What I've got thus far is:

Some random Ozzy stuff, a lot of Metallica, lotta Rammstein, Godsmack, a little Disturbd, and one ACDC and Led Zepplin song. Sorry, their shit all sounds the same.

Pointers? And I swear to god if someone says "Linkin Park", I'm going to punch a kitten in the balls. I'll do it, don't test me.

I have a dastardly confession to make:
I enjoy some metal.
My mom is a big metal fan and I have over heard a lot of it, and I cant deny my interest.
I only know the older stuff though. Twisted Sister is cool, plus most of the stuff GA mentioned. Ill comment further upon my sobriety :<

Well... it depends. What sort of metal? I like power metal because it has an epic flavor to it.

What are you looking for? How heavy is the music? How fast is the pace? How about the lyrics? How are they sung?

Answer those questions for yourself and you can find bands similar to your taste/what you already enjoy.

Metallica, ACDC, Zeppelin, Ozz, all classics, have you tried Iron Maiden or Guns 'N Roses?

Well, if you'd like Genocide, I could direct you to some other types of metal like Melodic Death, Industrial or Neo Classical etc.

I'd recommend Melodic Death Metal Bands like Arch Enemy or Children of Bodom, but I'm not sure if their guttural singing style would be to your liking

Industrial Metal, Techno+rock/Metal, you've got a good one there, Rammstein, you could also try Static-X or Ministry.

Neo Classical is pretty good, it takes Metal and mixes it with classical music stylings, Yngwie Malmsteen or Children of Bodom would be my recommendations here.

Pantera, Slayer, Megadeth, Metal Church and Anthrax may be some good choices, but their sound might be pretty linear like the ones you've mentioned.

And there's always nu-metal, combining other forms of music with metal like rap, reggae etc. Good bands IMO here in this genre, Coal Chamber, KoRn, Deftones perhaps, Mudvayne, Skindred, Disturbed and Limp Bizkit

There's also thrash metal, pretty insane. Strapping Young Lad is good in this genre

If you like Godsmack, y'might bands like Drowning Pool and Fuel

Hurray for Malmsteen!

I'm not big on guttural, but a friend of mine got me into Children of Bodom's Follow the Reaper album.

one ACDC and Led Zepplin song. Sorry, their shit all sounds the same.

What are you, tone deaf?
How about Deep Purple, Hendrix, Rush is interesting, Wizards and Kings are also a unique sound. This is all pretty old stuff of corse.
Oh and Linkin Park, I hate cats! :P

Here's one you should like- System of a down. In fact, some of their songs have lyrics related to the Armenian Genocide. Personally, I think they have the best songs. But they also have sucky songs.

Some other bands you should check out are Staind, Chevelle, Breaking Benjamin, and Trapt.

Cool, some people have mentioned some that I forgot to, like Korn, System of a Down, Rage Against the Machine, and one Drowning Pool song. I quit listening to Drowning Pool after their leader singer ended up dead. No real point, their material is going to fade fast.

Deep Purple, Hendrix, and Rush are "metal" songs like ODB is Anita Baker R&B.

I've got Underoath. :)Underoath is most definitely not fucking metal. They're screamo through-and-through. I hate drawing some kind of pretentious musical lines but metal fans would kill you for lumping an emo-ish band with metal and the emo kids are gonna piss their girl-pants if you lump their music with another genre like metal and the suffix "-core" is not attached.

I'd say depending on how much you want to stray into genre-bending, you could check out Atreyu and Avenged Sevenfold. Atreyu is more hardcore than metal, but the influence is (mostly) there.

Avenged Sevenfold is kind of hit-or-miss. With the bastardization of "Bat Country" on shitty-ass MTV and the radio, people tend to overlook the better songs on the City of Evil CD (such as Strength of the World, a rock epic and Trashed and Scattered, a sweet metal piece.) Moreso, if you don't mind the more deep guttural metal scream you can go with Avenged Sevenfold's older CD's, "Sounding the Seventh Trumpet" and "Waking the Fallen." They're pretty good, though I'm not a fan of that kind of vocal so I tend to prefer "City of Evil."

