View Full Version : I bought a hybrid
Ok, so it's not a true Hybrid, but I can feel pretty good about it. It's the new 2007 Chevrolet Avalanche, and it's E85 Ethanol Flex capable, plus it has the new 4-8 fuel saving engine. Anyway, I bought it Sunday, and I'm having a few things done to it, so I don't actually have pictures yet, so here's a stock photo till then.

It is seriously sweet. It rides like a Cadillac, but it's taller than most pickups. I've got the full compliment of XM radio, OnStar and Bose stereo. I'm beaming from ear to ear I tell ya. :)
And just remember, I tried to be good to the environment, but I can't help it if Florida doesn't have any ethanol stations....yet.

Congrats on your purchase! When I initially read the title I thought to myself "Have fun spending the next five years paying off those batteries."
It's nice to see though that the new Avalanches no longer have those ugly grey plastic fenders.

You'll note that mine has very little "tacked on shit." ;) It was changed drastically for 2007. Otherwise I wouldn't have bought it. And I'm rolling on 20" rims too, how do they say it...pimpin?

Wow, that's pretty cool. Nice ride. It's cool that you've got a Flex, but like you said, there's no ethanol stations in Florida. Maybe in a few years, eh?
Nuts be da pimp, yo.

Unfortunately no. But my company pays for my fuel, so that's a nice trade-off, especially the last couple years.

It's not like it's a Hummer or anything. It's the nicest vehicle I have ever bought for myself, but I work my ass off, so I figure it's something I should do for myself. Now I have to work even harder to pay for it. ;)

Yeah I heard 'bout that particular automobile. I wouldn't mind one myself. I like the 4-8 feature, it's unique in a way, as I think only 1 other car has that feature. (A pontiac?)

Damn nice car Nuts, when you get the chance to run it on ethanol you will have to post and let us know how it go's. You know, is there a power loss/increase etc. etc.

I mean does a 4-8 feature even do much? The truck chassis is so heavy, I have a hard time imagining it performing well when pulled by only four cylinders. Then again I have absolutely no idea what I'm talking about.
Btw, we have all kinds of emissions regulations and stuff in my town now, every pump has 10% ethanol, consequently the gas prices are about 10c higher than other towns around the state also.

I've been in a 4/8 truck, and it switches when you're going on a highway or in high-gear. Since you already have the momentum, it doesn't take that much energy to keep you going. If it started from rest on 4 cylinders, well, that'd be kinda funny.

Yeah, it is rear-drive. I actually had lots of fun - my car is now only missing its rear bumper, right back rim. I actually got it work a bit - and I'm working on it, lol.

Can you fit a pallet of nuts and bolts in a car or a mini-van? No. See, what you failed to consider, before you opened your yapper, is that I use this vehicle for work as well as pleasure. Now, go back to being banned, or whatever you were doing before this.

This is off topic, but funny.
A collection of Admirals from various countries were having a meeting in Britain, having tea and talking about various subjects. At one point, the French Admiral looks to the American Admiral and says, "Why are we speaking English? We Europeans are forced to learn many launguages, but you Americans can get away with only one. Why is this?"
The American smiled, and put down his tea cup. "I guess it's because we Americans, the British, and the Australians all worked together so you wouldn't have to learn German."

Jeez guys, I don't think Sarah's latest post was bad. Bicycles are great, when I'm at college I use my bike to get me pretty much everywhere. My dad rides his bike to work and my little sister rides her bike to school. They are a great alternative to using a car, are a good workout, are less expensive, better for the environment, get endorphins flowing from the exercise, and you don't get frustrated sitting in traffic.
Bikes are only viable if you're within say 10 miles of your house. Any further and it becomes futile. I work 40 miles from my house so it's not a very practical option.
But yes, in town, sure.

But yes, in town, sure.I'd also say that bikes are only useful on roads with sidewalks nearby, bike trails or non-sidewalked roads that aren't busy. Unfortunately where I am most roads have no sidewalk nearby, there are few bike trails and the roads are mostly busy, making travel by bike hard and dangerous.
But, I still enjoy riding my bike when I can, and I ride a BMX bike which makes it that much harder/more worthwhile when my ass is tired from biking around.

in the sections of town near my house (technically not in town) there are no sidewalks, so I got a mountain bike to make riding the dirt easier. (there are fire trails everywhere, they make it so that a fire will not reach the trees by the road by having nothing growing in them. they make really good bike trails)

I would love to use a bike sometime, but I've seen people get creamed on them because of idiotic drivers. Ever since then, I've been a little afraid to bike on a road with traffic.

It's sometimes because of idiotic bikers too. I've seen plenty of bikers who (as i understand it anyhow) are supposed to "follow the rules of the road" but do things like run red lights, stop signs, weave in and out of traffic, etc. Frickin' crazy.
That's actually one of my pet peeves. People who are hardcore "biker's rights" activists, but then run all over the road like they own the place. Then they wonder why they get creamed, and end up pulling their guts out of Nut's deer catcher. :D

That's right, and what happens when you get a responsible driver who slows down? He's on the road longer!
gasp!!!
Sarah, your beloved non-pollutant has just become the cause of the cars on the road producing even more pollution because they are on the roads longer than they would be otherwise. You can't win for losing, can you?

You can't win for losing, can you?As much as I admire your intent, Veeger, I have to say that's just a bit of a stretch.
Though, at the same time, you can't well pass a biker on a narrow road going 55 can you? I often have to slow down from 60 to 30 just to make sure I don't get nailed head-on because I have to move halfway into the opposite lane just to pass a biker. That's why I wish there were more bike paths, it'd be better for everybody.
Veeger
06-27-2006, 3:38 PM
Granted. But claiming that you can survive in the United States on a bicycle alone is a stretch, too.
Now, we do have to keep in mind that Sarah is from England, which is a very different culture. They are so close, generally, to everything they need in England that there is no need for everyone to have a vehicle, which in turn makes bicycle travel viable.

Now, we do have to keep in mind that Sarah is from England, which is a very different culture. And, of course, gas is like a zillion bucks a gallon.
Veeger
06-27-2006, 3:52 PM
Gas is a zillion bucks per gallon because most everyone is so close to everything else that vehicle travel is not a requirement. It is a luxury. Just for the same reason that motorboats are so expensive here: it's a luxury, and not a required form of travel.
