I need a DVD decoder since my other one gat screwed up and the company I had gotten it from doesn't support that one anymore. Does anyone know where one might be that's any good? Prefereably free? I've got a free one now but it's not very good and crashes the media player when playing dvds.

When you say DVD decoder do you mean software that plays DVD video on a computer? If you're using windows XP then Windows Media Player should have it built in - you can get it from www.windowsupdate.com
If you're looking for software that rips DVD video from a DVD to AVI format, then you'll need a different kind of program.

What I mean exactly is that there are files that are needed to play dvds. Media player can't just play them out of the box. It needs a certain set of files to do that.
TimP: Thanks I'll check that out.

U-238 have you done a search on the wed? I use a program that does a really good job and I forgot what it is called I'll have to wait tell I get home to get the name for you.:D
I'm still open to ideas. The program TimP recomended works but the video play is extremely choppy/laggy. The one I was using was one from Cyberlink but it kept crashing randomly and I don't know how to fix it.
Uhm... VLC Media Player. I don't understand, are you just missing that or something?
Media Player Classic will also play DVDs.

Yea I've tried both of those and they work to an extent. However playback is extreamely choppy and I don't know about you but I don't like watching movies that look like a slide show.
Then your computer sucks.
I don't what else to tell you. VLC is the best video player on the planet, and if you can't use it, then its not the program thats a problem.
You need to reinstall your DVD player, or download and install the KLite Codec Pack.

Hmm, I'll give that a try. The decoder I used before worked wonderfully so I know it's not the DVD Drive or the comp. I'll keep messing around with it. But if anyone's got any suggestions I'm still open to them.

No it doesn't. Mine does, along with EVERY OTHER WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER I'VE EVER USED.
Mine plays DVDs out of the box too to an extent but the while the video runs great the audio is.. well... in audible. Music plays fine but any speech is all but muted.

VLC was choppy for me as well, same with MPC.
WMP does not play DVD's out of the box. ZDS, you probably had some third-party DVD codec installed, such as PowerDVD or InterWin DVD (They come with most DVD drives).
I was going to suggest downloading a free DVD codec that I had been using, but the site does not seem to exist anymore. :/
What was the codec called?