Oh, Battlecruiser, I swear I should follow through on GA's threat of punching a kitten in the balls for saying Staind is worth listening to. But, hey, to each his own.

Hmm, no one has mentioned Judas Priest. Good metal.

Some random Ozzy stuff, a lot of Metallica, lotta Rammstein, Godsmack, a little Disturbd, and one ACDC and Led Zepplin song. Sorry, their shit all sounds the same.

Sure, so Beethoven and Vivaldi sound the same to? To your ears the sound of waves is like the sound water in your shower. How does rammstein sound like Zeppelin?

Gotta love System Of A Down and Metallica. I also like Rammstein, Pantera, AC/DC, Judas Priest, and so on.

Have any of you guys heard of gothic love metal (H.I.M.)?

Oldie but goodie metal:
#1 Iron Maiden
#2 Ozzy/Sabbath & solo stuff
#3 AC/DC
#4 Def Leppard
#5 Quiet Riot
#6 RATT

@ Toucan - RUSH is a fucking great group, but calling them "metal" is kinda pushing it... Although, back in the day all those hair bands kinda lumped together, so I catch your drift...

Yeah, I'm old.

Nowadays, most of it does sound the same to me as well.
I really enjoy Rage and Ministry though...

He said he would only punch a kitten in the balls if Linkin Park was mentioned. But, in any case, I only listen to a few of their songs. But from what I've heard so far (pun unintended), they sound pretty good.

Hmm, no one has mentioned Judas Priest. Good metal.

Judas Priest is good. I'm surprised that no one has mentioned some of my favorites:

Rob Zombie
Nine Inch Nails
Godsmack

And Mindless Self Indulgence, but they're more...techno industrialish?

My kind of thread buddy.

Check out In Flames, they've released 2 decent cd's for Metal and the latest 'Come Clarity' was one of the best metal CD's I've heard in a long time. Song songs are screamo, others are toned down, check them out dude.

3 Inches of Blood. Now the lead singer sounds like the first singer for AC/DC, with some crazy guitar and lyrics like 'kill the orcs, slay the orcs, destroy the orcs'. These guys I jam to in my car and makes me happy I'm white. These guys are that good. Best song by far is 'Deadly Sinners'. If you want that song add me to msn and I'll ship her your way (If that's legal)?

The Bled - Very screamy. I don't really like these guys but it's something metal.

Death By Stereo - Not bad at all. One of the few bands that sounds as good as they do in person as on the cds. A new cd was out by them called 'death for life' very decent.

Tool - Not sure, but some songs are metalish, and this is a bad you'll love or hate. I don't mind them, but I find all the songs sound the same.

System? They are fine when you first hear of them, but the gang-rape of Sony pretty much killed the poor guys careers. When you work for Sony....read that again SONY. Yet you sing songs about how the President is bad? I'm suprised the CD labels weren't entitled "hypocrites singing songs". The debut cd was still the best produced, but I can see you liking the songs nonetheless.

Really want to try something different? Try 'The Advantage' < There guys are just whoo-hah!

Mudvayne - Opeth - Slayer - In Flames

My friends are huge metal heads, and I get my tastes from them. They play a cover of 'Bullet Ride' by In Flames, and honestly, they're pretty damn good. That's besides the point though..

Well then, anything by Gamma Ray since 1995 (Land Of The Free album onwards), the pre-95 stuff is an aquired taste, but I reckon they are the best band ever. If Dethrone Tyranny does not hook you something is wrong.

Hammerfall
Sonata Arctica
Dragonforce

To a lesser extent

Stratovarius (I like them but have not heard enough to recomend wholeheartedly)
Iron Savior
Helloween

First things first: Hey DC :)

GA, what kind of metal are you looking for in particular? Something fast that you can go 78 miles over the speed limit with or just something like hard rock?

