View Full Version : Live Diplomacy - v2!

Whiteknight

Live diplomacy is back! I want to organize a game between as many people as possible. The map and game type will be decided once the participation amount is calculated, and perhaps there will be a vote with the participants. Anyone is welcome to join.

If you wish to play, then please post what dates you are able to play within the next three weeks in these three categories:

For sure: (Only post dates under this heading if there is nothing barring you from coming, save something incredibly unexpected like a death).

Probably: (If you have the slightest feeling that you might not be able to make it, post your dates under this heading)

Maybe: (If you arn't sure you can make it, but might be able to, post any dates under this heading.

These headings are to make sure that we can have maximum participation with committed people.

EDIT: Game time:

EST: 5:00 (-5 GMT)
EDT: 6:00 (-4 GMT)
CST: 4:00 (-6 GMT)
CDT: 5:00 (-5 GMT)
MST: 3:00 (-7 GMT)
MDT: 4:00 (-6 GMT)
PST: 2:00 (-8 GMT)
PDT: 3:00 (-7 GMT)

on Sunday, August 6th. Meet on IRC in the channel #livediplomacy on the etg network.

For Sure
August 1, 3, 4 for evening / night

Maybe on just about everything else. Really, I don't have that much planned, but this is the time I'll be getting ready to go back to school, so I'm not sure when I'll need to go run and do things.

TheGreatBrain

I'll play, but I can't make any sure commitment, since my work schedule is variable.

Monty

I'm keen.

I'm on GMT +12 time, just tell me what time you're on so I can convert it.

Certain - Weekends, apart from the odd soccer game; Mon, Tues, Thurs, Friday 7pm -> (accounting for school, too).

No chance - Wednesdays

Are there any archives for old diplo games here?

Welcome to WarBoards Monty! It's always good to see more Diplo players show up. We have a thread that lists all of the games that happened up to a certain point; however, this thread hasn't been updated in recent months and there have been a few games that have completed in the time since then. Just browse through the pages of this Diplomacy forum and you'll see threads for quite a few games you can look through, although I'd advise against posting in any that aren't currently active.

I'm on GMT -6, and I believe WhiteKnight is also. Of course, you may also have to take into account rather or not the time we give out is based on Daylight Savings Time or not.

Cheers, Modred.

It's been a while since I've played dilpo - I only remembered it because of another postal wargame I've just started to play.

Do we play the live version over iRC?

Modred
08-01-2006, 3:02 AM
Yes, if we play over IRC it is more similar to a face-to-face game. The times we've done this in the past, the deadlines were more in line with FtF games, most negotiation was done through private messaging and the GM would make the map and post it either here or on another website for everyone to view (not everyone uses a chat client capable of DCC file transfer).

Maegtelluma
08-01-2006, 1:16 PM
I would probably be available for this. I raid Tuesdays/Fridays/Sundays with my guild, but I could certainly run a chat client even on those nights. Once a more specific date has been made, I can give you a positive/maybe.

On IRC, Whiteknight and I were throwing around an idea for this coming weekend. Either Saturday or Sunday night. I'm leaning toward Sunday night. That will be the 6th of August. Don't know about a time, though.

Magmaniac

Sunday night would be swell for me :)

Monty

Sunday night at about 9:30 would rock. Anytime before then would be pushing it for me.

Modred
08-02-2006, 2:33 AM
Let's see...if Monty is on GMT+12, I'll assume he's not on Daylight Savings Time. That would make 9:30 PM his time...

5:30 AM US Eastern (GMT -5)
4:30 AM US Central (GMT -6)
3:30 AM US Mountain (GMT -7)
2:30 AM US Pacific (GMT -8)

US Times are corrected for Daylight Savings Time here in the States (unless of course you're in one of those states that doesn't use DST...just subtract an hour in that case). I'm thinking the game might be a little ways after that. =p

You almost read my mind!

I was trying to save ya'll some time working out the time zones - Sunday 9:30 is Monday 3:30 my time, I think (18 hour time difference sound about right?). I get home from school at about 3:20, so hence the dilemma.

Maegtelluma
08-02-2006, 9:49 AM
Technically speaking I raid on Sunday, but as long as we have at least 10 minutes or so between orders this should be no problem. Both nights work for me.

Alright, so far Sunday of this week is seeming perfect for the live diplomacy game. I'd like some input on to when the time should be, then. I'm thinking around 3:00 pm -7 GMT, but I'd like your input on whether that's too late or too early.

If enough people don't show up this Sunday then I'll reschedule it for next week when more people would be able to plan in advance.

Monty
08-03-2006, 11:37 PM
A few hours too early for me, sorry, which'll be pretty standard for your Sundays (GMT -6, -7, -8 ), my Mondays (GMT +12).

I see your timezone and raise you a player.

I'm in.

Modred
08-04-2006, 10:32 PM
Whiteknight, I'd prefer something a little later, but can make it in the afternoon if that's when everyone else can. However, should we reschedule to next week I most likely will not make it.

i definitely wont be there next weekend. we have to do it now. too many people will miss it

Monty

Anytime tomorrow or 9:30pm (GMT-6) on Sunday is fine by me. I had three people disappear on me so my ftf diplo game fell through the floor just now. I'm determined not to let another quick one slide through my fingers.

you should probably clarify what time zone you're talking about. can you also tell me what it would be in eastern time (daylight savings)?

