View Full Version : Warcraft: Orcs and Humans Question

Hello one and all! Allow me to introduce myself: I'm DLD (no, really?). If you've seen anybody by this username on any other forum, that's me. If you haven't seen me before, pleased to meet you.
Okay, now here's my question: I'm unable to get Warcraft 1 to work properly on my computer. I can get the grainy sound to work (I guess there's no way to fix this as I think all of their sounds were recorded in 8-bit quality), but I'm having serious woes with the music. All of the sound cards on the setup menu either can't be detected or don't work at all.
The only music card I can get to work is "General Midi", which utterly screws up the music sequences. I tried googling all the sound card drivers and I couldn't find any download that would work for XP.
Is there anything I can do to remedy this, or is there some kind of source port you can download for the game like there is for DOOM?
Thanks for your help.
I doubt if any of our member have Warcraft 1, but I'm guessing that Windows XP would be too good of a system to work it (since it is so old).

Eh, I've played WC1 but that was a long time ago (read, about 9-10 years ago) and on a Windows 98. :P
But I believe you can put it to work in the XP if you select the game's *.exe file, go to it's properties and make it Windows 98 compatible (at the "compatibillity" tab). ;)

I believe Warcraft: Orcs and Humans only works for MsDos/Dos and i heard windowsxp doesn't support that

If the compatibility suggestion from Basan doesn't work then I'm afraid I have to no clue. You might be better off checking around in the Technology Annex, as we are not privy to such technical genius.

Thanks for the welcomes, guys!
I was able to run WC1 on my 5-year old computer (which runs XP) just fine. The only problem I have with it on my new computer is that the setup.exe files don't like any of the sound cards for music...so I'm either stuck with really wonky instruments or no music at all. The rest of the game works perfectly fine.
You must know your sound card definitions in order to make the sound setup properly. If ya don't know, then it'll have to be done by playing it by hear (with the DMA, Hzs and related jazz). As in, fiddle it 'till you get the right config'. ;)
Other than that, I simply don't know. :(

Yeah...I tried every single sound card on the list, and the only ones that worked gave no sound...except "General Midi", which screwed up the music.

VDM sound and dosbox should make WC1 work. At least that's what they say:shiftyr:
*Rofl* Tharisfal, you're probably right. :) Although Blizz' doesn't allow it's old games to freely get inside Abandonia.
In fact, you've reminded me to just get an ol' PC car game that I had (in my Windows 98 home PC) taht a friends loaned to me long ago, which was in my "to do" list for a while now - Ignition (http://www.abandonia.com/games/en/107/Ignition.htm). ;)

ah, the good part of having Windows 2000. It is compatible with most(if not all) 98' games. And compatible with some 95' games. If not... google it for compatibility pack :)
And I don't think Blizzard really cares. They have got enough money out of WoW. Totally forgeting about SC fans that want Ghost and SC2...

I don't think Basan is telling you to "try all of the soundcards", he's telling you to "figure out your soundcard address settings" so you can manually configure whichever soundcard you pick (soundblaster or midi). That's pretty much your best bet to get compatibility and alignment. But yeah, I have no idea why you want to play WCI...it's so crazy imba. T_T
Invis entire army, send to base, win.

How exactly do you figure out your soundcard address settings?
When I select the soundcard from the list, I always hit "Auto - detect". Too bad I'm only decent with computers rather than 1337. =(
Get Aida32 (http://www.warboards.org/showpost.php?p=123645&postcount=5) and run it. Then you must check the sound card settings it detected and use those at WC1 sound setup. ;)
Edit add: Btw, if the dl' link is dead, just let me know. I'll upload the version I have to my FTP corner and link it here for ya to have it (which works on both 2K and XP). But afterwards, please be kind enough to let me know when I can remove it. :)
