The SC.org poll has shown that melee is the most popular unpopular game type. I have never played Melee before and don't really understand what it is. From what I got out of the comments, several players control a single base, so that they have to focus on different things (economy and micro for example). Is that all there is to this game type? How do strategies change when playing Melee?

The game you are talking about is TEAM Melee. Melee is just regular starcraft. I looked on sc.org and the only poll I saw that had to do with anything like that said that team Melee was the most popular, not the most unpopular. It acually seems harder to play team melee, because unless you and your partner are really good at working together often you're messing up the micro by both trying to do it at once, and meanwhile you die. Micro/Macro is how I like to play it.

So how exactly does team melee work then?

And I meant that it is the most popular unpopular game type i.e. the most popular non-mainstream.

I used to have a group of friends that would play team melee with me, usually 2v2 (one team vs. one team). Contrary to what Shadez said, it's actually easier than controlling it all yourself because one person can strictly focus on building the base, pumping out units, upgrading and expanding (macroing) and the other person can be the one that controls the combat units (microing) so in reality you only have half the stuff to focus on.

It's cool because one team of 2 people get one base (one nexus, cc, or hatch) at the start, but can start with 2 different races' peons so you can use the 2 races to benefit each other...like recalling tanks that are already in siege mode

If you have somebody you play with.

If you do not work well with the person you are playing with, and haven't worked out what job falls under what category, or you or your partner messes with the units under other player's category, your play suffers.

If you have somebody you play with.I rarely get to play with anyone I know, and on those few times they are usually LAN parties. (wouldn't it be nice if that was the only thing in life...) I used to be able to play my friends a lot, until my baby brother broke my computer's HD and fried it's MotherBoard. When I get my new comp I'll play this wonderful game type a lot... So much fun...

please note that Team Melee/FFA adds the population limit of EACH player to the team population limit. try 4v4 team with all toss/terran/zerg and note the 800 supply it gives you. also, 800 supply of zerglings is not possible. SC cant spawn that many units.

:o How do I make a team melee map? Is there a bunch of trigger work that needs to be done?

No, it's just a game type. Everything is done for you, meaning the map doesn't have to have anything special.

Team Melee is a lot of fun when playing with the right people. I remember a memorable game where a few people were being asses, and challenged us to a Money Map Team Melee. I concentrated on macro, while my partner did micro. They didn't stand a chance.
