View Full Version : World Cup!
I’m so damn excited about the world cup, gonna have a month of restless night catching up each game, tell me which nation you think will be in the 2nd round?
Would Brazil be the champion again?
It should be a hard game winning the other nation in the same group (Australia ,Japan, Croatia)
Watch out for this match!
Japan (Champion of Asia) V.S Australia (The danger black horse)
Japan is so strong, but what most people don't know is that the whole team in Australia are players that currently playing in popular club in euro, such as Liverpool, Real Madrid, Juventus etc
This is going to be a super stunning game!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyone who doesn't know what FIFA is though, definetly needs to get out more. I remember seeing their logo from back when I was like 10.

On the contrary, I know more about soccer than most Americans since I played it for several years. Hell, I even went to camp kickinthegrass, a team sponsored soccer camp when I was like 8. Yeah, tell me about it. Just last week I was visiting the Colosseum in Rome and to be there in the stands I could only imagine how many people have died in this arena, and also how cool it would be to watch fights, or be in a fight. If you've ever watched Gladiator the movie you know what I'm talking about. Sports today suck compared to sports during that time.

Watching football is just as thrilling as playing it, but only if you have a reason to cheer for one of the teams perhaps. Which is why the WC generally is boring for me ... Norway never qualifies. Gotta root for Sweden this year.
My predictions:
Group A: Germany and Poland
Group B: England and either Paraguay or Sweden. Statistics say Sweden but Paraguay may get dangerous.
Group C: Argentina and Netherlands.
Group D: Mexico and Portugal, probably. Maybe Iran instead of Mexico.
Group E: This is exciting because the US does have a decent team. But I will say Italy and the Czech.
Group F: Brazil and ... Croatia? Dunno.
Group G: France and Switzerland.
Group H: Spain and Ukraine?
Oh yeah. I mean talk about elevating the culture of the world, lets bring back a sport where people fight to the death. I wonder what kind of ratings it will get? I know, lets get closeups and slow motion shots of lions tearing the loser apart?
Frelling lame. And you accuse americans of being 'uncultured dolts' or whatever.
Soccer is pretty boring. But I feel the same way about Football (USA), Baseball, and perhaps Basketball.
What pisses me off is that in American sports it seems, there are so many timeouts and pauses. FFS, each quarter is 15minutes long, and the game lasts for 4 quarters, (one hour) but somehow really lasts like 3 frelling hours. >_<!!!!!!!!

It's one of those sporting events that you can get into reguardless of who is playing, in my eyes. In fact, I am Canadian, and Canada doesn't even have a team and I'm still gonna follow it. I think Brazil is gonna win, but I would love to see England have success. We're in for an interesting run!

I was waiting for a thread on the World Cup, but thank god I didn't make it since (surprisingly) hardly no one likes it here. Oh well.
As you can see from the signature, I'm rooting for the US. I think they have a chance of qualifying from the group. But unfortunately if they do, they are walking right into Brazil which is basically a loss even before the game starts. I think the US will really become a threat in the year 2010 because we will start seeing the newer generation of American soccer players which are getting better every year.

Yeah, I hate watching football. Its really boring.
However, I play it all the time in school. Its really fun to play. *shrug*
And a broken clock is right twice a day. :)
England scored now in the fourth.
Anyway you miss the point. If football had 20 goals every game it would average to about once every 5 minutes. What's so fun about that? The goals are watered down, they're no exciting. Now, with about one goal every half an hour the game is really tense. If you go to a game where your team plays I swear you will experience this. You rise from your seat every time the ball is anywhere near the cage. Every time you want to erupt in euphoria but it doesn't happen... until KABOOM! The stadium goes crazy and you go with them. It's like a drug... For those few seconds of euphoria and the thrill every time the teams nearly score but don't you gladly put up with the rest of the game.
It's like chess... sure it's often boring, but there's an intense fight going on beneath a layer where you can't or won't see, but it's worth it for the wild fights you get every now and then.
holy sh*T, England disappoint me with that crap skill, very poor in attacking, where is all the striker? I expect they got more than that, poor win.

