Alright, I got WarCraft III: The Frozen Throne. Now, I have a (StarCraft) desktop theme that plays a sound every time a program starts up and shuts down.
In the middle of the game, the game lags and freezes, then I would hear that start up sound from my desktop. It appears that a background programs keeps starting up and shutting down, causing the game to do that.

Is there some way to find out what the program is that is causing me this frustration, so I can delete it? I tried using msconfig or System Configuration Utility to disable the start up items except for McAfee and my printer. That didn't work so I selected Diagnostic Startup. That made everything look like Windows 2000. So, I'm back where I started.

Is there any way for me to play my games without being interrupted by other programs?

Well the only real way to figure this out would be to find what that program is. There arn't too many programs that start up and shut down alot while the system is running that I"m aware of. Have you run the virus, spyware, malware scans? If it's a system service you may be able to track it down in the events log (ConP>AdminTools>EventsLog). If you remove the sounds does it still lag up? When you do run msconfig do you shut down all services except microsoft ones? (This may lead to the events log).

Oh! Wait I know! It's a sign! You are not to play WIII.....:P

I think its the sound... even if you leave the program starting and stopping, the sound is what causes the lag. If it still causes lag, you could try to end task 'explorer' this way you have no start menu or desktop and it reduces cpu usage. To start wc3, run a process from task manager

Yes it could also be the sound. You can dissable it in the sounds and multimedia setting in the ConP.

Or just go to C:\Windows\Resources\Themes
and delete the sounds played on an app's startup, those wav's in the themes'
folder;)

Provided it's simple to fix, I sure wnat to play ya with TFT, 'Kismet. ;)

Imho, there are two things that may cause that, you must have a sound setted up to run when apps/certain app starts or it's worse and in doubt scan everything. =/

I dont think he's quite as concerned with the sound as with the performance. If your computer is lagging with Warcraft 3, you may just have a slow computer and you might want to consider buying some upgrades (ram, new video card). If not, run a few tests on your computer to make sure nothing is wrong- Adware/Spyware scans and Virus scans. Then make sure you dont have any obnoxious normal background programs running that might take up memory- AIM, Winamp, bittorrent/p2p's, etc. Zonealarm and some On-Alert virus scanners (Such as your Mcafee) may pop up warnings or update information when you're playing, which may be causing the freezing.

Does it do this right away when you're playing, or right in the middle at a certain time, or at random?

Hmm i had same issue tell i looked at taskmanagure and clicked on cpu and showed that cpu was being used up 100% from mcafee antivirus, maybe if u did same thing u can set anything to low or normal priority to keep ur cpu being used up