IMO, I'd try (just as a general list - if you want any of this I can send it)
Megadeth - anything from "so far so good so what!"
Metallica - anything from "Kill Em All" or the song "Dyer's Eve"
Ozzy - you can't go wrong with "War Pigs", "Paranoid" or "NIB" - for his solo stuff try his first 2 albums with Randy Rhodes - "Blizzard of Ozz" and "Diary of a Madman"
Iron Maiden - the best of album "Edward The Great"
Guns N Roses - "Appetite for Destruction" album
Whiplash - the album "Sit, Stand, Kneel, Prey"
MD.45 - album "The Craving" (2004 remix/remaster)
Pantera - the best of album "Far Beyond The Great Southern Cowboys Vulgar Hits"; I'd also listen to the album "A Vulgar Display of Power" (particularly the song "Fucking Hostile")
Motorhead - the songs "Ace Of Spades", "Iron Fist"

I'll add more when I get a chance

Hey Link, WB! And thanks for the pointers, me and my lime colored wires will be working overtime trying to catch up. Otherwise, TD, I already mentioned Godsmack. You freak.

And yes, I'd like any good songs as soon as possible. It'll save me the trouble of just downloading 40 songs from each band and culling them.

Something like that would work too - I'm a big Metallica fan and all of their concert home videos are very intense and IMO get you into the music better than just listening to the record - I have many of them that I have ripped from my DVDs and I could send some too cuz their presentation is damn good

Gamma Ray is mandatory. I finally got my hands on the album No World Order and "Dethrone Tyranny" is hot.

Hammerfall
Sonata Arctica
Dragonforce
Hammerfall's Glory to the Brave album is a great example of power metal. Chapter V is great too. "Hammer of Justice" feels like their older stuff and it's addictive.

Know nothing about Sonata Arctica. :(

I'm still trying to get into Dragonforce. I'm sure it'll have to grow on me like Iron Maiden took some getting used to.

Stratovarius (I like them but have not heard enough to recomend wholeheartedly)
Iron Savior
Helloween
Older Stratovarius is hot. Elements was a pretentious album. :/

Iron Savior kicks ass.

Helloween is weird stuff, but you gotta love it.

Falconer's Sceptre of Deception is a fantastic album. "Pledge for Freedom" says it all.

Meh.

Metallica wasn't "torn apart" as you say. They're still together, James, Lars, Kirk, Robert.
System of a Down isn't bad, it's strange to me how many hardcore heavy metal fans hate anything that is even a bit melodic.

Pantera's alot like any other heavy metal band you'll find, solos, crunchy riffs, and extensive use of the Pentatonic scale. They're alright, but I wouldn't call them maniacs.

I don't know if it really counts as metal, but Duality by Slipknot is a cool song. The rest of their songs ain't really worth it.

If you don't like AC/DC, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath or Led Zeppelin, I don't really think Metal is your kind of music.

Where to begin....

The Agony Scene - The Darkest Red
I stole my freinds iPod so I could listen to this song, it's catchy.

As I Lay Dying - Forever
AILD is quite wonderful, they're headlining SOTU this year.

Between The Buried And Me - Alaska
Saw them live, passed out.

Bleeding Through - Love Lost In A Hail Of Gunfire, or Revenge I Seek
^^They were there with BTBAM, they have a new CD out but it isn's as good I think.

Children Of Bodom - Needled 24/7
Alexi Laiho is god. 'Nuff said.

Despised Icon - Their sunset will never charm us
Great inward scream.

Dragonforce - Through the fire and the flames
The best guitar players. Ever. Don't even try to compare. They make Alexi Laiho look like Tom Delong.

Every Time I Die - I've Been Gone A Long Time
^^Saw them live too, they really outdid themselves. Rockin the cowbell.

God Forbid - Antihero
Black guys can play metal too.

Haste The Day - When Everything Falls
Christian metal.

HORSE The Band - Birdo
These guys are hilarious, and their keyboardist looks like napolean dynomite.

Kittie - Into The Darkness
They're all chicks if you can beleive it.

Lamb Of God - Now You've Got Something To Die For
They're very political but I dont like the lyrical patterns (or lack thereof.)

Norma Jean - Liarsenic: Creating A Universe Of Discourse, or Bayonetwork: Vultures In Vivid Color, OR Memphis Will Be Laid To Waste
They are very.... chaotic.

Slipknot - The Heretic Anthem
How can you leave out slipknot?