Especially considering the US got to the quarterfinals 4 years ago and lost to Germany in a very tight 1-0 that the Germans may well have lost if Kahn wasn't such a goal-god. It's also worth mentioning that the Germans then went on to the final, and had shutouts and blowouts to that point.

Considering that there's only one match between the quarters and the finals, I find it hard to believe that Germany had multiple "shutouts" and "blowouts" during that one match. If my memory serves me, it was a tight 1-0 match against Korea that may well have been lost by the Germans if Kahn wasn't such a goal-god.

Germany vs. S. Arabia = 8-0 (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport3/worldcup2002/hi/matches_wallchart/germany_v_saudi_arabia/default.stm).
If that's not a blowout, please come up with a better descriptor. "Broseph".

No reason to be a bitchy little girl about things. What we have is a case of misunderstanding. Every game you painstakingly wasted your time to list above occured before the quarterfinals. When you said "[After the quarterfinals Germany] then went on to the final, and had shutouts and blowouts to that point." I assumed you were referring to the games between the quarters and the finals, while its clear now that you thought you were referring to every game in the world cup leading up to the finals. Who would have though the Aussie will take a 3-1 win over Japan?
Australia ranked 42
Japan ranked 18
I’M not sure how the ranking system work, but has proven that is damn wrong.
Now Australia has a big chance to qualify for next round.
Overall it was a very very tide game as I expected, both in skill and tactic, but I would say the Japanese is a little bit better in skills, but so sad for them to lost concentration in the very end.
Japanese Striker should be the main weakness, the whole team are better in organizing each attack, but the Japanese striker all fail to take the opportunity.

The Korean start to play chicken style when they score the second goal in 78 Mins,
Passing the ball around until the game got over, they could have score an extra goal with the advantage of extra man, and Togo is obliviously no match with them, is not necessary to start playing full defensive that early, and the way they do it is very dreadful and too noticeable, what a shame. Where is sportsmanship?
I hope they lose the second spot for next round by lacking score.

And yeah, the Korea - Togo game was pretty sad. I actually thought Togo had a fairly good chance until they lost a player. Then it just got worse and went downhill from there.
you can't get a free meal from Croatian, they skill and name are well know in world cup.
In fact ther is no easy meal for Brazil in group F.
Group of dead should goto:
Group F: Brazil, Croatia, Japan, Australia
Japan had beaten Brazil once, and Brazil always got a hard time from the Jap's

Germany scores against Poland in the last minute!
Of course, I am not only thrilled with this news (Germany is my team) but I also feel it a certain amount of poetic justice. The goalkeeper of Poland was quite good but also a cocky fuck. I'm glad they scored on his monkey ass, and I'm glad it was old-school Neuville while fruity bitches like long-haired Frings faked injury and fell down to almost non-existant challenges.
By the way, Odonkor should be given a motherfucking medal.

Last minute goal for Tunisia was pretty sweet...
HURRAH! England 2 - Trinidad And Tobago 0.
And before anyone says something along the lines of "Trinidad and Tobago should have been a walkover" (Which the papers were saying before the match) They were not, they played bloody well.
England had a few chances in the first half, but a mistimed shot from Crouch and sheer bad luck for Lampard's header and lots and lots of bad luck meant it was 0-0 going into the second 45 minutes
At 81 minutes Peter Crouch more than made up for his earlier misfortune by slipping one past the keeper. And Gerrard followed ten minutes later with a second goal for england in injury time.
Honourable mention goes to Terry, who stopped Trinidad And Tobago going one nil up with one of the most spectacular pieces of defending I have ever seen. He landed well inside the goal, but he cleared the ball.
Oh and Dwight Yorke (Trinidad and Tobago's forward) took a hit in the knackers. It was funny watching someone roll about on the pitch with a hand down their shorts....
As I have been saying - FEAR THE CROUCH
I did see some of the first half, which was very poor. I didn't see the second half, I had started my paper round at half time, but I posted a newspaper for one of the last houses, the woman ran to the door and said 'England scored two goals, 2-0!'

