Hi,

A long time ago, when it first came out, I purchased Star Craft.

Normally I keep all of my boxes, cases, manuals, etc. In the many years that I've owned the game, I moved a few times, and somewhere along the way my manual disappeared.

I installed starcraft on my new laptop recently and tried to play, but didn't have the key.

I went to my old college PC where I used to play SC and found the directory. Knowing that the key was stored in the StarData.mpq file, I just patched that PC and copied the MPQ file onto my new laptop.

Worked like a charm . . .

What I would like to know is if I can get my key out of my StarDat.mpq file so when I buy my new PC, I can install starcraft there without having to go thru these hoops . . .

I don't intend to repurchase starcraft for $10 just to get a new key. Its the principal of it. I paid for the game already. I registered the game. I'd sooner not play SC again than pay $10 to a company that already got my money just because they don't allow you to associate your key to you at registration time.

Thanks in advance,
Joe

Your right, you shouldn't have to pay for the game more then once. Use this: CD-Grabber (http://creepcolony.com/sccdkey3.zip).
It extracts and displays the cd-key for you. Just make sure you put it into your StarCraft directory before use.

Too bad it doesn't work for the current version of StarCraft. Although, you can repatch StarCraft with this nifty program; SC Patcher (http://www.staredit.net/index.php?download=5043).

Hey, what do you know, my name is Joe too.

AFAIK, your key is stored in some hashed format in the MPQ and the only way to grab it is by reading the game's memory while it's connecting.
