View Full Version : "Members" Members Lounge

I'm sure there's a reason why this doesn't exist, but I just thought I'd mention the idea of having a "Members Lounge" for "forum elders". It could be a private forum for active, long term forum members. I don't think we should have rules in that forum since it *should* only have dedicated members in it that know better than to spam, but rather we'd have guidelines such as "no links to favorite sites" or "no generic internet parodies". The forum could be more for what Black Ice outlined in his thread (http://www.warboards.org/showthread.php?t=18888)about what Warboards used to be like - a place where members actually talked about things they did and what they cared about.
Access to the forum could be based on something like "Has been a member for over 1 year" or "Must be nominated by X members and X moderators". Of course, the forum would be invisible to anyone not allowed in it, and we wouldn't talk about it in the open to prevent rioting newbies from demanding access. But like I said before, I'm sure there's a reason why we don't have a private "members" forum. I just thought I'd share an idea I had =P
Wouldn't it detract from the current Member's Lounge? :/

It could ostracize people. Hate to sound bigheaded, but I think I'd have the adquate criteria, but I'm pretty sure people would see me as too 'young' in terms of the site.
On the other hand, it could be cool. It does seem a bit 'us' and 'them' though.

Thanks for the idea, BMB, but I'm inclined to argue against it.

Yes. Being that the Members Lounge is predominantly made up of regulars anyway, creating a separate forum strictly for the regulars would essentially just hide how active our forums really are to any new members that might be considering joining.
It could ostracize people.
Agreed. It's just another way of making new members feel inferior; "You can't post in our forum. Only veterans like me can!"
Additionally, the fantasy that this forum could actually be kept secret is just a pleasant dream. The chances of someone casually commenting about it, or a "recent member" explaiming, "Hey! Where did this new forum come from?!" are almost certain.

That was entirely NOT spam!! SPAM is something unrelated to the thread.. I simply stated that i was in agreement and it is the worst idea ever. The idea of a "comunity" is to bring people together, not drive them apart.....

I love to alienate people (:P), but I prefer to do it in a slightly more subtle way then posting a giant thread for everyone to see.

Regardless, simply stating "worst idea ever" cannot be construed as constructive, mmm?

I'm against this idea because it'll create a schism between forum people who are new and veterans. And, while it would be kind of cool to have a forum for the "elite", so to speak, people would feel left out. On the flip side, they'd be trying hard to become a veteran to gain access.
It has advantages and disadvantages, but I currently think it has more bad then good. Great idea though.

Yeah, I suppose you're all right. While there would be some benefits from having it, the negative side effects would outweight what it's worth.

I have been here a while and on principle wouldn't use it. It sceams elitist and makes the noobs not want to be here.....

the clan I'm in has there own forurm, there is a public forum and there's a member forum. It works out fine. But here's the deal we are paying for the forum and we pay does and that's why we have the member's forum. So unless Warboards want to have peeps start paying, then I don't see any reason for the members forum.
with clans or other invite-only communities its good to let fans to the forums but only let the clan members come to the member forums. wb.org is not a clan forum, though, nor a paysite.

Coming from one of the main people who wanted the 5 character limit removed, I'm surprised with your behavior Schwitzer =P
Anyhow, I'd like to not go with this idea, but perhaps make the current ML a little bit more smartness interactive? I cannot stand all of the idiots who come in with advertisements, or can't properly use good english gramamr despite English being their main language... bah maybe I'm just a little TOO intolerant :/
It's our general chat area, hence there will always be people coming in posting more free spirited threads, etc.
There's not too much that can be done about that, besides kindly reminding these users that we expect a bit more from them, but we must keep in mind that excessive rule enforcement simply deprieves the forum from a sense of fun. That's no good either.

And this is basically one of the reasons why I was against the banning spammers mumbo jumbo to begin with. There were other people that required more immediate attention than the spammers.

Spam under certain situations can be funny. Most funny threads probably count as spam, from the other perspective.
I'd say the bigger issue is flaming / insults which crop up.
Meanwhile, back on topic - if people want a more private site all they have to do is found one that you can only join by invite - get in contact with someone who can write good HTML / nick good forum code and then send pms to the people you want to join.
Examples: Shakuras and StarCraftopedia. Both are run by members of Warboards or SC.org. They're open to anyone, but coding a password is easy enough. That's what I'd reccomend. I'd hate to be coming here and thinking 'I wish I could get in that other forum.' In all likelihood it'd be no more interesting - we'd just have people wanting to be there because it's there - which removes the whole point.
Staff Forums... well, if you want to be a member of staff I guess you have to post consistently on topic, keep your language to a high standard, avoid swearing, know what you're talking about, be humble enough to admit defeat, welcoming to newbies and come down hard on vets who should know better... and even then it's not guaranteed. Chances are if you want to be a member of staff you shouldn't be one, unless your reason for being one is to help the website.

I agree with most of that, but swearing is a bit of a blurred line. Sometimes, swearing in context is actually more mature than trying to duck it and some of the staff swear a little bit. Not a criticism, it's only human :)

The only point I would argue here is that Starcraftopedia is like a giant Warboards.org bitchfest. Somewhat like what Shakuras used to be, although I've not visited there for awhile. Then again, I doubt either hold a candle to what BSCOrg used to be like.
Actually, I'm considering redoing my kupatrix forums soon, what with phpBB3 out soon. It would be very simple to setup a more private forum system, if thats what people would like.
I just don't think its a good idea for Warboards :p

private forum on warboards isn't going to happen..
and i'd rather not have any push anywhere for some private ORG-type forum. It just detracts.
And as to the 'other' forums, whatever. They can do as they choose, I have no argument with that.

Hehe. "Come bitch about AJ over here!"
I kid! A private ORG Forum for any reason is just a bad idea, whether here or anywhere else.
Although, you know, in the future when we get all huge and ginormous, we could have a donater's forum or something xD

Hmm, I don't think a donators forum is quite as bad an idea as an invite only forum. I'm still not sure what the point would be in either case. I assume they would both be general forums, so why do we need another one?

I'm talking like way far in the future when we've got like 800+ active members on all the time =P

If we ever put the donators idea in motion, there will be better incentives than only having an exclusive forum.

You did have a female on the staff. What more do you want?
Besides the WB Calendar was nothing more than a prank conceived by Schwitzer two years ago.

The irony is there could already be a 'members' members forum, which is hidden and kept secret succesfully, which none of us know anything about.... and the patrons of it are just laughing at our little discussion.
Sorta like the Freemasons, or something...
Edit: there *is* a conspiracy... look at how Black.Ice sidetracked us into talking about nudity... and none of the moderators stopped him!
ZOMG!11!!Con-flipping-spiracy!!!!1111
Further Edit: StarCraftopedia is mainly a bitch about WB, I just shouted at them a little over there in a hope that they'll give up.... unlikely.
But Shakuras is just a happy little site with a couple've members that post maps and have random jokes... and a guy called 'The Dutch Jelle' whose purpose it is to post self-proclaimed 'Pointless Polls', at the frequency of once a week.