USA - Italy 1-1 final.
That was an extremely dramatic game. The US is lucky to even have one goal handed to them, they scored on none of the mega-chances they had, but it was a deserved goal. The red card to italy was ok and so was the second to the US. I didn't see the first, but strictly speaking there was another red card to go early in the first half, where a US player stops an italian attacker (where he'd be alone with keeper otherwise). USA may have missed out on a penalty (Nesta's hands was not intentional) but then Italy surely missed one in the end there.
Basically it's a fair result, but huge chances were blown on each team, it could easily have been different.
Now USA must beat Ghana and hope for Italy beating the Czechs.

Agreed. But I thought the ref screwed up big time. He really did ruin this game. But great job on the part of the U.S. Finally we have seen them play with heart and show the world that they deserve to be there. Onyewu also showed up strong and proved some of the hype surrounding him. Beasley was still a little questionable, but he did shine on that one play in which the goal didn't count. Donovan played fantastic, so did Dempsey. Both showed tremendous individual skills and teamwork. Dempsey deserves a starting spot from the performance he put today.

And this is why Chaos is on my ignore list; too bad I can't have the forum edit out his quotes.
Anyway, to correct his typical misinformed stupidity, the US was ranked 4th in soccer in April 06 according to FIFA, they were ranked fifth the next month: http://www.soccerphile.com/soccerphile/news/fifa.html
And after the most recent World Cup most fans have aquiesed the gross flaw in the system: teams aren't directly compared to one another, they are compared regionally.
So if the US beats Mexico for their regional final, the US comes out as #1, Mexico #2 for our region. Then if Spain beats Germany for the final in their regional final, Spain is #1 and Germany #2 for their region. After some quick match-math they may determine the world rankings to look like this: #1 Spain #2 US #3 Germany #4 Mexico even though the regions largely haven't played each other worth a shit.
So if Europe's regionals are much more competitive (which, coincidentally they are) then the Americas are artifically high...which is quickly proven when looking at Mexico and the US' performances in the World Cup--four points is their high-score; given that Mexico's group is fucking pathetic, that's saying a lot.

What the fuk is the ref doing? Giving a free win to the Italy, ref you ruin the whole game, and I doubt Italy’s capability to match up with the other team.

i wonder how lucky the italian teams feels. there reaction this morning said that to me they expected it, even though the ref gave them the match at the last minute. it suprised me italy seemed happy with that performance.
tottis reaction was arrogant. the italian soccer team should not be in the the next round. they are a disgrace to the game. no sportsmanship whatsoever. a disgusting result and fifa should be disgusted a team that didnt deserve to be in the next round has made it. by nothing else than coning the ref. whats worse the ref fell for it.
no heart, no soul thats the italian soccer team.
as for the ref, well i’ll be suprised if he isnt given the arse. that is unless he gave fifa the result they wanted.
there must be something up if all over the world fifa are being acused of a higher agenda and team favouritism. i wish australia played ghana. it might have been an entertaining game of football and a fair result. fair play doesnt seem to exist at the world cup. if fifa were an elected body on there promises they would be outed. not only did there reward prolific acting (which they ppromised to card by the way) they deliberatly favoured teams. my tip after watching the cup is they are aiming for a germany-brazil game. heavily looked after by the refs. and a big 4 semi finals. italy, germany, brazil, spain. be interesting to see if i’m right and see how favoured germany is against argentina.
dont get me wrong, if italy won 1-0 with a good header or long range shot, thats fine, i can take a loss. the better team won. but for a ref to stamp his mark on the game and reward a penalty in the last minute of normal play in the game in a 0-0 result thats disgusting. and whats worse is the italians took it, and showed how happy they were. if australia won like that the ref would be fearing for his life. the way australia has been treated by the officials at this tornament has been disgraceful. 4 out of 4 games have been utterly disgraceful.
i for one will be going for every team italy plays from now on.
this isnt a go at the supporters. the majority of italian supporters have been great.
as for previous games where italy were told to get over it when their claims of being robbed. thats just a few sour grapes that your cheating didnt get rewarded in those games or the other team had better actors. but i’m beginning to see why everyone hates the way italians play football. why dont italy watch brazil and learn to play with heart and soul.
the aussies did us proud, we did more than the world expected. see you in south africa. bring on asia finals.

