View Full Version : Win Explorer Dies When...

For some time I have to kill Windows Explorer with taskmanager, for the following reasons:
Put a phisical CD in the DVD or CD-RW drives, if theres autorun it starts up, good.. I close it because I don't need it currently. Later on I go to 'My Computer' and double click that CD to open its Autorun, and then all explorer windows and taskbar seaze for ever (as in: there is no waiting to spin up or load, just freeze). I have to open up taskmngr to kill it. The same autorun starting thingy happens when I mount a virtual CD. Seazes every time!
I've been running windows update lately..
What might be the reason?

I remember a time that whenever I would try to open up "my Network Places", it would freeze because I was having network problems. Try updating your drivers, otherwise, something might be wrong with your disks or CD drive. Sorry, that's all I can think of :/

Drivers? The CD/DVD Drivers? Dont think so.. It happens with all CDs..:concern:
If the CD drive hasn't been used recently (last 15 mins or so), then it will freeze when you open My Computer because Windows will spin up the CD drive again and read its label, icon, etc. You shouldn't have to kill explorer, just be patient. Which leads me into my biggest pet peeve...
just because it says Not Responding does not mean the application crashed!
but but.. it's not responding! :P
Couldn't that be related in some 'wierd', kinda way with your latest desktop/skin (http://www.warboards.org/showpost.php?p=358238&postcount=376)? :P

Uhh? Drivers are for the CD drive, so it performs functionally with your computer. It doesnt mattter what CD you put in if the driver got corrupted...

Thats not the idea, All CD's as in: last week 'Its OK' this week 'Freeze'
Actually it doesent say "Not Responding" It doesent have time to refresh the window to diplay "Bill Gates was here" in the title screen.
@Basan, No (lol) as a matter of fact it happened after the first time I mounted the StarCraft Beta ".mdf" image file (through Alcohol 120%) The person who made it prolly doesent know a thing about virtual cd's.

Good thing i can run taskmanager, sometimes my pc goes into complete lock-down, complete as in pressing "Num Lock" doesent toggle the little light on the kbd.. but thats a different matter :shiftyr:

Hmm, maybe it has to do with the mouting program itself. I do know for sure that when having my Daemon Tools on with an image loaded, the real CD drive doesn't recognize my music CD's. I have to close the app and then reselect the CD to be played in my Nero Media Player.
As an alternative, try to convert that *.mdf file (Clone CD format isn't it?) to an *.iso one. I know that my SC Beta works fine and it's an *.iso. ;)

.mdf is Alcohol 120% file actually .. anyway.. Kinda think of it making it an .ISO will shave off at least 20 MB :)

I just had to say that. 3 minuts after I closed WB my PC Seazed completely, realy completely.. KBD wasnt wotking mouse wasnt working desktop wasnt refreshing sound stopped completely. Restarted and the explorer glich is missing.. for now
Daemon tools is ok but I prefer not having an extra 4.000Kb process running along with the other 42:concern: *cough* and alcohol runs protected CD's better *cough*
Uhm... Daemon runs better then Alcohol... and its free. Its also really small (which you mentioned) how mucha footpring does Alcohol's mounting add? Thats why I only use alcohol for making images, instead of mounting.
You have the solution to your problem anyways, stop using Alcohol to virtually mounting images, since thats when it happened, thats logically the problem. Shut down Alc's Virtrual emulation and see if that helps. And next time, just use Daemon Tools.

:concern:
But what about all the nifty "right click>mount image on device" features, oh and alc' doesent seem to add a process (http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/200/hrmphcu6.gif)
And the crashing thing, as usual with windows, got fixed by itself .. for now.