Trivium - A Gunshot to the Head Of Trepidation
They're awesome, but they don't scream in their new cd... old stuff is still good.

Unearth - The Great Dividers
I don't like them as much... but they're still good metal.

Magmaniac thats some pretty kick ass music right there :D

Okay here it goes..

As I Lay Dying: 94 Hours and Forever
Damn good band

Between The Buried And Me: Mordecai, Alaska, Backwards Marathon
Crazy technical guitarwork. And magmaniac you saw them live? lucky...

Bleeding Through: Love Lost In A Hail Of Gunfire
Old stuff rules hot keyboardist (marta) :D

HORSE The Band: Birdo, Lord Gold Throneroom, Taken By Vultures
Self professed nintendocore band

Norma Jean: Bayonetwork, Memphis Will Be Laid To Waste, Characturantula
Very crazy, guitars get annoying after a while

Cattle Decapitation: Success Is, No Future
Vegans, very ironic name

Zao: My Love My Love
Pretty good band really

The Human Abstract: Nocturne
Really good band, technical guitars somewhat like BTBAM but not that crazy

Every Time I Die: Ebolorama, I Been Gone A Long Time
Really good live band ive heard

Converge: Eagles Become Vultures, Black Cloud, Thaw, Concubine, The Saddest Day
Crazy band been in a few fights at shows... Pretty much my favorite band next to The Blood Brothers

Yeah the concert was $20 for Haste The Day, Every Time I Die, BTBAM, and Bleeding Through.
It was fucking insane, a place built for 200 people with at least 400 people in there, I was lucky enough to get there early (if you consider waiting in line for two hours luck) that I was in the front the whole time. The guy from ETID screamed in my face.
I passed out from heat and lack of oxygen after BTBAM (They didn't play alaska OR mordecai, those bastards) but Bleeding Through woke me up and I made my way back to the front and Marta signed my ticket afterwards.

I don't like Gospel much (Randy Travis, Vince Gill and a few others are pretty undeniable. :D ), and I sure as hell don't like that shit about worshipping some asshole whose sole qualities were pride and hunger for power.

Rammstein may wander around a bit in that regard, but they're obviously more geared towards shockrock and far more dimensonal than sycophantism.

I didn't hear of them until "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective", which features his buddy's secret lab stuffed in a basement of a Cannibal Corpse concert. They're part of the shockrockers that do the whole "I'm raping the dead, I'm violating your sister", etc. etc. sort of like Marilyn Manson except they don't have any limits of decency or general point. Most people that listen to these kinds of bands are fatasses that imagine themselves Navy Seals or have severely sociopathic tendencies.

Some Grind bands are really good and some suck. The good one's are bands like The Locust, The Number 12 Looks Like You, Holy Molar...the old one's like Napalm Death and of course Anal Cunt. Listen to the Number 12 Looks Like You. They are a cross between Grind, Metal, and Screamo. Anyways, Mastodon and BTBAM arent Grind. More like Death/Technical Metal.

Holocaust
09-09-2006, 7:46 PM
Death Metal and Screamo are good, they are melodic and I can actually tell which song is played by which band, bands like Arch Enemy and Children' of Bodom. There's a subtle difference in sound and harmony if you compare a band like Arch Enemy to a band like Carcass or Cannibal'

I can't tell which Grind band is which, all I hear are blast beats, double bass drumming, throating over a mic and trem picking a downtuned string continuously. Lyrics about blood and guts aren't really that appealing either.

Industrial metal combines metal with techno/trance sounds and beats i.e. Rammstein and Static-X

Huh, IMO Rammstein sounds as much like NIN as Metallica sounds like AC/DC. Not a huge difference, but quite significant all the same if you're calling them the same genre. Meh.

I've got this bookmarked at my UserCP for a while and only now felt like skimming through all these pages... :)
What I've got thus far is:

Some random Ozzy stuff, a lot of Metallica, lotta Rammstein, Godsmack, a little Disturbd, and one ACDC and Led Zepplin song. Sorry, their shit all sounds the same.