A red card for the ref! He deserve one !
I am ashamed at the way Italy is playing… I have watched all the games Italy played, and except for the one with Ghana and a little bit of the one with the Ceck Republic, I have not seen beautiful soccer.
That said, I think you have to consider two things:
1. Italy is not the only team practicing for Hollywood (hello Portugal, Brasil?…) and it is not because you ACT like you got hurt that the foul didn’t take place. Of course, as a sportsman, I have more respect for the player who gets up after a foul and plays again.
2. I feel FIFA referees are showing yellow and red cards for all kinds of fouls these days. I really respected the Swiss referee (was it during Mexico-Argentina?) who understood both teams were undergoing a lot of stress, and would sanction fouls, but not draw yellow cards.
I think Australia won the game in the hearts of many people with their elegance and spirit.

At least it shut the mouths of all the Brazil bandwagon jumping front runners. And it really isn't a shame in my opinion. In the game, France basically schooled everyone on how the midfield is supposed to be played, and how important it is. Zidane is/was simply brilliant.

Germany won't be playing with Frings I believe, so that's another disadvantage. Also, to me it seems the Italians are playing better BECAUSE of the betting scandal, since their President offered to pardon anyone involved if Italy wins the World Cup, and several of the members of the Azzurro are implicated in the scandal. The one real advantage Germany has is the fans. We'll have to see if that, along with Klose, is enough to shut down Italy. France should sweep Portugal if France plays anything like they did last game. So the finals should be either Italy vs France, or Germany vs France. The first semifinal game (Italy vs Germany) starts today at 2:55 P.M. if you live in the East Coast. The second semifinal game (Portugal vs France) starts at 2:55 P.M. (EST) tomorrow.
Here's a quote from a poster from another forum. He explains it well.
While I'd still consider a few select players - Pele, Platini, Cruyff, (et al if I weren't drunk) as significantly better than Zidane - for this one match, anyway, Zinedine performed as an immortal. I'm not sure why there are any fans of football resisting such a moment. The sheer will to triumph of Paolo Rossi is the only performance I can recall from my personal cup viewership that rivals Zidane's against Brazil.
Accept it for what it was, and be grateful you got to see it - all the yapping about defense, Viera, Makelele, blah blah blah, is just that: yapping - it misses the point. Anyone watching, and most especially the "uninformed" - that is, those without preconceptions about what "should" have happened, saw the truth of Zinedine's magificence. Yes, Viera and Mak worked and their work created the canvas upon which Zinedine painted. But never question who held the brush in this match, nor who was responsible for the masterpiece.
It was one of those moments only players of immense talent can grasp, and Zidane some sure grasped it.

Sorry Genocide. Germany has just lost 2-0 to Italy in overtime. Wow. Only a few minutes away from penalty kicks as well. Grosso and Del Piero score, almost right after one another. Very close game. Both goals from Italy were just exceptional. Nothing much can be done about those. So congrats to Italy for reaching the finals, and Germany for a very well played tournament (and in the process proving a lot of critics wrong).

Some person on another forum ripped it. I had no knowledge it was a Dutch Station he took it off of, but it probably was because it had some weird song. But thanks for watching it.

Alright, I'll change my prediction to France over Portugal, France over Italy. -_-
Ok, I know the Italy now, they like to make the move in the last moment and suprise you, and when you relise it, is too late.

Well, to be honest, that was just this game. In the game against the US, they scored in like the 20th minute. Mostly, the Italian strategy is to score a goal, and then bunker up in a defensive shell and only counterattack. The commentators said that Italy pressed offensively in the overtime so they wouldn't have to go into penalty kicks. And then the second goal was because Germany had to go out all or nothing to tie up the game in like a minute, and in the process, they left themselves open to a counterattack which the Italians took to their advantage.

