View Full Version : Metal Fatigue
I've decided to reinstall this game recently, but it doesn't seem to work really well on XP.
Can anyone who knows this game help me out?
There's two main problems:
1. The graphic is messed up. I also have the game installed on win 98', and everything looks way better there. I have no clue why.
2. No background music! Why? I've ran over the net with google and found no place where anyone explains how to get the music back. I remember that when I played the game many years ago it did have music (bg music, the sounds do work for me atm), but now it doesn't work not on the 98' and not on XP.
Help will be greatly appreciated.

Harh, I tried that once, and the same thing happend to me. MF just doesen't like XP at all.
So... is there no way to make it like XP?
Is it a Dos based game? If that's so, you might wanna take a peep at this (http://www.abandonia.com/main.php?nav=programs). ;)
DOS Game?
:P
I already have DOSBOX Basan... I wuv DOS games (Dune II, Heretic,...), but MF isn't one of them. It was released in 2000; take a peep at this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metal_Fatigue). ;)

If that's a DOS game, I'm a cow (Tauren doesn't count! I'm not an RPer!)
*Sigh* I forgot that you said to have enjoyed other Dos games in the recent past. I can't remember it all, ya know? :P
And from what I've read in that article, how come have you got such a rare 'gem' upon your hands? And btw, is it that appealing n' good to play with? ;)

Nope!

Oh don't sweat it, I don't even get to remember what happened yesterday. My memory-line is as long as the time passes between one internet disconnection to another on my idiot computer.

I bought the game about the time when it was just released.

Yes, it's a very good game. I really wish it could be played in multiplayer (note that it has Multiplayer, just no players to play with...) but even in singleplayer it's fun. Both the 'comp player' AI and unit AI are really smart, so you get to see fights that look unbelievably realistic and it's challenging to beat stages at the same time. The game has numerous features that were overlooked by today's games - like the multiple ground levels, the fact you can collect wreckage from the battlefield from dead enemy units, research it, and start producing these units on your own; the fact that you get 'upgrade points' in the campaign after each stage according to how well you did, and you can use those to upgrade different areas in your army according to your play style; the fact that projectiles actually interfere with terrain and not just magically hit your enemies once in range, and thus give the terrain a big impact on gameplay; the way bases can be built and razed very quickly, and resources refresh slowly, which leads to an expansion-hunting gaming (which is, by my opinion, more fun than the way expanding in SC, WC, RA, and games alike is set).
Altogether, I'd definitely count MF as one of the better games I have hidden in my CD shelf.
The only problem with the game - it never got a dedicated community (I guess because the interface is not very user-friendly, and the fact that the game requires skill to play - what discourages noob players, who consist over 90% of the gaming community), so it didn't become popular. :'(
Nope!

lollerskates. Yeah, keep telling yourself that. The reason that nobody liked the Gremlin was because they were noobs. Did it ever occur to you that fast-base razing and incredibly slow resources combined with slow base building makes for a shitty game? Maybe you haven't played anybody worth a damn, but that kind of thing makes for people building a bunch of base razing units and rushing your base. Bor-ring.

Incredibly slow resources? What? You can tell more than one hoverven to mine a lava pool, you know. Like, maybe 15 of them, and build some solar panels, too. You'll get your banks dripping metal and yet you'll be constructing vehicles and combots in huge quantities at the same time.
Slow building? Hello? I can make an Mconverter, two Cyrofarms, three Vehicle Factories, A Defense Rally, Part Factory, Assembly, and three turrets (2*laser 1*AAmissile) all in less than four minutes. You call that slow?
Maybe it's just that your playing skills weren't worth a damn, and you always lost in your matches, so you decided that the game is bad?
Face it, you couldn't handle micromanaging large amounts of units spread amongst three ground levels for defence, offense, and expension at the same time.
This doesn't mean the game sucks, it just means you need to practice. Just like in SC, you can't expect to beat Boxer right from start. You need to play again, and again, and again, until you're able to deal with the big guys.