Woah, you've hitted my favourites' jackpot. Almost. ;) Add a lil' Korn, Fear Factory, Rob Zombie, Guano Apes, Dover (perhaps tending to punk), Anthrax, Manowar, Rage Against The Machine, Faith No More, NightWish, Sonata Arctica, Within Temptation and be sure to take out the Led Zeppelin (maybe Stairway to Heaven escapes below my 'radar limits', even though not too sure if nicely).

Still like a few tunes from MotorHead, like the classic Ace of Spades, although I don't hear'em much nowadays.
Sepultura was also around at some point, but not currently and for a few years now apart from a few old tunes of theirs.

Pointers? And I swear to god if someone says "Linkin Park", I'm going to punch a kitten in the balls. I'll do it, don't test me.

Provided it's not this kittens' balls, go ahead. :P (Aka, I like a few of their initial tunes.)

Metallica, ACDC, Zeppelin, Ozz, all classics, have you tried Iron Maiden or Guns 'N Roses?
...
Pantera, Slayer, Megadeth, Metal Church and Anthrax may be some good choices, but their sound might be pretty linear like the ones you've mentioned.

I 'hate' MegaDeth on the account of copy-catting Metallica to a certain extent. And only a few tunes from Iron Maiden are swell. The rest is repetitive when ya hear carefully. And Guns N' Roses are only Metal if ya solely consider their 1st album, which is the one that I like from'em.

What are you, tone deaf?
How about Deep Purple, Hendrix, Rush is interesting, Wizards and Kings are also a unique sound. This is all pretty old stuff of corse.

No, just reasonable. ;p
Anyway, I wouldn' consider Hendrix in the Metal classification. Good, heavy Rock perhaps would get a yeah but definitely not Metal.

Sure, so Beethoven and Vivaldi sound the same to? To your ears the sound of waves is like the sound water in your shower. How does rammstein sound like Zeppelin?

Read it again. In my assertion of the thing he was mentioning that AC/DC and Led Zeppelin look all alike after ya hear a couple of their musics.

Now I know what I've forgotten (so far). Their Calling Doctor Love (along with some other band, not sure if Korn) and Schism tunes are great, imho.

And I agree with the part that System of a Down lost their spunk vibe recently (last album perhaps?).

Huh, IMO Rammstein sounds as much like NIN as Metallica sounds like AC/DC. Not a huge difference, but quite significant all the same if you're calling them the same genre. Meh.

Wtf!?! Comparing Metallica with AC/DC? At least they make range shifts within their music, just not the repeat it all over again with some extra sprinkles of flower on it.
Not too sure on Rammstein and NIN but from what have heard of the latest so far they aren't that bad.

I dont like Godsmack.. Much more into the newer stuff like Children Of Bodom, Lamb Of God, and stuff like Norma Jean and The Dillinger Escape Plan. Also Metallica.

You really can't tell the difference between bands then, but that's your op.

Like Basan noted, Metallica and AC/DC, can't be compared. Metallica's vocals are different and alot of songs are thrashy with quick paced drumming/DBD (See Master of Puppets, Dyer's Eve, Seek and Destroy). AC/DC, has a more happy tone (See Thunderstruck, HTH and BIB) and leans more toward rock and roll.

If you compare NIN to Rammstein, you're saying Meta' doesn't really sound like 'DC. Perhaps it's more liable to your point if you listen to a majority of each band's songs.

Another example, Metallica has shifted genres of rock gradually over the years. Kill 'em was their first album, thrashy metal, very thrashy, full of shred solos and high distortion with almost screams for vocals. Ride The Lightning, solos became more melodic (Fade To Black, Ride The Lightning etc.) but the thrash metal feel was still there. Up until around 1996, they shifted into a genre which I like to call, "Country Metal". If you compare a song released from that period from Metallica such as "Unforgiven II" to an earlier song such as "Hit The Lights", you find no or very little similarities at all.

Classifying all Rock/Metal bands as "Rock" is like saying Marilyn Manson and Cream belong to the same stream or Venom is the same as the 'Stones, there is a significant difference.

All streams of rock do not sound the same.

If you compare those two to Britney Spears, Ludwig von Beethoven and Miles Davis, you will see that they are in fact reasonably alike.
