View Full Version : Did they REALLY have to perform a study on this?

Forced Prostitution Causes Emotional Scars (http://www.cnn.com/2006/HEALTH/06/28/trafficked.women.reut/index.html)
Is that a joke? They had to perform a study to figure that out? What is this, dumbass psychology day? That's like performing a study to prove that leaving a fighting dog with a small child is dangerous to the child's health.
No shit, sherlock. Thank you.

*Doc Cathy Zimmerman reads that and says*
Good idea! Alright you lazy London students, get you butts up and we have some research to do!

I would have thought it would be self explanitory. Who would willingly agree to be a part of that study?

Dare I say it? *snicker*
Prostitutes?

Now, that would be an interesting study: does being forced to perform a survey cause emotional stress?

Yes, yes of course it does!
If your'e Doc Cathy Zimmerman...

Don't ask me where that came from, I really have no idea.
I think they should do this study on forced male prostitution. I'll sacrifice my body for the greater good. Rich MILFS with forcing me to do unimaginable acts....such torture.

More like the creepy old man down the street... or his friend's 90-year-old wife.
I hope old, sagging tits are the last thing you see before you fall asleep tonight :P

Wow, this thread went off topic faster than a... very fast thing.
I'd like to know how many people lie about their embarrasing surname to their friends. Well, not lie, but mislead, if you catch my drift?
I think its obvious that forced prostitution would cause mental and emotional scarring. Why did they need to study it? Did they say "Ok girls, we're going to .... to see how it affects you." :shiftyr:

In this case, common sense says that but until it was scientifically studied it wasn't necessarily "true." Popular Science actually did an article (http://www.popsci.com/popsci/science/02d3b3d795a6a010vgnvcm1000004eecbccdrcrd.html) on their site about various confirmations of "common sense" that scientists performed studies for.

You know guys in the field of science you can't just say "well that's obvious" about something and not do a study on it, if we did that half of science would be based on assumptions, even ones that are obviously correct.

Have they done a study to confirm that the sky is blue? Because this is in the same category.

However they may actually be wondering "why" the obvious occurs. Using the example which Nuts thought up, the scientists actually may wonder why the sky is blue. Except if its very cloudy or at twilight. ;)
Most of the ones mentioned on that site were quite funny, including the illustrations. Thanks for showing me.
The main point is the nature of what they were studying. Presumably, they would have asked ones which this already happened to. But if I was one, I would not want to be asked just for some science survey.

Actually, they have brought up many theories of why the sky appears blue. Then, using smaller comparison models, performed several experiments to prove their theory was indeed correct. You can google it up, I just did but I was too lazy to copy / paste so it is there ;)

How do you define a "mental scar"? Morkeliph would have a field day with this.

Yes, but was the color researched, or the cause? If they researched the color, and my tax dollars paid for that study,....well, I wouldn't be surprised.

I think the point is not the fact it causes mental scarring (that's a givin) but the fact that it's "on par" with that of torture victoms (yes... i forgot how to spell it. just now. brain fart. oh noes!!! wait... is o right? must study this...) but yea.
People are stupid sometimes.

I think you could do both actually. The smaller experiments involve the separation of light into it's composed colours and then they could determine (due to the wavelength frequency of the light) that the colour which was reflected was indeed blue. It probably has been done, but it shouldn't be that expensive.
Have they done a study to confirm that the sky is blue? Because this is in the same category.
You do a study for that every time you look up.
The sky being blue is a physical phenomenon. It is not researched through studies but rather experiments and theories. (Or theories and experiments if you like.) Psychology on the other hand, IS researched through studies.
There are equally many examples of studies which have shown that the obvious is false.
