View Full Version : Resolution doesn't reset when closing SC

Teh wtfz0rz

I was playing SC with my Dad over a LAN on my laptop and it hibernated mid game, I didn't realize the power cord slipped out. T_T When I rebooted the computer with the power cord plugged in correctly everything was in the StarCraft resolution (640x480 or something) and in 256 color mode. When I closed StarCraft, all the desktop icons got screwed up because you can only fit like 12 on the screen with that resolution. I put the resolution back up and rearranged the dekstop icons, not a huge deal.

The problem now is that when I close StarCraft on my laptop, the resolution stays in 640x480 in 256 color mode and I have to manually put it back up to what it should be. The desktop icons sometimes do and sometimes don't rearrange themselves and I've had a couple times where the resolution reset correctly, but less often than not. This is really ticking me off. i notice when I minimize WMP and it goes into that weird mode where is on the taskbar but it allows you to still press Play and Pause and stuff without maximizing the program, it minimizes in the location it would in 640x480 resolutions so everything else on the taskbar suddenly gets squished to the left. I haven't any screenshots because I forgot to put them onto my memory card to upload them from this computer.

Anyways, I was wondering if anyone has encountered something like this before and/or knows how to fix it. My laptop is an Xp with an AMD 64 processor thingy so it is up to date. Oh, and I'll mention it does this will occur with all versions of StarCraft that I've tried (109 - 113f), I've yet to install 1.14 on my laptop so it has nothing to do with the new patch.

Please help if you can. ^^ This first happened a month ago and my patience is running dry.

Hmm, that's a weird prolem indeed. I can't help but think that the starcraft instalation got screwed up somehow? Or maybe a system restore back to a few days before that happened might help. If re-installing starcraft and a system restore don't help then there's a slight chance that your hardware got screwed up somehow (allthough I highly doubt that)

I have that problem but only when my Starcraft goes into idle mode during the game so if I go idle in order to aviod that issue I have to alt tab to my desktop. It also does that if I restart my comp with starcraft running.

T_T I'll try reinstalling soon, I don't currently have a single player disc that installs correctly (scratched somewhre :\ ) but my Dad does. I think I waited too long for a system restore because I never thought of it, I'll lose a lot if I go back a month. Thanks for your help though. I'll reinstall when I get a chance and hope it's not a hardware problem, I have had hardware problems with this thing before. T_T

That happens to me if I have SC maximized and I hit "Sleep." But a restart fixed it usually though.

It happens to my PC all the time too. Just aviod shutting off your computer, hibernate, or standby while StarCraft is still running.

Try to set your power scheme to it doesn't hibernate or anything. All I know is something like that happening when StarCraft is running will ruin your resolution.

For the Windows Media Player, right click on the tasbar, go to Toolbars and uncheck Windows Media Player, it should stop if from going to the toolbar mode. Music players really shouldn't be on anyway, they attend to lag up the game.

Another piece of advice is to turn off any "instant messaging" program. I once made that mistake while playing a b.net game. SC stopped and I couldn't access either program. If you already know this, then it's just a reminder.

LoN, I don't know if this will work for ya, but you can always try to open your SC.exe's properties and settle it to not allow screen saver. I did it on my old PC with it's Win' 98 OS and it worked dandy. Although I seriously doubt if in XP it'll be that easy to pull. >_<

Btw, just as a tip referrer for laptops... Set your OS to make sound alerts when reaching the end of it's battery(ies). I have two set - one when reaching 10% power remaining and other when it hits the 4%. That way, you'll always can tell if the power cord got accidentally disconnected (and prevent the loss of information by the abrupt shut down). ;)
