit network, searched through StarForge, and DID search Google, but not being as specific didn't find anything, proving MY point ;).
