So yeah, I went and bought some CDs and books a few days ago.
Music:
The Decemberists - Picaresque. A fine album by an Oregan indie pop band. Their style is close to old school ballads (from like the days of yore!). A kickass albumn and band indeed.
Mogwai - Mr. Beast. A Scottish rock band. Pretty good.
Broken Social Scene - Broken Social Scene. Indie rock band (a "supergroup"). Haven't listened enough to give a fair rating.
Gorillaz - Demon Days. Nuff said. :)
Books:
Common Sense by Thomas Paine. A secksi 200+ year old book.
Wanted. A trade paperback of a comic book miniseries. Quite graphic, with lots of violence (quite explicit at that), profanity and sexual content, including some brief nudity. The book follows this guy as he finds out that not only was his dad one of the world's deadliest supervillains, but that the entire world has been secretly run by supervillains since 1986. All heroes have either been killed or reprogrammed (along with the rest of the population) to forget the existence of heroes, villains, etc.
Anyways, this guy, Wesley Gibbs, is let in on this after his dad, known as The Killer, is killed. He's chosen to take his dad's place. Problem: He's a pussy with no balls. He has a shitty job, a girlfriend who cheats on his constantly and a craptastic life. So, he's trained to be a total badass.
In general, a pretty good TPB. A warning on the graphic content though. Definatly not for kids.
The Punisher: Welcome back Frank. Another TPB. This one covers the early issues in Garth Ennis's revival of Punisher. A popular revival. Basically, Punisher is back to the basics, no Micro to help him, no kickass Battlevan or fancy tech. The book follows Punisher's attempts to bring down a powerful crime family. There's also a sideplot involving three wannabe vigilantes: The Elite, The Holy and Mr. Payback.
They're lameasses. The Elite is basically a facist who simply fights crime in his neighborhood, to keep it clean. He also apparently believes the lower classes should be sterilized and such. The Holy is just a lunatic Catholic priest with a habit of killing gang bangers and such in the confessional with an axe. Mr. Payback is in a nutshell, a commie. He targets on corporations and such. Punisher takes all three out, because in their crusades, they killed four innocent people.
The book is also notable because the Punisher movie had a scene based partly on the comic. Remember that scene in the movie with The Russian attacking Punisher? Yep, that was in the comic first.
A pretty good book. Frank even punches a polar bear in the face in the book! :D
