View Full Version : Soccer Reffing

I got my certification for a level 8 soccer referee in March, and I worked as an assistant referee for two games last saturday. For the two games, I was paid 25 dollars for only working two hours. Now I just have to work up the courage to be the Main referee. Though, until then, I have to figure out what I want to buy >.>

Is anyone else a reff?

I used to ref for a neighborhood Little League soccer organization, but that was a few years ago, and I've kind of forgotten most of the rules. Bleh.

Have fun, Markpyro, and remember to stay out of the ball's way :)

I don't ref but my friends do, and I play travel soccer. I'm assuming you're only reffing young children since you're a level 8 referee. If so, being a main referee should be incredibly easy because the games aren't taken too serious at that age. So don't worry about it.

On another note, I think that refs get payed too much and that's the reason why us players have to pay so much to play in the league.

I reffed at college for our intramural leagues and stuff. It was pretty fun, but it was quite a bit of pressure, sometimes. A lot of the standard gripes apply: nobody notices a good referee, everybody notices a bad referee. One bad call and you're an idiot for the rest of the night.
On another note, I think that refs get payed too much and that's the reason why us players have to pay so much to play in the league. On my own personal note, there's almost no way a referee can get paid too much in terms of league-play. Whether you realize it or not, people bitch at referees incessantly, and sometimes blame entire losses on the referees. Referees are very poorly treated far too frequently and aren't protected sufficiently by league rules.

Disrespectful players are often ignored, referees get haggled at every call, and players get pissed off because their street game crap doesn't follow the letter of soccer rules and suddenly their "killer spin move that scores every time" is just plain "handball".

Nope, I don't ref.

I'm sure you can make Head Ref though Markpyro, as Battlecruiser said it wouldn't be too hard, unless you have those insane sports parents that are like "ZOMG MY SON LOST, THE WORLD IS RUINZED!!!!!!!!111!!~!!"

Ive always wanted to be a referee, for little kids though. I thought it would be fun to boss around kids.
GA is right, refs are very disrespected all the time.

I'm assuming you're only reffing young children since you're a level 8 referee. No, actually, I can center ref for anything under U-13 (12-13 year olds. If I were 15, I could do U-14, and so on), and I can Assisstant ref anything under like... U-18 (omg scary). So far, none of the parents have gotten overly annoyed with me or my calls. Lucky me, though I've only played two games >.>

BTW Battlecruiser, where yeh been? Still playing halo?

Oh, that's mostly true when you're reffing players at and above U-16, but it really matters on how serious the game is taken by the players and parents on the sidelines. Generally in the younger divisions, parents are just happy to see their children get some exercise and more often than not, parents and coaches are just happy for children to have fun and learn the game. But as the years go by, players drop from the league, and the remaining players are very serious so any mistakes made by refs and players are taken seriously. That's why it would be good for MarkPyro to start reffing now so that if and when he starts reffing the higher levels of the league, he has the experience to handle whatever is thrown at him.

From my experience at my travel games, the ref isn't treated harshly unless they make big mistakes. But no one really gets pissed off at a ref if a small handball isn't seen or whatnot. What they do get angry for is when an obvious offsides isn't called and as a result a goal is scored.

Assistant referee is very easy. Don't you just have to raise the flag when the ball goes out to show whos throw in it is? Only the main ref has to make major calls.

Not anymore. I cancelled my xbox live account back in January. Now I'm just waiting for Halo 3 to get back into gaming.

And offsides. But, true. Still, the money is nice.

Same here. I realized that I was paying for it every month but not even using it. When halo 3 comes out, I'll have enough money for a 360 and I'll set up Xbox live again. We'll have to play sometime :P

I know that refs have it hard, but it's hard for me to not protest when THE REFEREE FOR EVERY GAME I HAVE IS THE FATHER OF A PLAYER ON THE OTHER TEAM.

And don't tell me I don't know that because I personally know them all.

I still don’t understand why a ref is still needed in today’s high tech soccer matches.

Every corner, motions and position are recorded in the camera’s eye, it then replay it back just in a blink of time, very often the ref give wrong decision but the decision is still valid even it was show on the camera that he is completely wrong.

Who need a ref… useless!
