View Full Version : WB lingo

No idea if this has been done, but I thought I should do it anyways.
This is a place where I ask all the members that feel like contributing, to do so. What I mean is that, us n00bs to WB, would like to eventually know the lingo and acronyms that are used in WB (WarBoards). Just so that new members will feel at home and be able to understand the ancients of WB. It will be greatly appreciated for those that do get frusterated at other members for bugging us n00bs and insulting us because of an asked question, that older members are thinking that it's common knowledge. It doesn't make us feel at home here at WB when placed in that situation and it would be nice to have more members join due to acceptance of other members. Notice I didn't say don't have fun bashing n00bs, because that's fun, but do give them the respect they deserve as a user.
P.S. First thread! Whoo hoo!
hehe, sorry Dragon, but it's in the wrong place, by about twenty miles :)
Good idea though. I'll edit this to say something useful after the thread is moved.

Are there any specific acronyms that have confused you?

occ and some others, but just a thread for helping new members really.

OOC: Is a roleplaying term, which stands for out-of-character. Usually when you're making remarks that aren't related to roleplaying, you put OOC just to let people know you're not continuing the story.

These aren't "WB" lingo words, they are internet terms in general. Here, I'll get a short list set up for you.
OOC: Out of Character
IC: In Character (the opposite of OOC)
IMO: In My Opinion (can also be IMHO for "honest" or "humble" opinion -- that had me confused forever, lol)
OP: Not used here as much as other forums, but stands for 'original post' or 'original poster'
QFT: Quoted for Truth
FTW: For the win, or For the wise
I assume you know the basic abbreviations: lol, brb, wtf, omg
TinyDancer

Some lesser-known acronyms used on WB (warboards)
FTW: For the win
FTL: For the lose, naturally
QFT: Quoted for truth
IM(H)O: In my (humble) opinion
GG: Good game
If any other ones confuse you, I'd recommend just going to www.urbandictionary.com (http://www.urbandictionary.com) so that you don't get laughed at when you ask for the definition.
Edit: Dammit Veeger, you posted at the same time as me. :P
Edit again: Okay, 4 minutes before, but you posted while I was typing.
Can someone please define "LOLZ."

Can someone please define "LOLZ."
Not possible, sorry.
"Love Our Lord Zealot?"
Kingscrab

"Love Our Lord Zealot?" That made me laugh! :P
My favorite WB lingo item:
IBTL!
(Come on... Someone had to say it...) :D
Not possible, sorry.
"Love Our Lord Zealot?"
Thanks, that finally has cleared my doubts... and only after what? 2 years? :rolleyes:
Btw UMSLDragon, imao is the exact contrary thing to imho (read, a for arrogant). I also trust that you already know what lmao, rofl and lawl mean as well, yes? ;)
Edit add:
My favorite WB lingo item:
IBTL!
(Come on... Someone had to say it...) :D
And not with the "in before the lock" thing again... :P

Or the always 'wuvable', gtfo (http://acronyms.tfd.com/gtfo). Any divergences about that definition, come closer and I'll explain it thoroughly (in non polite form). ;)

As GrassDragon posted, that's from a bash quote... it's not really a BF joke.
Oh, and to make that comment relevant to this thread, BF stands for BlizzForums, where the founding members of this site originated from.

Although I have a feeling that per capita it's much more popular among BFers than among the internet populace in general. ;)

Greetings, new member of the Warboards forum. I, the great and powerful forum elder with 4250 posts and membership for over two years, have the following bits of wisdom for you in your quest to dominate the boards:
1) "Don't feed the Fenguin" - this is one of the popular welcoming phrases given to new members. What's a Fenguin you ask? You might think of it as our forum mascot - and there really is a member called Fenguin.
2) Only the admins and mods can make drunk threads. If anyone else does it, it's considered spam. Why? Nobody knows, some say its magic.
3) Generic topics such as "post a picture of yourself" have been re-created too many times on this forum, as well as any game based threads such as "_________ the person above you" or anything similar. Also, don't post a topic asking other people to generate the content for the thread (for example dont post saying "Let's see what everyone has to say about ___________") unless you include some quality content in your original post.
In short, any post that might be found on any other forum (as in it is a common forum thread) has probably already been posted here at warboards.
4) We've already had a few hundred threads asking:
"How do I make a WCIII map"
"How do I connect to battle.net"
"Should I buy WoW"
And other stupid, repeatable questions like that.
5) All your base are belong to us.

Let's not forget username acronyms. For instance, I am normally called DC (short for Demon_Child, of course) around these parts, Black.Ice is usually known as B.I., ZeroDarkStar is ZDS, bluemicrobyte is BMB ect... ;)

Schwitz = Schwitzer
GA = Genocide Alive
Balls = Nuts . . . :shiftyl: :shiftyr:
PC = Protoss Chicky
And I have, on occasion, been referred to as 'V'
There's also stfu (shut the fuck up)
Really? I thought that actually meant "stuff you." :shiftyr: That's pretty bad - I've actually been swearing, but not knowing that I was swearing.

Cool, I've made additions to that ;)

Yoda, I didn't mean in referrence to that God-awful movie. Usually, only GA refers to me as 'V' when he's quoting me in the IR (Intellectual Roundtable).

The full conversation is irrelevant.
rlys are a collection of phrases used depending on context, and sometimes in succession.
