I've been having bad luck with hard drives latly and my question deals with what happond to me today, ok i have two hard drives, one 40 gb using Windows XP Professional and second one is a 4 gb hard drive that just has SuSE Linux 10.0, well to the point what happond when i started my computer i was hearing clicking sounds which sounds like was comming from my hard drive, besides it has happond to me many times before which i find my hard drive was damaged, but unlike last time it sounded like it was on the linux hard drive becouse when it was booting linux it was clicking alots, so i booted windows it clicked few times then i rebooted linux and it stopped, anyone knows if that could be some damage to the hard drive? Ways to prevent it happoning? and ways to fixing it or will it come back again?

"Click click click". I'd hate to be the bearer of bad new but it sounds like your drive is fried. More than likely the linux drive since it was the one that clicked most when you booted it up. My advice would be to back up that drive asap and replace it. 80g are $50 so getting a new drive shouldn't be a problem.

hmm thought so, it have happond b4, but some odd reason its not doing it anymore, i've checked hd and nothing, but I will buy a new one incase, hell only cost $80 for a 100 gb one, and they sell on new egg, and for backing up, na no need, i just installed that os and there is nothing on it at this time

Fun Fact:
Sometimes putting a hard drive in the freezer will make it work long enough to backup the data on it.

Are you serious? I'd think that water condensation would cause some problems by having a cold HD...

Are you sure the clicking noise was coming from the hard drive? It could have been the fan wearing down, or any other moving part inside your computer could be making a clicking noise. Floppy disk drives make a buzzy/clicky noise when they try to read a disk and there's nothing there (in some cases).

I have heard that putting it in a freezer works for a limited amount of time. Put it in a ziplock if you are afraid of condesation.

Yea the freezer trick definately works. I've used it a few times to get old hds up long enough to back them up just before they crash.