Something has come up on my end and I'm heading out of town for a day. I will be back on Sunday, but I can't promise that I'll be back in time for 4:00 eastern. I'll check up on this thread later tonight or tomorrow from camp to clarify.

see wk people are already confused. whiteknight is in mountain time i think, -7 hours

Magmaniac

its 6 pm eastern
5 pm central <-me(I might not be able to get there till like 5:30ish but I'll try)
4 pm mountain <-whiteknight
3 pm pacific

anything else you can figure out for yourself. :-P

no see i think that list is wrong, because im on daylight savings time for eastern time it's 5pm, not 6pm. because normally ET is -7 hours. we really need to figure this out.

basically, here's how you figure it out. whiteknight, make a post and say "we will meet X hours from right now." and then instruct everyone to look at the timestamp on your post (which is adjusted for whatever time zone you are in) and then we will all meet at the correct time.

I thought WK was in Central Time....and do we know for certain that Canada doesn't do DST? I know Mexico does, at least in Coahuila. How about WK just posts what timezone he's in and if he's on DST. From there he or another can convert.

or you can do this "whiteknight, make a post and say "we will meet X hours from right now." and then instruct everyone to look at the timestamp on your post (which is adjusted for whatever time zone you are in) and then we will all meet at the correct time."

and that takes human error out of the equation (which can be a big problem when dealing with me :P). im just worried i wont make it and and neither will my friends, thats you guys

Monty

Well think there won't be too much confusion if he posts something like "12 hours from now" and we just chuck that onto the time at which he posted, as hammock said. too much fiddling round otherwise.

Yeah, hammock beat me to it.

Human error out? WK might miscount, users might not have the right time zone in their settings (it isn't automatic), a user could add the hours wrong or accidentally write down the wrong time for the timestamp. You don't need to act like I misunderstood your post and repost the entire thing. In other words, I don't trust everyone to add correctly. Absolute times gives you knowledge of exactly when to show up. We just need to know how to convert.

I see 4 PM at GMT -7.

Hammock, show up at 2. If it's wrong, it's wrong. If you think it's wrong, show up at 3. The worst that will happen is you'll be early.

08-05-2006, 10:21 PM
hey modred i'm not trying to make a nasty argument out of this thing. i'm just trying to make sure everyone gets the correct time. the best thing to do is probably for whiteknight to post what you want, and post what monty and i want.

Monty
08-05-2006, 10:34 PM
Yeah man, it's all cool. No sweat either way.

Most likely situation for me is that I won't be able to make it, though, which is a pain. I'd just like to be sure so that I won't have missed a game because my time zone calculation is bust!

Here are the times for the game:

EST: 5:00 (-5 GMT)
EDT: 6:00 (-4 GMT)
CST: 4:00 (-6 GMT)
CDT: 5:00 (-5 GMT)
MST: 3:00 (-7 GMT)
MDT: 4:00 (-6 GMT)
PST: 2:00 (-8 GMT)
PDT: 3:00 (-7 GMT)

Sorry for any confusion I may have caused.

hammocksleeper
08-05-2006, 11:40 PM
i approve of the above message. :P also, for completeness' sake, i will just say that we will be meeting 18 hours and 20 minutes from right now (look at the time of post).

i think that means 8am for you monty, but i could be wrong.

Monty
08-06-2006, 1:53 AM
It may as well be, hammock! It's right in the middle of my german assessment at ten am. Ah well. If the game lasts longer than five hours I'll be able to login to IRC and see how it's going. As it stands, good luck to you all :)

I'll see what I can do. I'd love to play but the computers here don't have admin access and I don't know if I can install mIRC. I'm Cali, so that would be 3 pm for me, right?

hammocksleeper
08-06-2006, 4:23 PM
you usually dont need admin access to install programs, grassdragon. its worth a shot :) yes, for you it would be 3pm.

Seemed to work out quite well, I had a good time and I would definitely be up for it again sometime. We may want to try to cut down on the time in between turns a little bit, though. It must have been at least 2:00 Eastern by the time I headed out, and that's a tough time to be finishing up regularly ;)

Modred
08-07-2006, 5:46 PM
Most of the delay came from GM side. The way we had it set up, we'd enter the orders into jDip, resolve the orders, export maps for before and after, export orders for before and after. Then copy all of that into a web directory. Then alter the web page that pointed to it all.

If everyone had been okay with slightly less pretty maps, we could have used another program where it cuts out a lot of the in-between time. Enter orders, click resolve, click export and it automatically makes a web page. The GM doesn't have to do any file editing himself. That's what I have up at modred.tk right now. If I'm GMing when we reconvene, we'll be using that then as well.

Maegtelluma
08-07-2006, 10:26 PM
Sounds good. I don't know of jDip, but I assume it works similarly to RealPolitik? RP is quite fast, though I have found that I need to host the images to post them online.
