Unfortunetly I'll dissappoint prolly a lot of people, this isn't a moderator bashing thread or a funny article.
It turns out that In 3 months I have helped a lot of people, also enforced and explained rules to a lot of members in a local forum (inaccesible from people that aren't on my ISP). Yesterday I was engry at nub users, explaining stuff in the forum chat when the admin poped up and sayed ":tup:Ill make you a mod, but lets see when" :D I got so happy, the forum is generally crappy (a lot of flame/spam) and there are like... 2 active mods battling the spaming power of about 100 very active users. I think that boosts my chanses of getting promoted. I've been planing to write a convincing PM applycation to the admin but thats where you come in place. Should I reach the admin for more info, being impatient but showing intrest, or keep it quiet, waiting patient?
I am also wondering how do ppl accept the work of a moderator, please unfocus from the mod/member "relationship" in WB :P(its civilised here, but you havent been in the place im reffering to :o )
Damn it, im so exited I can't make a decent thread with a clear meaning.. and the typos..

first off all, there's really nothing exciting about being a mod. you dont feel like some other person when you get it, nothing magical happens in the form of rainbows and pretty ponies.
You don't apply. The administrator calls you, not the other way around. don't send an application form or anything because you'll likely be wasting your time. What the hell would you say on it anyways? "I helped a bunch of people!!!"? Come on.
Hell when i got mod i didn't even know beforehand. that mac-loving fool just IMed me. =\

nothing magical happens in the form of rainbows and pretty ponies. Shure, I knew that.. :shiftyl::shiftyr: not even a pinch of magic?

Well i have better motives than "I've helped a lot", the other moderators are technitians working for the 'net provider company they dont have much time for bullshit, while I am a lowlife jerk sitting infront of the computer most of the day (but no one knows that).
Kinda think abou' it ill get a lot of bashing from the members, its going to be super duper fun in the begining :shiftyl::shiftyl:

Actually, being a mod is horrible, seeing as how you sell your soul and your firstborn to AJ from the moment you get the teal screenname. But... if you want to be a mod, you're in for a ficken long wait. I've been here for almost three years and I'm still not a mod, despite the fact that I'm made of cotton candy and other succulent cavity-provoking materials :P
Bite me :D
ZDS just because you didn't have any fun that no one else does.
Being staff can be a lot of fun, if not somewhat thankless.

oh, im sure it can be fun, what i'm saying is that when you get mod it's not like you're a different person or anything. you don't feel different or anything. It's not all it's hyped up to be but i guess it's still a blast. :D
you misunderstood me. :)
Ok, maybe. But you did come off as a little strange in that post :p

Ya know... asking or telling people you want to be a mod just diminishes your chances. I can think of plenty of other people who can do a better job than you. Being a mod at another place likely won't help either, I've moderated around 4 forums, and administrated 1, so far and I'm probably hovering around the bottom of the list for promotions.
Remember folks, spamming is bad. Being the spam king is worse.

In reply to the original post, you should just sit back and let the admin appoint you if and when they're ready to. Don't hamper them with, "When will I be a moderator" messages, as this will likely work against you actually being promoted.

Yeah - your best bet is just to sit there and do absolutely nothing, and if/when you actually get the invite, don't be too proud or arrogant.
I'm not sure how your forum works, but generally, if the admin doesn't like you, he can just break you back down to a normal member as soon he wants.
But from my brief stay as a moderator here (what was it, two weeks? :D), I can say it was pretty fun. I mean, there's the secret staff forum, which quickly destroys whatever image you may have had of them beforehand :).

Sometimes it's great! Sometimes it just hurls. All depends on what's going on in the forums and how your day went.

The mods have their own private staff forum where they discuss us, the members. That and they have a teal colored user name. And they have some extra privileges, such as the power to ban, and move threads. Basically that's it.

whats so good about being Mod? I see nothing Superior about it.
That was like people want to become Politician, but the true is that everyone hate government.
The mod is here to regulate the rule, but in the same time they are breaking it far worse than us. They are corrupted (majority, some of them are nice) , whats the point to join and becoming one of the them?

Mmm... just pointing out that he's talking about being a mod at another forum; not this one (WarBoards)... Some of your comments seem to indicate that not all of you are clear on that.

... Which is not so secret now since that you've mentioned it in the ML :P

rofl, I wonder what would have happened if I've applyed for a mod here...:)

Actually its not going to be abig deal, I realised my chances are verry slim infact.. the admin hasnt promoted 2-years-active-respected-users he doesent have a stable motive to promote a 3 months "old" user:mad:
im pretty sure aj knows who to upmod.
on a sidenote, i'd be a mod by now if i would not be so randomly around. if i interpreted aj correctly ;)

Being a mod isn't as glorious as many would seem it to be and there are times where the staff basically don't really get along well with each other that makes the rivalry between GA and PC99 look like a "Barney: The Purple Dinosaur" episode.
It can also be a total pain in the ass, at times. Though if you don't mind making the right decisions at a moments notice when shit starts hitting the fan and you are the only one available, then the reward of doing a job well don can be well worth it.

Well... if u really want to be a mod at that site act as you said u did before... help people out explain to them what theyt don't know try to convince others not to flame or spam(without doing that yourself)...and try to do this in as many threads possible so the admin notices you...PM him about it is a bad idea...

Only in your eyes DC. There weren't staff rivalries when I was on staff, we weren't out to get one another. Sure, we had disagreements over some moderation issues, but they were pretty much petty arguments that didn't ever turn into anything big.
When I was on staff, we didn't talk solely about all of the members or something, the staff forum is pretty much a place where we discussed larger issues -- StarCraft.org to do stuff, ORG network issues, downtimes, recent spamming trends, Staff Members leaving, April Fools 2007, etc, etc.

This snagged my eyes... only such a beforehand planning could result in such previous awesome prank results (read, not solely speaking of April's Fools pranks). ;)
I only got two things out from being a mod:
1. You get a fair amount of respect and ... uh, forum "cred". I'm an oldie, ex-mod and so can fairly consider myself to be at least a head or two superior to most of you lesser creatures... *cough*. :P
2. You can sell staff-forum secrets. Or at least try.

AJ is 8 years old :D
I thought that was obvious based on his post quality.
Even 8 years old should've learned to use PCs. AJ can't be older than 3-4. Tops.

I simply can't wait to see this thread closed due to implicitly dissing Mac's out. And you know who's about to hit the nail, right?

Oh, come on now children, play nice. Being a mod is a lot of fun.
And for the record, I had no idea that I was being made moderator until AJ IMed me. It was pretty cool. I accepted immediately of course, and I don't regret it at all.
Plus, the staff forum is a lot of fun. Gossip Gossip Gossip behind the member's backs, hahaha. Oh the jokes we can make about you when you can't hear them! Just kidding, of course.
