but how versed in gundom "universe" do we have to be. I've only seen Gundam wing (although i did watch ALL of it)

Howabout we play a covertly trained MS squad composed entirely of NEWTYPEs(In the original Gundam universe, NEWTYPEs are gifted individuals with extraordinary piloting abilities) who are in training on a SIDE colony. At the end of our training(near the outbreak of the war) the SIDE is attacked by The Principality of Zeon and we get split up. Some of us are captured and some get away. Eventually, Many of the captured NEWTYPEs end up joining Zeon and so, friends find themselves at war with each other.

In the original Gundam universe, both the Federation and Zeon were painted in a relatively similar light. That way, viewers could pick who they liked best. Zeon was idealistically right, while the federation commanders were much more ethical. By letting RPers pick their side, it would spice things up major!

...anyway.... thats this girls romanticised idea... hehe
