View Full Version : WCII Tides of Darkness--Need Help
Greetings all, a newbie here. I am having a problem with WCII. Whenever I try to play it, it opens a new window briefly then closes down and I am back to the original menu. I tried re-installing it, but that did not work and there is no uninstall option. I am running Windows XP and don't know if that has anything to do w/ it. I adore this game and would love to be able to play it again. I would sincerely appreciate any help. Thanks!!
You know what...it is possible that Warcraft II isn't compatible with XP. I have the same problem with my SimAnt game (which is the tightest game ever). It doesn't run on anything higher than Windows 98. I was almost crying when I found that out.

Try running Warcraft2 in compatability mode for Windows95 (search the windows help for how to do it).
Thanks all-- I will try the suggestions and let you know how it goes......keeping fingers crossed..........:)
Ok, I tried the compatability mode and tried changing the colors and screen resolution and nothing worked. When I click on "Play Warcraft," I get a black screen and before it closes I can see "DOS" in the left corner. Is it possible that it is trying to run it in DOS mode? I heard back from Blizzard support and they said that it just is not compatable and that I need to buy the Battlenet edition. I suppose I should just do that, I just do not understand why running it in compatability mode did not work. If anyone has any other suggestions, I would love to hear them. If not, thank you so much for the aid offered!:)

I think Blizzard is correct. I haven't heard of anyone getting the original Warcraft2 to work under WindowsXP. Regardless, you can probably find Warcraft2: Battle.net edition for under $20 USD.

True, Warcraft II Tides of Darkness is so old it was made to run in DOS. Other games suffer from the fact Windows XP no longer supports DOS software. But this is no reason to purchase the battlenet edition, unless you wish to go in battle.net.
There is a tight little application called DosBOX. This is an emulator that was created to solve exactly this situation. It works just like any other emulator for snes or genesis and is not hard to use. It comes for several platforms including MacOSX, WindowsXP and Linux. You can find it at:
http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/download.php?main=1
Sure there are lots of links, but just find the one that matches your platform.
Good gamming.

P.S.: E-mail to let me know how it goes and if you are having any trouble I'll help if I can. However don't ask me for help before reading the documentation since it is pretty self-explanatory.
