View Full Version : Latency
Okay I know this question was asked before but I can't find the thread and I'm gettin grather tired of this. So here's the problem.
Now that I've got Hi-Speed I can join B.net games just fine however when creating them no one can join because they say that the latency is too high. How can I fix this? I don't want to hear that it cannot be done and going to Blizzard tech support is the last thing I want to do so whats going on?

I joined these fourms just because I hear about this problem all the time, but yet it is so easy to fix.
Set your firewall up right, if you have zonealarm, have Starcraft have access to everything. Windows SP2 add starcraft to the programs list. Otherwise set up all the ports (6112) in your router, or the computer that happens to be sharing the internet.

Great help there Neutral...
Auh yes. If you have a router; to have more details about it and learn steps to portforward or configure your firewall, you should go here. http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/routerindex.htm (Portforward.com)

Now how do you do this. Put starcraft into the programs list?;)

what i do is delete a file called "bncache.dat" (in your SC folder) then re-log on bnet and my lat is fine for a while but you need to do it almost every time befor you host a game or you wont get any ppl unless your just RMing
but if you say log on and play 14 games then want to host, you'll have to log off, miniuse SC, del it, un-minimize it, log back on, and host

No Firewall
I have Windows 2000 (pro)
And I connect directly to the Hi-Speed modem
Anyother ideas?

Hmmm. I'll give that a try but that shouldn't be the way it works. There must be something that one can do to fix this.

Maybe it could help if you say what model number your modem is. Ex; CG814WG Cable Modem.

hey guys,
I have a really fast direct connection as i am in a university accomodation and the internet is provided by university. when i download i can get maximum speeds of 300 KBps for a single download or upto 500 if i download 3-10 files at once.
I recently bought starcaft & broodwar just to play on battle.net as i had played single player long time ago. but when the game starts i lag a lot. If it is 1v1 there is no problem but where there are more than 2 players, i lag. even though i have a really fast internet.
also i stay in new zealand, maybe that might be one of the reaon too. any help will be appreciated.
luckily I have a mac, and no need for firewall :D
Luckily, you've also paid more "oh, so much bucks" just to get it. :smirk:
And U-238 just as a suggestion, when was the last time you've defragged your HD? ;)

Also, try the following - it's worked for me on several occasions:
1. Go to Start->Run
2. Run "regedit" (without the quotes)
3. Locate HKEY_CURRENT_USER->Software->Battle.net
4. Right-click and delete that entry. Say yes when they ask you to.
5. Re-run SC and try logging on.

Wait a sec wont that delete the server list and youll be "connecting To Fastest Server" and youll log into a gateway that you may not want to get logged to? Just like SC Shareware - conectnig to either US West or US East at almost at random..

No, it just resets them. So you'll have to re-select the correct server (it's set on US West by default) and re-type your username and password. However, this resetting does clear out latency, and you should be able to host/join afterwards.

Or maybe u got a high connection to the servers (regardless of your internet connection, i know its high speed). Or maybe the b.net got some issues. In either cases, make your friend (who doesnt have lag) make a game, and join it. After you've joined his game, it usually breaks your lag. Then when you make games, he can join.
EDIT: Or maybe u got a high LAG connection to the servers*

Qwest Actiontech GT701-WG DSL Modem. (With the wireless gateway). Whats that got to do with it?

And are ya sure you're close enough to the nearest Wi-Fi antena at your abode/where the Hell ya are when playing it? And do you runned throught your modem known issues FAQ/manual already?
If I were you, would also use a 3rd party editing app on your SC B.Net settings just to check if you have the correct ones in (hackers/losers nowadays do the most 'amazing' stuff :P). And if not, ask around and someone will be more than glad to tell ya those in order for ya to fix'em. ;)

I don't think it's hackers. This problem started just after I got Hi-Speed.

Then it must be re-routing someplace else and that does the lagging 'damage'... and if it's that, then I don't know how to solve it (although checking your SC B.Net connection settings might've helped). :(

I just want to ask: When im in the jojn game menu (dont know how its called)
Most of the time all of the games names are like this "¹°·® ¸·±â ³ª°¡Áö ¸¶»ï"
Is this due to poor conection to the inernet? But when i play i do not lag/experience lag!
:o
EvilEmpire, those are the Korean characters that in our regular PC's with no such alphabet get interpreted that funny, weird looking way. ;)
When seeing those games, I'll simply stray away from'em because don't even know the map they're being played upon n'/or it's particular settings. Would it be too hard to post'em in English? :P

Koreans come over to the West server and play against Americans, but host games in Korean titles(??). Even though they're in the West server, they are still in another far off country which effects their latency to host and play games.
8/sec is bad unlike mine which is 10.Mbps. Slow connections don't result in why the text are diffreant.

Yes, tell us how you did it. You told me you made your it so your modem could accept online games. That wasn't really specific, was there like a checkbox or something that said enable gaming? Eh?

Yea that was pretty much it. I port forwarded it but I still couldn't host so I went back and checked it again and then I saw, I plain bold text, "Enable DMZ Hosting". This was a setting that allowed the modem to accept certain crytieria for online gameing. I clicked "yes" and that was it! I'm "normal" now.

I've got the same problem U-238 had, except ditto Warcraft 3. I've got SC checked off in the firewall exceptions, and even when I turn firewall off I still can't host games. However, I can host counterstrike and diablo 2 games and LAN games...
I've got Windows XP, and I'm not so good with computers, so don't get too complicated with me :P This has been an ongoing problem since I got DSL; no hosting for like 4 years now :(
Lol you need to probably post forward your ruoter like I did. And when you do make sure there arn't any little check boxes that say "Enable DMZ Hosting". This website (http://www.portforward.com) will help you to port forward your router. You'll need to know the make and model of you r router though before they can help you.

Auh, I found it too in my modem, thnx.
DMZ (Demilitarized Zone)
DMZ stands for Demilitarized Zone and is an area that is partially secured by the firewall. This feature automatically forwards all Internet Traffic to the Computer you specify in the section. This feature is commonly used for gaming and videoconferencing.

Tell whatever you need to 'fool' yourself. :smirk: I just don't think that is really worth buying a more expensive computer just to do the same general things we do on a regular PC.
Don't like the Windows OS? Stuff it, then (for instance, Linux). ;)

if your problem is still not fixed do my old trick. "server share". i helped my frds all the time when they had hostin probs. get a frd who has no prob hosting. mkae him host a passowred game and you join. wait 5 secs and eave. then YOU host and you wont have any latency probs until you are gona host agian. then you have to "server share" again.
Actually I did fix it. I'm running fine now with no probs. (Other than there are only n00bs to play with on B.net)
