You mightn't have heard of this RTS, it isn't very well known, but this baby is beautiful!
It's pretty old, off the top of my head I believe 2002, but I might be wrong. It doesn't run on resources, but on towns that you conquer, and you recruit the villagers as soldiers, which in the end run out, forcing you to conquer more towns.
You play either as romans, germanic tribes or egyptians. The strategical depth comes from the terrain, heavy infantry can't cross marshes, pike men and cavalry can't enter forest, soldiers in forests are invisble except if you have scouts are on of your own groups standing there, archers can fire further from cliffs.
Soldiers are there in large amounts, you control them in groups of 60 (or 32 for the germanic dudes) and some have special abilities like legionnaires can form those turtle things with their shields.
I could rant on about this for ages, but I'll shut up now :D

Has anyone played this game? It doesn't have multiplayer but the campaign is a real challenge. If you haven't, I highly recommend it!

Praetorians? I love that game!

I remember on the main menu that they had a multiplayer option. Probably not as good battle.net.

Recruiting? Wow, the only other game I've heard with that way to create units is Battle Realms. Seeing all the descriptions you give, this game must've needed a lot of micro.

I'll buy it if I see it.

I played Praetorians. It's quite realistic. Except for the fact that 200 people can't fit into 3 houses which are considered villiges. The game itself was well made. I didn't found a single glitch. After finishing the tut I went straight to skirmish were I has bruttaly beaten by barbarians. The strategic part of the game was very cool. Played for 1 week and a half and I realized I was better of playing Gettysburg. Which is even more strategic and even more realistic.

Looks like a crappy version of Rome Total War. I have it, it kicks ass. Buy it.

It pretty much is Rome Total War, but all Real time, no TBS.
It doesn't look as good, by far, but it doesn't look offensively bad or lame.

Rome Total War isn't TBS. It has real time to. It has campaign map (TBS) and battle map (or somethin' like that). It has a very little bit of RPG O.o Your heirs and faction leaders evolve if you win battles/govern cities/make diplomatic agreements.
