Hey I'm a noob what do you think I would do?

Erm, I'm in my den, primarily using my good computer, though I have my laptop on for MSN, IRC and whatnot, and I'm actually transferring some stuff over to my server in my room.

So I'm using three computers right now. I wouldn't be able to recall any great stats offhand other than computer 1 is p4 512 RAM, laptop is p3 256 RAM, server is P3 128 RAM.

Unclear question :)

Computer by HP

p4 3.0 ghz w/ 512 mb ram
160 gb hard drive
DVD RW/CD-RW
nVidia GeForce 5200 graphics card

19" flat panel LCD monitor

i love my computer, and therefore, I love costco :) The whole system (monitor + computer + wireless mouse and keyboard, harmon kardon speakers) came together, at costco for like $1600 - $1700... and since i do mostly EVERYTHING in front of comp, my dad decided it was a good deal. i have to agree...

Homemade computer literally put together from working pieces of older ones-
Dell Trinitron 19 inch Monitor (from my brother's friend's dead computer)
Celeron Motherboard (forget what model, pulled off a computer we found in a trashcan)
Pentium 3 866(?) Mhz
TDK 50x CDRW
Creative PC-DVD 12 x rom drive (which we pulled off a computer we found in a trashcan, same as motherboard actually)
800 something ram (pieces found in random places, some from old computers, some bought)
80 gig hard-drive taken from the 'out of date' computers at my brother's tech school
connector cables, frame, and power box: 'free' computer that was given to my sister about 4 years ago. It hardly turned on so we scrapped it and took what we could salvage. Little did we know we were supposed to return it.
G-force 2 Ultra that my brother won in a game contest (we had other, less capable computers)
Be thankful all your computers came in one piece!

Wow, how does that thing work? How much did it cost?

For mine, I don't really remember much, and I don't really want to sift through system information. I just went by what was on the system window in the control panel, I'm not going to go through System Information...

AMD Athlon XP 3000+
DVD ROM drive + CD Burner/RW Drive
2.17 GHz
120 GB (I'm pretty sure, I can't find it/don't really want to look so hard right now.)
1 GB of RAM

I wanted to build my own comp too, but my parents wouldn't let me.

I have SATA support too, but why do you post support of it when you are using a PATA drive?

OboeGuru
04-18-2004, 2:24 PM
Because I suck and have like $30, so I can't buy a new HD. And I desperately need a new HD too, both of mine collectively have like 7 GB free, 1.86 GB on the (60 GB) one that I keep all documents and files on. :(

Mostly because it's in Abit's description of the mobo, so I threw it in there. ;)

The one I'm on:

Pentium
64MB RAM(2x32)

The one I'm (99% likely) getting:

AMD Athlon 64 3200+
MSI K8T NEO FISR2
KingMax 512MB PC3200
ACO 16x DVD-ROM
LITEON 52x32x52 CD-RW
NIKAO CATL1-DK
Mitsumi floppy drive
Windows X(tra cash)P Home

Still deciding on some things. :)

HP built P4 3.06GHz with 1024 Mb RAM, decent DVD-rom and CD-RW drive, dualscreen with nVidia Quadro card, too lazy to find out the exact model.

A cheap HP scanner, an expensive EPSON printer, Logitech MX500 mouse, Juster SP-988 speakers on integrated sound card.

All that on an IKEA table and computer box.

Current Specs:
751mhz AMD
384mb RAM
64mb Geforce 4 5400 (I think it's a 5400...but I'm not sure..)
17inch Samsung Liquid Display SyncMaster 151v (yes, bitches, liquid)
Memorex 52x/32x/52x (don't every buy a reader at 52x - it WILL shatter disks. It happened to my friend's Windows XP disc, and it happend to me while I was installing Unreal II. It's not fun. You have to take apart the drive, clean it from the inside out, and pray that the lense isn't damaged.)
40 Gig WD. The drive is actually one that a friend is letting me borrow, because my 80gig Maxtor got friend, and I think we need to contact some data recovery specialist if I ever want to get anything off of that thing again.

Upcoming Specs:
AMD 64 3200
512mb RAM (might bump that up to 1gig just for the hell of it..)
128mb Radeon 9800 Pro
Don't think I'm going to be needing a new moniter any time soon =]
120gig WD @ 7,200RPM or a 40gig WD @ 10,000RPM.

Gonna be pumping a lot of money into this new machine. Lots.

Whiteknight

LCD, Liquid Crystal Display. That is usually what most laptops have. Is it a laptop? Besides, LCD's aren't all that better, it's just that you can have smaller monitors with them, and maybe sharper letters. Not a big deal to them...

LCD monitors are pointless if you're a kid who intends to play games. The refresh rates are an abhorition. If you're a professional, or someone who doesn't care about games, then they are fine I suppose, although the refresh rates still hurt my eyes just looking at them.

You are greatly misinformed. While, IMO, CRT's are still superior, they won't be for much longer (one of the best on the market is a couple of years old). LCD's have improved much in their refresh rates, now some models even being decent to run a fast paced racing game on them. The biggest problem they face now is their fixed resolution, which makes resolutions lower than the built-in resolution look horrible.

I think it would be cool if some manufacturer made a DLP computer monitor, but they don't seem practical at such small sizes.

Weekend: I haven't seen an LCD monitor with a refresh rate above 4ms at 1600x1200. That's 25hz. My monitor, that cost 1/5 of what an lcd would be had an 85hz refresh rate at that size. Has there been some new development that I am unaware of?

Also, AJs computer is by far the best. I'll be going dual opteron myself, soon.

Yeah, I guess my information was slightly dated, however that monitor costs more than twice what my monitor (Sony Trinitron Multiscan E540) cost me 3 years ago, and still performs almost 30% worse at my resolution. It hardly seems like a wise purchase.

Mine didn't do anything for my gaming, but it made a huge impact on how long I could work, write, and research things -- it just didn't hurt my eyes. My old monitor was like staring into a television =P