It seems that all the teams I favor, tend to die horribly. In the qualifications, I was rooting for Ireland. They didn't make it.
Then I was supporting Argentina and Hollansd, they get killed too.
After that, England was my favourite, too bad for them.
I was rooting for Germany when they played Italy. they lose, again.
I supported Portugal over France, although I didn't really like either of them.
Whatever happened, I just DIDN'T WANT FRANCE AND ITALY TO GET TO THE FINALS!
Guess what...
I can't stand France, full stop. I like Italy as a country, but despise their playing style.
(the only plus for France making it tot the final is Zidane being there :))

Haha, you know, Zidane might just be the only person that would actually make someone WANT to be French. I'm definately buying a French Zidane jersey as soon as I can.
Anyway, great game played by the French with the exception of Barthez. That penalty kick taken by Zidane was just classic. The Portuguese deserved to lose for all their diving though. I'm somewhat happy they lost.

Haha, I'd generally agree with you if this was any other French team, but I won't because France has Zidane. And Henry.

I just got into the World Cup band-wagon. Ooh, didn't expect Brazil to be eliminated and Beckham stepping down as the Captain of the English team. I think that France will win the World Cup final, but I never saw that one coming, France vs. Italy.

Why wouldn't you expect Beckham stepping down as captain? He's 31 and England just lost, once again. By next World Cup, he will be 35, which is definately too old to even play. By resigning, he is giving someone who CAN play in the 2010 World Cup the chance to become captain.

Come on now, you can't honestly say that Italy are "divers" when Portugal are... well, there. I mean, Figo goes down like a sack of potatoes when he feels a light breeze on his back, and Ronaldo's "winking" antics, although not necessarily diving, have not exactly endeared him to the English fans.

It's not going to be that exciting. Both teams know they aren't going to the finals, and its a consolation game. Usually, both teams don't really try, and bring out their B teams. But tomorrow should be very exciting. France versus Italy.

Zidane = owned by replay. None of the refs saw it live but the crybaby Italians got him ejected. This final was a fucking joke...Italy played nobodies almost the entire World Cup and Zidane fucking headbutts someone like a 10-year-old freak. Way to bore the shit out of me guys. This has to be the worst, most anticlimactic World Cup I've ever seen.
the Cup now over, we can catch up on some sleep!

Nice... Zidane still got the golden ball. And I agree with the decision because I think he deserved it. Other than that moment of lunacy, he was playing at a level no one else matched. If only he got the Cup to go with it.
Zidane is truly a good player, but his action shook me up a bit.
Materazzi may have said something nasty, but if it was racial, why didn’t Zidane go to the ref about it, since it is according to FIFA rules that racial slurs are unacceptable?
There were other ways to deal with the situation. Zidane has a mouth doesn’t he? Instead of butting a man in the chest as an animal, he could have said something back or gone to the referee about it.

Excuse me? He headbutts someone and it totally disturbs you? Do you realize that your signature features some cartoony bear beating the shit out of people, complete with blood? Sorry, I'm just a little confused about your state of mind regarding violence when a guy headbutting someone is more shocking than a bear kneeing a prone man in the face or hitting someone so hard they leave their feet, spraying blood.
Insults and racial slurs are far too common in the WC, and it's time they did something about it. Zidane is responsible for his actions, but it's pretty undeniable that he was obviously provoked by some kind of insult.
Bitch what? ...
It shook me up a bit, but didn't disturb me.
If it was what Zidane claim to be, he did what he should to headbutt the mother F*cker.
If that was you, you probably head butt his ass intead of his chest.
My signiture is there to reflect the ugly side of human, we deserve the hit from Animal, e.g Bear. But I love peace.
Zidane should have done this instead of the head butt

It looks like your signature is there to support violence. Sort of like I wouldn't make a signature of some guy getting taken to browntown to support heterosexuality.

The Italians are notorious divers and fakers, but I seriously doubt he was faking the first 10-30s of pain during that headbutt. That was no girly headbutt--he knew what he was doing with that thing. I'm no super-expert on headbutts, but I've got my share of martial arts under my belt and that wasn't some amateur jab.
