Warner Bros.-based Legendary Pictures has picked up film rights to adapt the popular fantasy video game franchise World of Warcraft and will develop the project with game publisher Blizzard Entertainment, which is owned by Vivendi.
While the "Warcraft" franchise has been around for more than a decade, the most recent iteration, the megahit online title "World of Warcraft," has transformed the video game industry.
Unlike most games, where players pay $50 once and play until they're done, more than 6 million people around the world pay $14.99 per month to participate in the multiplayer game.
This is going to be a disaster, right out of the box. It's going to be impossible to live up to the attention to detail expected by the masses of fans around the world.
Why bother.

Actually, that may end up being true. While not all WoW players are non-intelligent 12 year olds, there are still a large group of them out there. They won't be looking for quality at the same level as most D&D players, so they may not care as long as there are "hot" dark elves in it.

FF7 AC was fucking awesome.
Not seen Silent Hill yet, but people have been saying it was pretty good.
Not every video game based movie is a flop, it just depends on who's making it.
Do you really think that Blizzard would do something that would be crappy in the Warcraft universe? Its been their, obvious, focus for a decade now, even throughout D2 and Starcraft. This just hurts though, because it seems like yet another reason to ignore Diablo and Starcraft.
Blizzard is going to lose their loyal fanbase, which is sad. At least they have all those paying customers to keep them company (kinda wierd to, because I always thought Blizzard was different from most other gaming companies).

Yes. The design guys are not the ones that sign the paychecks, and in the end, if the suits want to sell the rights to a movie producer, they won't allow the designers to stand in their way of a check with a lot of zeros on it.

I still doubt they would let this happen to Warcraft. Its their 'baby' afterall. They been fucking coddling it for years, I strongly doubt they would let some stranger come in and bastardize it into a lame ass movie.
A warcraft movie (period) would be pretty interesting, which is probably what it is, not something based of WoW specifically (how lame would that be anyways? how the hell do you make a movie from a MMORPG?).

Critics don't know shit. IGNmovies doesn't know shit. Good majority of people in front of my eyes say the movie is decent to great. I've even seen the film and I can tell you, it's not a Uwe Boll film. Granted some of the acting and dialogue is nothing to write home about, but the visuals are incredible and this film is the first that had a good crossover, keeping the feeling of a movie whilst having great video game tie-ins and plot.

Back on topic, it's doubtful that Warcraft could even be turned into a movie, I was never suprised in Warcarft 3, and the 'to be continued' style of game ending wouldn't sit well with viewers.

Heh, I should've guessed this would happen. Blizzard is trying to take over the gaming industry! First the RPGs (Diablo series), then the RTS (StarCraft and WarCraft Series), then MMORPGs (WoW), Then FPS (SC:Ghost), and now they're expanding into the neighboring galaxy of Cinema. Who knows--maybe Blizzard will start producing music albums later. But I have confidence in Blizzard that they know what they're doing.
ADD: Didn't Blizzard also come up with the PS1 game "The Lost Vikings"? Because I have "Norse by Norsewest: The Lost Vikings Return" and it's pretty fun.

Decide on your own whether a movie is good or not, or at least don't base it all on critics. Personally I think they get paid off a lot for good reviews.

Man, i think videogame movies are good. The Tomb Raider series are pretty nice. But WoW just suck. Since i dont think it has a story line since its a MMORPG. I think they'd do better with Diablo and StarCraft.

Anyway, Tomb Raider I & II blew. However, they had some entertainment value action-wise, so they weren't total trainwrecks.

Depending on where/when the storyline is based, I'll probably enjoy this regardless. It'd be nice to have it build on the existing storyline in WoW though ^_~ ^_~ ^_~.
edit: And perhaps have the WoW universe change/update in regard to the release of the movie :).

Think about the people that DON'T play WoW... it's made for a broad audience, and chances are that this is what'll make everyone upset because the movie will probably star someone like a nOOb. Now, why can't they make a movie like Red Alert? Now that'd be a good movie!

I asked one of my friends who played WoW if he's gonna go watch the movie even if tons of people told him that its boring, no action, and the best thing in there is a couple of half naked night elves. He said: YES!

If Blizzard made movies in full CG like the cutscenes, then I could easily see the movie being very hot, getting great box office sales, and paving the way for a new era of CG based movies.
Anybody that has seen the cutscenes from diablo, Warcraft, and the overneglected StarCraft franchises knows that these movies could practically make themselves. They'd be instant hits.
However, they decided to go live-action. For that reason alone, I have low expectations.

I agree. If Blizz did a CG movie, I know I'd go see it, even with it being a video game movie. But live action? Reminds me too much of those DnD movies...

if it was cg then it would be an awesome film! they wouldn't even need to desgin many new characters. And wat's with u sick perverts about looking at scantily clad nightelf women?;) .....although i must admit, having half a dozen purple skinned, large eared, well endowed, babes in a chainmail bikini strut around the screen does seem appealing:D
Still, i'm willing to give Blizzard a chance at this. They've always come up with totally kick ass stuff, so i don't think that they'll be willing to screw themselves over with this movie. Maybe after they get this outta their system, they could make a starcraft and diablo movie
Who knows, If they screw up, maybe they'll switch back to SC because no one will like Warcraft anymore, Or they'll just change the Gameplay like Resident Evil had to do after Apocylypse.
